Shahrukh Khan learns German

Shahrukh Khan’s movie My Name Is Khan opened at Berlin Film Festival on Friday and to everybody’s utter astonishment all the tickets, which were auctioned for price Euro 1000 (Rs 60,000 approx) on eBay, were sold out in five seconds.

Such was the response for the SRK starrer film in Germany. So, the King Khan who is, as usual, good in pleasing his fans with wit, humour and sometimes intellect tried to learn some German during his stay in Berlin. Though he admits that he is not good in learning new languages.

SRK tweets, “‘Ich liebe oish’ is the second thing I learnt in Germany. They said ‘oish’ means all... as in ‘I love you all’. Not good with languages. Just about make it in Hindi and English. But I know so many people who pick up languages so fast. It astounds me.”

At the press conference in Berlin, he said about his German fans: “I don’t call them fans because that would be one-sided and I love them as much, they are family.”

Hail, Shahrukh Khan!

My Name is Khan sets UK box office record

My Name is Khan has become Bollywood's most successful box office opener in the UK.

The movie was released in a storm of controversy after a row between its star - Shah Rukh Khan - and Shiv Sena, a hardline Hindu party in India.

But it has already grossed more than £936,000 since hitting screens and entered the UK Box Office charts at number six.

The film also took $2.3m (£1.2m) in the US over the four-day holiday weekend.

Khan had angered Shiv Sena by saying Pakistani players should be included in the Indian Premier League Twenty20 cricket competition, which starts next month.

UK TOP 10
1. Valentine's Day
2. Avatar
3. The Wolfman
4. The Princess And The Frog
5. Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief
6. My Name Is Khan
7. Invictus
8. A Single Man
9. Alvin And The Chipmunks: The Squeakquel
10. Astro Boy

Shiv Sena, an organisation which regards itself as a defender of what it sees as traditional Hindu moral values, tried to disrupt the film's release and consequently it opened amid tight security in Mumbai.

Khan's wife, Gauri, who co-produced the movie, said: "People have liked the movie which we're really happy to see and it's not because of the controversy."

My Name is Khan is a rare Indian film to get the backing of Hollywood distributors, 20th Century Fox.

In the film, Khan plays a Muslim with Asperger's syndrome whose life changes after the 11 September attacks in the US.

He stars opposite Kajol, who plays a single Hindu mother who falls in love with Khan.

The film was the fourth highest new entry in the UK behind Valentine's Day, The Wolfman and Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief.

Valentine's Day went straight in at number one as it grossed £3.7m and, although it averaged £8,640 across 432 sites, My Name is Khan averaged £10,291 across 91 sites.

The previous record for a Bollywood film in its opening period in the UK was held by Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna which grossed nearly £750,000, and also starred Shah Rukh.

CINEMATICAL REVIEW: My Name is Khan

Want to see a real romance that makes you laugh and cry and root for the heroes and is beautifully shot and full of all the things that Hollywood feel-good films lack? My Name is Khan has got your number.

Rizvan Khan, played by the handsome Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan, is a good-hearted Muslim man from India who has Asperger's syndrome, a developmental disorder on the autistic spectrum. Early on, during the Hindu-Muslim riots, his mom teaches him there's no difference between people - only good people who do good things and bad people who do bad things. This is probably a specific lesson that would go over some Westerners' heads (like, say, my own) and later comes into play after he moves to America and falls in love with a bubbly and beautiful Hindu hairdresser named Mandira (Kajol).

Their courtship is awkward, lovely, and funny, as she tests him to show her something in San Francisco that she's never seen before. If he wins, she'll marry him; when he finally does, she asks him to marry her. Love conquers all, for them; neither she nor her son, Sameer, even question Khan's Asperger's symptoms, and, in fact, one of the few missteps in the movie are when it's is played for laughs. Otherwise, Shah Rukh Khan's portrayal of Asperger's - from his avoidance of eye contact, reluctance to touch or be touched, repetition of phrases, and fear of crowds and loud noises - seems fairly accurate to this untrained eye. His Khan is an understated Rain Man, mostly minus the savant.
Even when his brother cuts him off for marrying a Hindu woman, his sister-in-law (an elegant psychology professor who wears a hijab and is the first to explain Asperger's to Khan) comes to make peace at the wedding with a beautiful cake. Things are fairly rosy for the new family.

But this is before 9/11 and before a Muslim last name, a Muslim husband, or a Muslim step-dad means too much to world at large. After 9/11, of course, this all changes, but what's perhaps most interesting is the insight My Name is Khan offers into the tension between people of South Asian descent of different religions. In fact, the BBC reported Friday, "more than 1,800 people have been arrested in Mumbai for vandalizing cinemas advertising Shahrukh Khan's latest movie, My Name Is Khan. This weekend, 21,000 special police will protect cinemagoers, and there will be security checks at the box office. 'This is not Shahrukh [sic], but the Khan in him that's saying all this,' said a spokesman for the Shiv Sena, the militant Hindu nationalist organization in Maharashtra which is behind the trouble. The Sena told Khan – an Indian Muslim - to move to Pakistan, and issued a threat: 'There will be dire consequences if Shahrukh [sic] defies the orders of the Sena chief.'"

9/11 tears Mandira and Khan apart. The name of the movie is taken from his repeated phrase, "My name is Khan and I am not a terrorist." Mandira, in a gesture of sheer frustration, tells him to go tell the president. So Khan puts on his sneakers and goes to do just that.

The movie wanders more towards Forrest Gump territory in this second half as Khan's attempts to meet the President are thwarted at every turn. However, while Khan does serve up increasingly out-there plot twists, the political subtext and Khan's own insight helps the movie avoid the treacly, manipulative sentimentality of Gump. It must be noted, though, that there are parallels, such as Khan's resourceful and wise mother, the wide shots of Khan traveling down empty roads in the middle of the US, and Khan's bonding with an African-American family in the deep South. The movie makes a huge misstep when "Mama Jenny" and, as Khan calls him, "Funny hair Joel" are painted with such broad, empty strokes, as are the other African-American people in their small town.

Khan builds to such a crescendo that by the time I left the theater 2 hours and 35 minutes later, not counting the intermission, I was exhausted by the whirlwind of events and emotions. I left drained, slightly tear-stained, but happy. Seeing it at a theater that specializes in Asian and Indian cinema, filled with families and couples whose elasticities and religions were as varied as those onscreen, added to the pleasure of watching such a hopeful, lovely movie. It was a pleasure and a departure from my typical movie-going experience.

Incidentally, My Name is Khan opened this weekend to the tune of $1.86M as of this writing on just 120 screens in the US. I hope more people take the time to watch this movie that left me feeling good long after I left the theater.

My Name Is Khan: Change is here?

It is official now that My Name Is Khan is a success, and it is still going strong. It has received a lot of applause & accolade from the fans and also from the critics. After 3 Idiots, we have got a movie which passes the ‘new theme’ exam. So, can we say that it may bring the change in the industry? Well, I have seen a glimpse. Just read on:

* People are getting bored with the candy floss movies made by Karan Johar. Though with these pop corn romance, he has attained his present place in the industry, but still, we wanted something different from him, ‘cause the trend is going that way. Though this movie passes this test, but did you notice that the story and screenplay of MNIK was not by K Jo. It was by Shibani Bathija, and that is why this movie has a different feel (read non K Jo feel!). It is said that when he read the story, he thought that if he writes the screenplay, then it may turn out like his previous movies. So he gave it to her. And the result is before us. This is certainly a welcome change.

* I use to hear and read that there was a time when Big B or Dilip Kumar use to appear on screen, fans used to go mad, and they use to throw coins on the screen. This time I chose to watch MNIK in a very small theatre, and you won’t believe, I saw the same craze still alive among the SRK fans. People were cheering SRK, and when he came on screen, some of them did throw coins on the screen. What I mean to say from this experience is that the movie watching in a theatre is back in fashion again. There are torrents, but nothing could be comparable with a theatre experience. All thanks to SRK-K Jo-Kajol, and also to the fans. It’s not the first time people have come out in such a big number to watch a movie. 3 Idiots and Avatar are good examples of this, but I saw the last 2 movies in a multiplex, where I didn’t see that type of madness and fanfare.

* One more thing I liked about this movie is its philosophy and also use of some scientific facts. It was a forte of the foreign movies to use science and philosophy in their movies. Starting from Pi, to the recent A single man, they are quite good at it. But now, since K Jo has started it, so we can expect some movies based on some good philosophy.

* Did you notice that Khan in MNIK didn’t meet George Bush, rather he met Obama. People think that Bush has a negative image in front of Obama. Obama symbolizes a positive change, and this angle was a welcome touch in the movie.
