The King vs The Boss
South superstar Rajnikanth and Bollywood Badshah Shah Rukh Khan are both remaking the Malayalam superhit Katha Parayumbol.
Rajnikanth is in Hyderabad’s Ramoji Filmcity with leading ladies Nayantara and Meena, protagonist Pashupati and director P Vasu, shooting non-stop for the Tamil version Kuselan which is scheduled for release on August 15; while Shah Rukh is working overtime on the Hindi version Billoo Barber, starring Irrfan Khan and Lara Dutta and which is slated for release also in August, at Mumbai’s Film City. A trade source in Chennai said, “If Shah Rukh’s film releases on the same day as Rajnikanth’s, then the Hindi dubbed version of Kuselan will be affected.”
After Rajnikanth’s Sivaji — The Boss became a superhit in Maharashtra, Bollywood distributors sat up and took notice of the actor’s popularity outside Tamil Nadu for the first time.
On the face of it, Rajnikanth and Shah Rukh have never had an issue. The only discord between the two happened when Rajnikanth was named Entertainer of The Year by a television channel. Shah Rukh, who was present at the awards function of the channel, asked Rajni how he managed the title. Rajni, of course, took Shah Rukh’s jibe in good humour. But in his acceptance speech, the South biggie who is a big Amitabh Bachchan fan, hit back saying, “There will be many Badshahs but there is only one Shahenshah.” Now there is said to be a dignified coldness between Rajnikanth and Shah Rukh.
Theatre owner and leading Tamil distributor in Maharashtra, Nambi Rajan said, “Rajnikanth is a legend. There is so much excitement for Kuselan though its release is nearly three months away.” Rajan also feels that it is unfair to compare Billoo Barber with Kuselan because both films will cater to a different audience. P Vasu, Kuselan’s director, has made many changes in the screenplay and his film will not be a direct lift of the Malayalam movie. On the other hand, Priyadarshan’s Billoo Barber will bear a close resemblance to the Malayalam original.

No Holiday for Shahrukh This Year
No summer vacation for Shah Rukh Khan this year. He is up to his eyebrows with work and Gauri and kids will have to wait. His schedule is choc-a-bloc with his TV show Paanchvi Pass, films like Billoo Barber, IPL, etc.
Normally SRK makes it a point to take a month-and-a-half off during his kids' summer break and head to London where he spends quality time with Aryan and Suhana. When SRK is on holiday, there's no extraneous factor that can disturb him. He says, "At that time it's just my family and me. I don't take anyone's calls… I am not in touch with anyone at that time. It's only about my kids and me. But right now there is too much going on for me to take my break."
A source close to the superstar says that SRK won't be taking his annual 40-day break "There is so much going on. We have finished the bulk of Billoo Barber and now he is working on Paanchvi Pass. Then in a fortnight, Adi's film Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi will begin. Also three days of shooting for Billoo Barber are left for which he will be going down South. After that he comes back to Paanchvi Pass. That wraps up by the end of May."
"Most of the filming for Rab ne Bana Di Jodi will happen in Mumbai and a few in the North, with IPL going on side-by-side. And therefore he is taking the kids with him for the different matches." What better way to spend quality time with kids!
Khan is known to be very close to his kids and allows them on his sets too, and it won't be any different during the summer break. Last year Khan spent a month in London where he took his kids to see his wax statue at Madame Tussauds. A friend who accompanied them last year says, "The two kids were so proud to see their daddy there. I think he actually enjoyed his statue once he saw that look in their eyes."
When Khan was invited to Warwick Castle to open its latest attraction, he lugged his family there too. So, from landing on the castle grounds in a helicopter to a sword slashing red carpet ribbon-cutting ceremony, flanked by fully armoured medieval bodyguard, the kids were in for a real treat. But that was just the start of the fun for SRK. After the inauguration Khan went for a private visit of the Castle with his family.
