After capturing hearts of Berlin fans at the 60th Berlinale International Film Festival with their film, My Name is Khan on Friday, Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol returned to Mumbai on Sunday.

No sooner had the two actors cleared customs at the Mumbai international airport that they were mobbed by the media.

Meanwhile, the film is setting new records at the US box office.

My Name Is Khan has grossed Rs 902 million (Rs 90.2 crore) worldwide in its opening weekend

Even the fact that it was a non-holiday 3-day weekend vis a vis both the previous high grossing films, which had 4-day Christmas weekends, did not prove to be a deterrent for Shah Rukh Khan. The movie has smashed existing global opening records in every country in which it was released this weekend.

My Name is Khan has scorched screens worldwide and raked in Rs 902 million (Rs 90.2 crore) ($ 19 million) worldwide in three days making it the biggest ever three-day collection worldwide ever.

"The most exciting part is that the worldwide collections jumped every day from Friday to Saturday to Sunday. This shows that the audience is absolutely loving Rizvan and Mandira," says Vijay Singh, CEO Fox Star Studios.

Sunday GBO in markets like US, Australia, UK & Middle East set new records for the Biggest single day internationally for a Bollywood movie.

Just to give a sense of scale, the overall weekend collections of MNIK have been double of closest competitor 3 Idiots worldwide.

Sanford Panitch, president of FIP, was esctatic over the results, saying, "While initially driven by the power of this extraordinary cast and director, it is My Name Is Khan as a film that has captivated audiences everywhere we have opened. An incredible start to this powerful and moving film."

In India, despite the issues in Maharashtra, Gujarat, Indore and other centres on Friday & part of Saturday, the film has opened exceptionally well. In states where the film opened normally, including Delhi-UP, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Kerela, the collections have been the highest ever.

Shahrukh Khan starrer ‘My Name is Khan’ director Karan Johar thanks all

‘My Name is Khan’ that was unleashed on the audience last Friday on 12th February was reeling under controversy as it faced the wrath of the vandals Shiv Sena who are the modern day evils trying to divide India into regionalism. But, SRK fans roared like a wounded tiger and swallowed the threats of the hooligans to wipe off their dictatorial ship and flocked to cinemas risking their safety but not bowing down to the devils.

And even in a far-away country like Germany, SRK’s placards screamed aloud in his support and director Karan Johar was touched and moved.

‘It’s very heartwarming. A filmmaker’s biggest dream is that his film connects with his audience. I am thrilled, ecstatic and literally folding my hands and saying thank you (to all fans),” quips Karan Johar in sheer delight and gratitude.

‘I won’t say anything beyond the film. In the film, Rizwan Khan (the protagonist) says, ‘We shall overcome’ and I think we are successful,’ he adds.

Now, I think the message is clear and loud and Bal Thackeray and his gang of hoodlums must pay heed to this one, ‘His name is Khan and he’s not a non-Indian.’

While Mumbai braved the Shiv Sena to catch My Name is Khan in theatres on Friday, Berlin residents braved sub-zero temperatures to book their tickets.

Fans of Shah Rukh Khan also waited for the actor, who was accompanied by his co-star Kajol and the film's director, Karan Johar, at the 60th Berlinale International Film Festival.

Fans, young and old, held pictures of their favourite star and mobbed the actor at the red carpet.

Proof of the actor's popularity was evident when online tickets for My Name is Khan were sold out in five seconds before dawn and were reportedly auctioned on ebay at 1,000 euros (Rs 60,000) each.

Overcome by such an enthusiastic welcome, the actor praised the organisers of the Berlin International Film Festival and his fans alike.

The film is already scaling the US box office charts, and doing very well overseas.

My Name Is Khan for special kids

Actor Shah Rukh Khan skipped a screening of his film My Name Is Khan organised especially for a group of 40 to 50 special children, many of autistic, at a South Mumbai multiplex on Sunday evening in the wake of Saturday’s bomb blast in Pune. However, he sent his message for the children through his friend and director of the film Karan Johar. “If anybody tells you that you are different, tell them that’s why you can make a difference,” Johar told the kids, while reading out a text message from the actor howm he referred as “my brother Shah Rukh Khan”.

“I didn’t think it was right to celebrate my movie in the light of what happened yesterday,” his text message to the children read. “Maybe we can meet at some other fixed time.”

Various non-governmental organisations working for children with special needs accompanied the kids to the special screening at Inox theatre here. While Johar introduced the movie, he chose to steer clear of the recent controversy over the Shiv Sena’s agitation against the screening the film. Police security at various cinema halls across the city continued on Sunday as the movie ran to packed houses, though police presence was lower than that on Friday and Saturday.
