Om Shanti Om The Biggest Movie of 2007

Shahrukh Khan plays everything from a junior artiste to a super hero in this film which runs over three decades.

Playing eye candy & arm candy is supermodel Deepika Padukone.

There are 45 guest appearances and SRK loses his shirt – but there’s still stuff about Om Shanti Om you don’t know!

We let Farah throw in the details. “ I have made Deepika do a number with Sunil Dutt and Rajesh Khanna of the 70s, we've made her dance with special effects used so that’s something new plus we have the mother of all item songs with 31 stars in it, I think that’s a first time ever plus we have Shahrukh in one song where his body is looking like Brad Pitt in Fight Club so everyone's eyeballs are going to pop out because the first time he has done almost a bare bodies item number like that. The story other than that and the flow of the story should really hook the audiences. These are all the additional garnishes, the story itself is very dramatic and unusual."

SRK ban gaya Muscle Man

Okay girls take it easy. The drool’s ruining the BombayTimes newsprint! There are many others too, in line? Omigod! And, hey dudes, chill. Yes, it is Shah Rukh Khan — yes.

The six-pack is real. It’s not a rubber suit borrowed from Batman . And NO, this is not an article on ‘how to exercise in 10 easy steps’! Phew!’

Double phew. I knew this would be the effect of India’s biggest superstar daring to bare his bod for the cameras for the very first time.

Perfect physique, bulging biceps, bronzed, almost gladiatorial – windblown hair, et al.

And with the unveiling of the new, ‘flexy’ Khan, he keeps a promise to yet another Khan buddy, his ace director – Farah Khan. “He’d promised me that if he ever pumped up and took his shirt off for the cameras, the first time would be for me. Of course, ‘conditions applied’ and he had to be in shape, etc. But thanks to his trainer Prashant, he’s kept his word. Here’s presenting the latest Greek God of Indian cinema check him out. He’s a regular ‘model’,” gushes the lady who’s expecting triplets to add to her magnum opus ‘baby’ due at Diwali.

Shah Rukh was a lot more modest when we quizzed him about ‘ Raju ban gaya muscleman (albeit carefully; don’t want no panga with those muscles).

“Well, that’s one way of looking at it. The thing is, I’ve worked with such strong set parameters for myself that anything that is seen as a departure from ‘my normal’ makes news. Chak De for example. I played the role differently; I mean I was as good, or bad, as any other, but because of the ‘difference’, its being spoken about, differently, so positively.
And Mashallah, it’s doing so well.
In Farah’s movie, I play a movie star of today. And with all respect, today’s stars are so physically fit, that I had to work on myself harder.
Especially in the second half, I play this really cool guy. I take my shirt off as the first character too, but as the second hero, I went all out.”

Meaning, at the rate India was taking over the world, would he possibly do a ‘full frontal’ in a Hollywood film if offered? He blushed a deep beetroot.

“No! No! Never! I don’t do kissing scenes. I don’t do love-making scenes and I will not do a full frontal scene. I’m too shy for any of that. I just can’t. And because I can’t, I’ve set certain rules for myself. I can’t dance either, but that’s something I can work at.
And this is as ‘naked’ as I’ll get.
Frankly, it was just Farah for whom I did this. I’d promised her that the first time I bared onscreen it would be for her.
And even though all my directors — Yashji, Adi, Karan, Aziz, Abbas-Mustan, etc. — love me, Farah is my only lady director. And I’d rather take my clothes off for a girl.”

But with girls finding him sexy even with shirt on, why step on the testosterone now?

He grinned, “I decided to get ‘sexy’ for a boy ... my son. He kept telling me to go get a six-pack. He’d say that Salman, Hrithik, John were the ‘good physiques’. And even though I’ve always been fit, never fat, he wanted me to get abs, so I did. This one’s for him.”

Shah Rukh Khan will release 2,000 prints of Om Shanti Om

“Hi, I hope I am not disturbing you?” said a voice, at least a billion people the world over can recognise instantly. Shahrukh Khan called EconomicTimes (ET) last evening, certainly not to discuss the latest on the Sensex.

The Don would rather discuss Red Chillies Productions’ new movie Om Shanti Om (OSO), slated to release this Diwali. After inking the alleged highest deal for a Hindi movie at around Rs 75 crore (inclusive of worldwide rights, but excluding music and satellite rights), OSO is set for another record, the highest number of prints any Indian movie has ever released.

SRK will release 2,000 prints of the movie. “Yes, that is the attempt,” says SRK. That would make the 800-plus prints of Rajinikanth’s superhit Sivaji The Boss look commonplace. “A chunk of these (prints) will be digital installations. There is definitely a huge market out there. And post the success of Chak De, the interest level is even higher. Germany for one, even sent down a huge contingent of scribes while we were shooting and Poland, Australia, South Africa, Malaysia all non-traditional markets too have seen a demand for more prints,” says SRK.

SRK, as reported by ET in July, was said to have sold the entire rights of OSO excepting music to Eros International for Rs 75 crore while the music is said to have sold to T-Series for Rs 8-9 core. While refusing to confirm the deal size, SRK, however, clarifies that the satellite rights are not part of the deal with Eros.

Keeping with his commitment to Star TV and his long-term relationship with the channel, the satellite rights in all likelihood will to go to Star. But the competition among channels in buying rights of a big movie, especially an SRK-starrer, is intense.

While the usual practice is to buy the rights for a decade, SRK sold his Main Hoon Naa to Star for a five-year period. And OSO rights could be even shorter. “I believe in underselling my film. So less money for less time which means that in the case of OSO, it would be sold for a period of 3-5 years at the most, not longer,” says Mr Khan.

According to industry insiders, the prices for satellite rights for big films swing wildly between Rs 8 crore to Rs 20 crore, with the outer figure being quoted for an SRK movie. Insiders in the TV industry, however, say the outer figure is ridiculous.

Any movie, big or small gets its maximum TRP in its first airing and even with a movie like OSO, they estimate that with advertisers the maximum moolah any channel can rake in during this first airing is Rs 4-5 crore. So even over five years, it does not make sense to pay anything more than Rs 10 crore as the maximum for a movie, they point out.

Eros International, meanwhile, says its investment is safe. This in spite the fact that Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Saawariya is releasing on the same day, November 9. “For one, we are securing our content pipeline, secondly, the distribution business is very sophisticated and we feel that the market can take two films,” says Eros COO Jyoti Deshpande.

She, however, concedes that if both were Eros films, then she would not have had them clashing at the box office. Ms Deshpande’s confidence also comes from the international market power that SRK holds. “He has markets which no other star has, from Poland to Australia to Germany of course,” says Ms Deshpande who says the split for the release will be 70:30 domestic to international.

While refusing to give the exact money he has sold OSO for, Khan says it is an expensive film. In Khan’s lexicon, anything which is Rs 12 crore is cheap, anything between Rs 20-26 is medium and anything above Rs 27 is expensive.

Shah Rukh offers a guest appearance in 'Bhoothnath' for gratis

Not only has Shah Rukh Khan's sporting exploits in the recent super hit, Chak De! India conquered the box-office and critics, his sportsmanship has floored the B R Chopra family too!

As per reports, for his guest appearance in the Amitabh Bachchan starrer, Bhoothnath, Shah Rukh Khan is not charging even a single penny from the Chopras.

Not only that, the superstar was even ready to turn up for shooting in his own personal clothes, declining remunerative offers, even for his fancy attires.

When quipped about the same, the witty star replied in his own inimitable way, "I'm a guest, so where's the question of payment."

Dear Shah Rukh, perhaps that's why you have deservedly been nicknamed King Khan.

Joker will now no longer have SRK in the superhero avatar

Enough trouble is brewing on the home front to keep Farah Khan busy before the release of her film, Om Shanti Om.

First, her husband Shirish Kunder parted ways with her best friend Shah Rukh Khan because of irrevocable creative differences, and the ambitious film, Joker will now no longer have SRK in the superhero avatar.

Later, her brother Sajid Khan’s film, Heyy Babyy didn’t showcase trailers of Om Shanti Om at the special screenings organised for the high-profile industrywallahs across the city.

Farah is yet to break her silence over tabloid reports of Shirish and Shah Rukh’s showdown at Mannat, but she is making efforts to get her husband and SRK back on talking terms. With SRK opting out of the film, his production company Red Chillies Productions will no longer produce the big-budget film.

Clearly, Shirish may not be at an advantageous position; but he claims that he has a bunch of financiers ready to back his project.

A source close to Farah reveals, She is in a tight spot, as the two people closest to her are at loggerheads. Neither Shah Rukh nor Shirish are talking about it. Despite all differences, Shirish is still editing the film and there are no fights in the edit room yet.

In circles where it really matters, the buzz is that she is extremely upset with brother Sajid Khan now, over the trailers getting snipped off. Given the extreme closeness of the siblings, this leaves a bad taste in the mouth.

A source close to Farah informs, She feels that Sajid could have avoided that ugly episode. Shah Rukh wanted the trailers to be aired so that he could get instant feedback from actors, film-makers and producers. It wasn’t an unreasonable demand.

Besides, it was because of her that SRK agreed to do a cameo in Heyy Babyy.
Sajid feigning ignorance about the ugly episode to certain sections of the media only worsened the situation. Farah has been quiet as it’s her brother’s film. But she felt betrayed when Sajid told some media persons that everything is hunky dory and that Om Shanti Om trailers were aired at all trial shows, says another source.
