When Shah Rukh became Abhinav

Shah Rukh Khan became Abhi... just for wife Gauri.

We recently learnt that when Gauri was to introduce Shah Rukh to her parents, she wasn’t so sure how they would react if they found out that he belonged to another community. So she conveniently changed Shah Rukh’s name and introduced him as Abhinav to her parents! Looking back, Gauri describes this as “silly and childish.” And as for SRK, he was ironically shooting for My Name is Khan while Gauri narrated this sweet little anecdote.

Shah Rukh beats Aamir in Poland

Shah Rukh Khan once again stole the hearts of the Polish fans with his performance in Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi at the Second Bollywood Film Festival in Poland where Aamir Khan's Taare Zameen Par and Deepa Mehta's Water were also screened.

Shah Rukh, who is almost a household name in Poland, didn't leave much scope for others to replace him in the hearts of his fans at the weeklong festival entitled Experience the Taste of India.

"Shah Rukh is well-established in our psyche and we feel close to him with his performances. For us, it doesn't matter who are the other great stars in India these days - whether it is Amitabh (Bachchan) or his son Abhishek, Aamir Khan or Hrithik Roshan," said Anusia Sancewicz, a well-known media personality.

"Shah Rukh is really superb in most of his movies that have been shown in Poland in the past four years starting from Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham which took Poland by surprise. In a sense, this film opened the floodgates for Bollywood films," added Anusia.

All the tickets of Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi were sold much in advance though the film was screened on the last day. In Warsaw, two multiplexes screened the film to meet the heavy rush - despite that many had to face disappointment as they couldn't get a seat in any of the two halls.

"Aamir Khan's Taare Zameen Par is an excellent movie and it has been appreciated by educated people, but the craze for Shah Rukh remains unabated," observed Riki Rana, a successful businessman and son-in-law of legendary Bollwyood singer Talat Mahmood.

"The role of a commoner portrayed by Shah Rukh in Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi created more ripples in the minds of the Polish audience as Raj Kapoor had done with his roles in Aawara and Shri 420 in 1950s and 1960s in the erstwhile Soviet Union," added Riki Rana.

JJ Singh, president of the Polish Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said that to promote Aamir a separate festival of his films needs to be organised.

"To promote Aamir Khan we should organise an exclusive festival of his big films such as Ghajini, Rang De Basanti and Fanaa. The climax of Fanaa was filmed on the Tatra mountains of Poland, yet the film has not generated much curiosity in this country, which is surprising," said Singh who was also the main patron of the festival along with the Epelpol Entertainment.

Deepa Mehta's Water, Abhishek Bachchan and John Abraham starrer Dostana and Yash Raj Films' Tashan were also screened along with Outsourced and Hello.

"Since Poland produces very artistic movies with great directors like Andrzej Wajda, Krzysztof Zanussi and Roman Polanski, that is why Mehta's Water was highly appreciated by the artistic Polish fans," said Gabellia Krzyzowska, an eminent Indophile.

"There is scope for films of Shabana Azmi, Nasiruddin Shah and Om Puri," she added.

Shah Rukh’s pal hits out at tabloid journalism

Shah Rukh Khan’s biographer and close friend Mushtaq Sheikh, who has co-written films like “Om Shanti Om” and “Billu”, says he hates being used by those who have personal grievances against the superstar.

Furious at a media report that he and Shah Rukh had fallen apart, Mushtaq said the superstar was “very much family”.

“I hate it when my friends are attacked. I mean how can you demean names like Farah Khan, Priyadarshan and Shah Rukh Khan all in one article without an iota of truth and get away,” Mushtaq told IANS.

“This is tabloid journalism at its worst. I hate being used by somebody who has misused his pen to vent personal grievances against Shah Rukh.”

Mushtaq, whose friendship with the superstar dates back more than a decade, recently released a book on Shah Rukh titled “Still Reading Khan”.

“Malice? Desperation? You tell me what inspires muck-rakers and I will till you where this came from,” said Mushtaq when questioned if Shah Rukh and he had indeed fallen out.

Doesn’t he feel that in today’s desperate times when movies are not releasing and news is hard to find, this is just one way for a section of media to grab attention and increase viewership?

“See, movies are releasing, and there is enough news out there, but it does depend on what kind of media you are and what you think are ‘good stories’. Matter of fact, Shah Rukh is family and will continue to be one. People can imagine, say and write anything they want.”

Shahrukh Khan turns superstitious

Like many numerology conscious stars, Shahrukh Khan perhaps too is turning superstitious.

Reports have it that he is thinking of dropping Kolkata from his IPL Team name, ‘Kolkata Knight Riders’, as the team is using only ‘Knight Riders’ in its new logo.

The superstar is believed to be acting on the suggestion of the numerology expert Sanjay B Jumaani, who is a regular advisor to many Bollywood stars regarding astrology and numerology matters. He had suggested this last year also, when Shahrukh, along with Juhi Chawla and her husband Jai Mehta, bought Kolkata team and named it ‘Kolkata Knight Riders’.

Speculations can’t be ruled out as Knight Riders’ coach John Buchanan has just revealed the possibility of replacing Sourav Ganguly as captain by New Zealand player McCullum, who is very much in form nowadays. And Jumaani is also of the view that Sourav is not so lucky for SRK. Being born on 8/7/1972, Sourav’s numerology number is 8, which symbolizes Saturn, and the number 8 doesn’t go well with Shahrukh.

For Shahrukh who has turned 44 and is under the influence of number 8, as 4+4 sums up to ‘8’, this year isn’t so good. His shoulder surgery, poor run of Billu Barber and now IPL getting shifted to South Africa –may be all these reasons have caught up with Shahrukh.

Jumaani has even suggested that Knight Riders should change their black jersey colour, as the black hue is the colour of Saturn. Now what further changes SRK will do in his team will be known with time.

Sonam is a hardcore SRK fan!

So much so that she is ready to dump her priorities for choosing scripts to share screen space with Shah Rukh. The actress has revealed that she will sign up for a film without considering anything if she gets to act opposite King Khan.

Are you listening monsieur Shah Rukh?

The ‘Dilli-6’ girl who is quite picky when it comes to nodding a yes for the right script has her rules in the right place. She is just not interested in running around trees romancing the hero nor is she interested in shedding bucketful of tears and saying ‘nahi…..’ The Bollywood babes of today are quite sure about what they want, else with so many glamorous faces to pick from it is quite tough to make a mark in the industry.

Sonam who first surfaced as the lead lady in the Sanjay Leela Bhansali film ‘Saawariya’ earned a spot in the hearts of film buffs even though the film bombed at the box office. Her second film ‘Dilli-6’, with the junior Bachchan was quite a success. Sonam is presently working in her papa’s production, where she gets to portray a very different character from the ones that she has done so far.

There are also talks doing the rounds that she might soon be seen in a film opposite Imran Khan.

Will SRK put Dada back in driver's seat

In what could lead to a new development in the ongoing saga at the Kolkata Knight riders camp, deposed captain, Sourav Ganguly reached Mumbai today (March 28). Ganguly is in the city to shoot for an ad film with the Knight Riders co-owner Shah Rukh Khan.

It is believed that Ganguly will meet SRK and get some clarity on the issue of 4 captains raised by the Kinght Riders Cricket Manager John Buchanan.

Contrasting versions have emerged from the KKR camp after Sourav Ganguly first revealed to TIMES NOW that he was not consulted before appointing rotating captains. "I read in the press. I talked with John yesterday. John thinks it should be the way T20 should be played. I read in the press first", Sourav said.

"John is trying to work this out in the form of warm-up games and practice games. Let's not go too far into this. John is also not part of a team which had this situation. I was told that he tried once with the Australian team but it didn't go forward. We will all do what is best for the team", Ganguly added.

"He is the coach of the team, he has his plans, which he feels is good for his team. It is completely new...I have never been a part of a team were there are 3-4 captains," he said on the reported differences with Buchanan", Ganguly said in an exclusive interview to Times Now.

A day later John Buchanan added a new twist to the tale saying that Ganguly was indeed consulted before he revealed his plans to the press. "I had discussed about the plans with Sourav after the first IPL season got over. Shahrukh Khan has given me a freehand in cricketing matters", Buchanan said.

Though Ganguly had earlier said that Shah Rukh will have a final say in the matter, he has however denied that he will raise the issue when he meets SRK later today.

Shah Rukh Khan to walk the ramp for Manish Malhotra

Shah Rukh Khan will be the show stopper for Manish Malhotra at the Lakme Fashion Week, which is being held in Mumbai, currently. Khan confirmed to Businessofcinema.com, “Yes, I will be walking the ramp for Manish as he is going to be showcasing yet another collection inspired by the uniform and styling of Kolkata Knight Riders. He did a collection for the Wills Lifestyle Fashion Week in Delhi last week, but this one is different, but expanding on the original idea of using the KKR colours.”

Malhotra is over the moon with his latest catch. The designer has had the cream of Bollywood walk the ramp for his outfits, be it Kareena Kapoor, Kajol or Urmila Matondkar, but SRK being SRK, Manish is really excited. Revealing the inside story of his latest collection, the designer said, “SRK and I were shooting in Los Angeles for My Name is Khan and SRK came up with the idea of expanding the KKR collection into a line for women as that has always been my claim to fame. So using the theme of black and gold and the additional use of colours like grey and white, which is part of the new KKR uniform, we have styled the new clothing line.”

So if you are a Shah Rukh Khan fan and want to watch him strut on the ramp, make sure you have front row seats for this show which will be held in Mumbai on 30 March.

King Khan still on painkillers and shoots

Everybody knows that SRK had injured his shoulder and was taking rest and after taking rest for more then a month he is back to shoot for Karan Johar’s My Name is Khan and attending meetings for IPL.

We spoke to our source close to the film

“He has resumed the shooting of his best friend Karan Johar’s next venture, ‘My Name Is Khan’ opposite Kajol. Shahrukh Khan has undergone shoulder surgery and doctors have advised him rest for minimum for four months but against doctor’s advice, he has resumed shooting after a short gap. He has been warned by the doctors but yet he is urging to shoot”

But about the precautions SRK ensures that he will shoot only light scenes that will not put much stress on his shoulder. Since his shoulder is not properly healed, SRK takes painkillers before shooting and in between, does physical exercises for his shoulder, which are prescribed by his doctors.

About the healing of his shoulder his closed source told us,”his arm will take another four to five months to make well fully. He will stay away from any stunts for at least six months or may be more. Everything depends on how his shoulder heals.”

In spite of shoulder surgery, Shahrukh did not stay away from the limelight and made appearance in Filmfare events and even actively took part in the IPL meeting which happened last Sunday at office.

SRK, Ambanis discuss Varun

Yup, they are among the top 50 Indians in anybody’s power list and also owners of cricket teams for the forthcoming IPL that’s shifted bat, ball and pitch to South Africa.

But on Tuesday night at Nana Chudasama’s dinner at home, Mukesh Ambani and Shah Rukh Khan were not discussing the Twenty20 tournament only. There was politics, also — how could there not be, with the elections here and the IPL kicked out because of them — with young Varun Gandhi being a subject of hot debate!

And joining these two powerful men in conversation were Shaina NC, Gautam and Nawaz Singhania, Patang Rao Kadam, Shobhaa and Dilip De, and Rashmi Thackeray among several others. Glasses clinked and cigars were puffed. SRK recalled his intrigue over Nana’s Marine Drive banners when he first came to Mumbai. “He called to say he loved them,” said the former Sheriff of Mumbai. And Nana also recalled the young Ambani who came to visit him with Papa Dhirubhai. “It’s wonderful to see these guys leading India in their unique ways,” said Nana. And nobody knew whether he meant business, cricket, power, or what!

Buchanan is not Chappell: Shah Rukh Khan

Kolkata Knight Riders owner Shah Rukh Khan came out in the defence of his team's coach John Buchanan on Thursday, revealing that Sourav Ganguly won't be treated in the way Greg Chappell did that led to Ganguly's axing from the Indian team.

"John Buchanan is not Greg Chappell," Shah Rukh Khan told the Telegraph.

The Bollywood superstar has also urged fans not to overreact after it was announced that Sourav Ganguly will not be the permanent captain in the second season of the Indian Premier League, to be played in South Africa from April 18. There was a huge uproar in Kolkata when coach John Buchanan told a press conference: "There won't be a permanent captain."

Shah Rukh Khan said that there were no plans to sideline Ganguly and he was still integral part of the Kolkata team.

"Sourav is our main man. No idea or decision will be taken without Dada's consent and agreement. And the whole KKR respects and loves him no end. So, there is no reason to overreact by any of us right now," stated Shah Rukh Khan.

John Buchanan's theory of multiple captains which has hit the headlines in the last 24 hours is a new theory which Shah Rukh Khan seems to be keen about.

"Last year also, we had contemplated having matches with multiple captains and inputs from them. Twenty20 is a new format and new ideas should be tried," added Shah Rukh Khan.

Shahrukh Khan changing his IPL team name to get luck in favor

It is being suspected that Shahrukh Khan has been discarding his IPL team captain because he was suggested by his numerologist that number 8 is not favorable for him and he should remove the name Kolkatta from his IPL team logo. Saurav Ganguly is a number 8 person and hence he had to be replaced by somebody who is luckier for Khan.

Many numerologists have been predicting that the number 8 is not only unlucky for Shahrukh but the number has been harming him and it was said that when Shahrukh entered his 44th year of life that summed to 8, he had to suffer the shoulder injury and he was kept out of action for the health issue. His film “Billu” did not perform well on box office and the use of Black color in team jersey was also opposed by astrologists.

The movie “Asoka” was also a number 8 film and all the creativity and presence of glamour couldn’t save the movie from performing badly on the box office. Numerologists have been suggesting remedies to make the team Kolkatta Knight Riders come at an auspicious number that suits Shahrukh Khan. Most of the successful captains of Indian team are born in July first week, like Sunil Gavaskar and Dhoni and Saurav Ganguly is also born in the same week as the two other captains and that should make him ideal captain to a cricket team!

Shahrukh Khan was born on 2 Nov 1965 and many people on the earth might have born on the same date, then why all are not popular like Shahrukh Khan or why everybody born on same date are not facing similar life situations. Although there have been many numerologist predictions in the past but the credibility of the predictions is not clear as numerology takes the birth date of a person and many people on this earth are born on same day.

Shahrukh: Not without my stole

It seems like Shahrukh Khan has become addicted to ‘stole’. Off late we have noticed him coming with a stole wrapped around his neck in most of the events. Although the superstar does not make a mistake of repeating any of his ‘stole’ more than once in any event, but we personally do feel that Shahrukh is simply addicted to it.

On 27th January, 2009, at the press conference of ‘Ghar Ki Baat Hai’, his television debut as a producer, we saw Shahrukh in a red stole. Again we saw him wearing a maroonish stole on the sets of Nach Baliye grand Finale on 1st February, 2009. Finally on 22nd March, 2009 we saw Shahrukh sporting a blue-black stole at the IPL press conference.

What is happening with our superstar here? Seems like he has become very obsessed with ‘stole’ off late. We must say that it (stole) suits him well but now it has become like a habit and if we have to attend any of Shahrukh's event, we are almost sure to see his neck wrapped with a ‘stole’.

We really don’t know what the matter is, but as everyone knows that Shahrukh is very much in love with his love lady and wife, Gauri and obeys to most of her sayings, we just hope Gauri is not behind all this. Last but not the least, Shahrukh really carries himself as well as his ‘stole’, but we want to see a change now.

Shahrukh, we hope you are listening!

When asked if she was really the rock, the pillar behind Shahrukh she said, “actually that’s not true because I was not too happy about him coming to Bombay and I didn’t even know when he became a star it was very shocking for me firstly to be here and films and everything. It was very very difficult. And I actually did not want his films to do well. I thought if it flopped I should go back to Delhi. Because you know when you are so young and I got married when I was 21 everything was so new that for me it was like everything should flop.”

Gauri further on Shahrukh added that, “he was always ambitious from his very childhood in his school in his college he has always been on top. Whether it was as a student; football, hockey, his theatre anything, for me whatever he would touch would be gold. I think I was smart to marry him. I think that’s my smartness that I chose the right guy. ”

You and Shahrukh met quiet early almost in the teens to which she said, “Yes he was the first person I met and went out with and he has been the only man.”

When suggested that in India Shahrukh has done almost everything and it would be wonderful if he goes to Hollywood she said, “If today he says I don’t want to act and be just a director or producer I’ll be fine with whatever he’s happy with. I’d rather have him home with the kids spend more time at home that would be better for me I think.”

When asked if it was true that Gauri and Shahrukh had to fight to be together. She confirmed and said, “Yes my parents were obviously not for it because we were so young and then to take a decision to get married to a person who was going to join films and being from a different religion. We even changed his name to “Abhinav’ so that they feel he was a Hindu boy and that was really silly and childish.”

When asked about her decision to leave everything from Delhi and follow the man of her dream she said, “It’s been an amazing journey I would. When I came to Bombay it was very difficult I enjoyed every bit of it but it was so new and life was very different new people and new home. But we went back very often to Delhi in the beginning.”

When asked where she put up in the early days in Bombay she said, “Mr. Aziz Mirza – we stayed at his place for 6 months it was very sweet of him and then we rented an apartment and there was nothing. My mom came from Delhi and there was no bed there was no sofa no chair just a kitchen. She was shocked to see me like that she said “why don’t you have a bed? Where is the chair?’ so I said this is the “Gadda’ (mattress) sleep on this.”

When asked if she remembers the date Shahrukh bought her the first diamond she said “I bought it myself! I grabbed it actually I’m quite a grabber. He doesn’t have to gift me anything.’

What’s the one thing you love doing together, “Watching desperate house wives. He loves to watch that with me.”

When asked if they miss the earlier days, the simple times, Shahrukh said, “No I don’t miss them people ask me this question very often but I don’t miss going and having “chaat’ in “Gol Market’, I’ve never wanted to eat pav bhaji on Chaupatty either I’m very happy being a star I love what comes with it I also appreciate the hard work I have to do for it and I don’t want to wear dark glasses to hide from the world that I’m a superstar and I really enjoy it.”

Shah Rukh will play Don in Don 2: Farhan

The first season of Oye its Friday may have come to an end, but it looks like Farhan Akhtar still has a lot to talk about, which includes a very exciting news for Shah Rukh Khan fans.

"Yes, Shah Rukh Khan is going to be playing Don in Don 2. Most of the main characters will be tha same as the first movie, but we will also have a lot of new surprises in it," Farhan said.

While shooting for Don 2 is at least a year away, Farhan's got his hands full with the psychological thriller Kartik Calling Kartik co-starring Deepika Padukone.

"Right now, im only thinking about Kartik Calling Kartik. I am glad to have got Deepika in the movie. She is a very sweet girl and the film is a psychological thriller," he said.

With projects with SRK and Deepika in hand, Farhan certainly seems to have a soft corner for the cast of Om Shanti Om.

Shahrukh, Preity to add glamour to Congress campaign

In an election bereft of substantive issues rousing the voters or polarising the parties, Bollywood stars are expected to draw crowds and generate some excitement.

Every star has a following and can bring in the crowds. That is possibly the reason that the Congress party has decided to rope in the services of popular Hindi and South film stars to deliver political dialogues by reading campaign “script” for it in the forthcoming elections.

Bollywood actors Shah Rukh Khan and Preity Zinta will canvass for the Congress party in the run-up to the Lok Sabha polls.

Asked if Khan and Preity will be able to campaign following the busy IPL schedule, Union Minister of State for Home and Congress’ third-time candidate Prakash Jaiswal said they will spare time for the purpose.

Bhojpuri actress Nagma, who had plans to test the political waters and sought a ticket from Congress, will now campaign for the party as she did in the last general elections. From being linked with Saurav Ganguly, Ravi Kishan to Dawood Ibrahim, Nagma’s personal life has brought her more fame than her professional life. Obviously, she is expected to draw more crowds than the Congress candidates she is going to campaign for.

According to the magazine Chitramala, another south hottie Trisha is also going to campaign for Congress. The Congress party is serious on adding more glamour for the party and its campaign and has hired Trisha by paying around Rs 2 crore for a 20 day call sheet. She has signed on the agreement and will be readying to campaign.

South actor Nagarjuna too has said he’ll appeal to all his fans to support Congress.

Faced with a tough election ahead, the Congress is also banking on the popularity of the oscar winning Slumdog Millionaire song “Jai Ho..” The Congress has bought the rights of the award-winning song from T-series and is set to use it appropriately once its election campaign gets underway.

Earlier, in last year’s Gujarat Assembly elections, the runaway success of the Shahrukh Khan starrer “Chak De” had inspired the Congress to borrow the film title for its campaign in the state. ”Chak De Congress” posters were splashed liberally across the state during the election.

It’s a different matter that the popularity of the film failed to fetch any dividends for the Congress, which was routed by the BJP.

SRK is an elder brother: Karan

It’s a reaffirmation of their dostana, this film that Shah Rukh Khan and Karan Johar are co-producing called My Name Is Khan.

The ‘Khan’ in the title is incidental; SRK’s character in the film is Rizwan Khan, who is autistic with limited social interaction abilities. Apparently, the film has generated interest among Indian and overseas distributors already. Karan is aware that he’s on thin ice, directing a film that has characters and situations he’s unfamiliar with. “I am the wrong man to direct this film,” he admits. But at the heart of My Name Is Khan is a tender love story and at directing that, Karan is king. “How can I not have romance in my films?” he asks. “Every filmmaker has to evolve some time. I wanted to make a film in the realm outside my comfort zone. And Shibani Bhatija came up with this mind-blowing script that challenged my abilities,” he says.

His lead actor has a witty reply when asked about being the film’s co-producer too. “Karan doesn’t want to pay me what others do, which is very little, so he said, ‘I can’t underpay you like this, so you be my partner.’ That’s how we’re producing this film,” laughs SRK. Karan admits, “It’s true, I can never put down his price on paper. But considering we were both passionate about the subject, we said why not co-produce the film? We’ve known each other so long (their dostana is 16-years-old) that this new initiative is just an extension of our emotions. Besides, I can never make a film without Shah Rukh. He is a big part of me and my family. He’s like the older brother I never had. I love SRK as a unit — that includes his wife, children, sister and his in-laws.” So, a huge set has been put up at Mehboob Studios and shooting is on with Kajol. Shah Rukh, who is still recuperating from his shoulder surgery, will join the unit by the end of this month.

Whether it is infidelity or homosexuality, Karan hasn’t hesitated to push the envelope and break barriers in the kind of films he is making. His last film, Dostana, directed by Tarun Mansukhani, was among the biggest hits of 2008 and crossed Rs 100 crore. Both SRK and he are determined to push their production houses to the top slot in Bollywood. While SRK is producing Ra-1 and Happy New Year this year, Karan has Wake Up Sid directed by Ayaan Mukherjee, another untitled film by Renzil D’Souza and an animation film Koochie Koochie Hota Hai. “I’m giving new directors a chance and am open to good scripts,” says Karan, “Being in mainstream cinema gives production houses like ours the edge to reach a wider audience. It’s time to move forward.” How was the emotional reconnect with Kajol after eight years? “Shah Rukh and Kajol are indispensable. She’s one of the most talented actresses of Hindi cinema. Every time we wrap up a film, both of us cry, while Shah Rukh looks at us in amusement and asks, ‘What’s wrong?’” says Karan in exasperation.

SRK, Mushtaq fall out

Close friends for years, Shah Rukh Khan and Mushtaq Sheikh have drifted apart

Best friends, Shah Rukh Khan and Mushtaq Sheikh have fallen out. The news comes as a shock since Mushtaq always maintained that ‘it is a blessing to have someone like Shah Rukh around you’. It may be recalled that Shah Rukh allowed Mushtaq to write two books on his life — Still Reading Khan (for which SRK shared some of his personal family photographs) and Shah Rukh Can. Mushtaq was even given the credit of being a co-writer with Farah Khan on Om Shanti Om — but reliable sources insist that the work was entirely Farah’s.

Mushtaq was also seen in Luck By Chance for a split second just before Shah Rukh Khan begins a chat with Farhan Akhtar.
Our source from Bollywood revealed, “There have been differences between Mushtaq and SRK for quite some time. The friction intensified when SRK’s Billu, which Mushtaq wrote, did very average business at the box-office."

What was the flashpoint? Our source explained, “Mushtaq was assigned to be one of the script writers on Ra.1, but after Billu proved to be a disappointment, SRK didn’t want Mushtaq to work on the film.”

Despite repeated attempts to get their side of the story, Shah Rukh and Mushtaq remained unavailable for comment. Though Bobby Chawla (CEO, Red Chillies) maintained, “There is no problem between SRK and Mushtaq,”; a source close to Red Chillies Entertainment confirmed and said, “Things are not the same between them.”

Shahrukh resumes My Name Is Khan

Shahrukh Khan who underwent a surgery for a tear on his left shoulder muscle at the Breach Candy hospital in Mumbai last month (February 16) resumed shooting for Karan Johar's My Name Is Khan at Filmistan Studios from March 22 onwards. Though SRK has been seen at a few private parties, events and IPL related meetings, he was on a break from work.

SRK says, "We started shooting from Sunday onwards. It's supposedly simple work. I haven't recovered fully yet. It will take another four months but this shoot is unavoidable so I have to do it." When asked how he is coping with the shooting the actor says, "It's painful and I keep taking painkillers and exercise in the breaks. The work is being kept easy."

Shahrukh rules out the possibility of doing action scenes for the next few months. "As far as action scenes are concerned, I don't know... maybe six to seven months later. I still can't move my arm."

Shahrukh had injured himself on the sets of Dulha Mil Gaya in November last year and then headed to LA for the shooting of My Name Is Khan for 45 days at a stretch. He decided to undergo the operation after the release of his home production, Billu. He had surgery done at the Breach Candy Hospital on February 16.

Shahrukh gearing up for IPL

There is a calm before a storm. After keeping a low profile for sometime, Shahrukh Khan is all set to storm your television screens. Nothing can stop him from cheering for his IPL team Kolkata Knight Riders and not even the recent surgery on his shoulder.

The second edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) will be played outside India because of the upcoming general elections. Shahrukh knows the buzz will be missing in India but he is certainly not going to miss the fun. He said that he and his Bollywood friends would try to watch maximum number of matches. He added that he would request Lalit Modi, Chairman of the IPL, to reschedule the matches on weekends so that his children could watch it.

Well, Shahrukh Khan roped in Indian celebrities like Karan Johar, Arjun Rampal, Farah Khan, Aziz Mirza, juhi chawla, Vivek Oberoi, Sajid Khan, Riteish Deshmukh, Chunky Pandey and Arbaaz Khan to cheer for his team Kolkata Knight Riders last year. The story will be different this time around, as the venue for the IPL matches will be away from home. England and South Africa are the favourites to host this year's IPL.

Well, let's wait and watch if Shahrukh can pull the crowd outside India.

SRK - Hrithik form a united front

Shah Rukh Khan and Hrithik Roshan are ganging up against the Aamir Khan-Salman Khan-Akshay Kumar front

Life can be very difficult without a friend and when the ones you considered your good friends fall out with you or let you down, then it’s always wise to develop new relationships. The latest dosti doing the rounds of Bollywood is that of SRK and Hrithik. Setting aside their supposed feud over the Krazzy 4 song, the two have been hobnobbing at various parties and events. In fact , the Roshans are regular guests at all SRK dos, including the super exclusive ones at Mannat.

However, both stars are not giving out any sound bytes about their friendship.

Shah Rukh is a great owner, says Ajay Jadeja

Shah Rukh Khan can bid adieu to the rest that his doctor has advised him post the surgery. With the IPL moving out of India, the actor's traveling will increase.

The owner of the IPL franchisee, Kolkata Knight Riders, SRK is a key player for his side. Former Indian cricketer, Ajay Jadeja said, “Shah Rukh is a great owner. His presence boosts the team spirits. However his presence in the dressing room and the team dug out has been restricted since he is not a player, but if I were part of the team's think tank, I would keep him as part of the 15 member squad, because his presence could be the decider between a win or a loss. His energy levels can motivate anybody to give his best shot.”

Khan was supposed to start shooting for Karan Johar's My Name Is Khan from the middle of May and come July, a 40 day schedule in America. In the meantime, Farah Khan, who is scripting her Happy New Year would have finished with her writing. Farah tells Businessofcinema.com, “By October, I should be done with my script, Inshallah.”

If this is the schedule the actor is planning, SRK will not get an off day for quite a long time. But with the actor's boundless energy, this confined recuperation period must have been more tough to handle for him, than a day in office.

SRK is bringing Bollywood to his IPL matches

Shah Rukh Khan, who owns the Kolkata Knight Riders team of the Indian Premier League (IPL), is not losing sleep over the change in venue for the second edition of IPL, which will be played outside India. Far from being skeptical about the change in venue, Shah Rukh perceives it as a good sign and is also confident about all his friends, who were with him last year at different venues for the IPL, making it to the yet-to-be decided venue.

Talking about the change in venue, Shah Rukh said, "Of course, the buzz would be missing here but I guess the elections will take care of it."

When asked if his Bollywood friends would join him at the venue, he replied, "Yes, of course they will. Even I will try to be present at the maximum number of matches."

When we probed further whether his kids will also join him at all the matches, he said, "As far as my kids are concerned, I will request Lalit Modi (Chairman of the IPL and vice-president of the Indian cricket board) to reschedule the matches at the weekend, so that my kids can attend it."

But all said and done, the fact remains that the glamour quotient added by Shah Rukh Khan's friends may not be the same with most actors being busy with their respective shooting schedules.

Some of SRK's friends who were seen cheering SRK's team last year were Karan Johar, Arjun Rampal, Farah Khan, Aziz Mirza, Juhi Chawla, Vivek Oberoi, Sajid Khan, Ritesh Deshmukh, Chunky Pandey and Arbaaz Khan.

Aamir ends his war with Shahrukh

On his 44th birthday Aamir Khan decided to end the war with Shahrukh Khan. The perfectionist actor said that he loves and respects Shahrukh and wishes him successful life and career. He also wished that all his movies become hits. The two Khans have recently had a war of words against each other with both of them taking a dig at each other whenever that have been in front of the media.

Contradicting himself moments later Aamir said that he was not competing with anyone in the industry and was not interested in the number game too. He added that he is following excellence and not success now in his career and believes success will come with excellence. Surely Aamir takes a dig at Shahrukh even while making peace with him!

SRK owns an antique camera

Shahrukh Khan has been the luckiest person to own the camera of the great epic, Mughal-E-Azam, which starred yesteryears ace actors, versatile Dilip Kumar and stunning Madhubala. King Khan is the proud owner of this antique piece which is believed to have shot the blockbuster.

Shahrukh has given a genuine respect to the camera by placing it near the entrance of his colossal study at the second floor of his Mannat. He placed it in such a prominent place that no one bypasses it. IPL commissioner Lalit Modi's wife Mrinalini is said to have gifted Shahrukh this antique piece which stand tall during the last IPL. SRK spends most of his time in his study and placing the camera at the entrance of his study looks quite elegant.

A source says, "SRK is very fond of this camera and loves to show it off to his guests. It is more special to him as the actor is a big fan of Dilip Kumar and loves his movies. Having possessed the camera which shot Dilip sir makes him feel ecstatic."

Abhishek takes SRK’s advice seriously!

The very sight of Abhishek Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan together sends our shutterbugs in a tizzy, but despite whatever gossip mags may say, Abhishek insists he has immense respect for SRK.

On Oye! It’s Friday, AB Jr confessed that he always takes King Khan’s advice seriously, of which one he will always remember. SRK had once told him, “There are two types of actors in this world — one is a runner because he’s being chased and the other who runs because he loves running — be the runner who always loves running.

This ideology was something that Abhishek admits imbibing every day in his life.

Dad SRK rewards Aryan for awards!

Shah Rukh Khan is a very devoted father and is always there for his kids when they need him. So, at a school sports day event, when his son Aryan won four medals, SRK was mighty proud. Like father, like son! All those who have a thorough knowledge about SRK will remember that he himself was a very good athlete and the captain of the college soccer club.

Though Bollywood's global super star could not make it to the event, as he was in Los Angeles, shooting for Karan Johar's MY NAME IS KHAN, but when he came to know that his son Aryan (a student of Dhirubhai Ambani International School), had won four gold medals, Shah Rukh was very happy and immediately decided to reward Aryan for his brilliant performance. So, he gifted his son a Segway PT, which is a two wheeled self balancing transportation device, as a reward for winning the medals. Naturally, the athletic Aryan is overjoyed with the gift and has taken quite a fancy to it and can be seen learning to balance himself on his Segway.

For those who have not seen or used a Segway PT, it is a modern and technically superior version of the balancing vehicle which Hrithik and his kid-gang used in KOI...MIL GAYA and is very popular abroad.

Karan Johar to shoot My Name Is Khan at Mehboob Studios

Karan Johar’s My Name Is Khan is all set to be shot in India after its first schedule in the US. The set for the film’s next schedule is being constructed at Mehboob Studios in Mumbai.

The set is being designed by art director Sharmistha Roy.

However, the date when the shooting will commence at Mehboob is not yet decided. It may be recalled that the movie’s protagonist - Shah Rukh Khan - recently underwent a shoulder surgery and is at present recuperating. Dharma Productions has booked an entire floor of the studio till 17 April, 2009 to shoot the film.

My Name Is Khan is based on a true story directed by Johar and produced by Dharma Productions. The screenplay is written by Shibani Bathija and the movie stars Kajol opposite SRK. The music is composed by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, whereas cinematography is by Ravi K. Chandran.

SRK-Aamir: It’s war time again

It’s war-time again between Bollywood’s superstars Aamir Khan and Shah Rukh Khan. The usually reserved Aamir has yet again triggered the debate of who’s on top, him or SRK?

Aamir, who celebrates his 44th birthday this Saturday, said that because SRK’s recent films have flopped he has lost his sense of humour.

“Now that his films are not doing well, SRK has lost his sense of humour,” the actor was quoted saying.

The Ghajini actor, who was termed as this year’s most powerful Bollywood personality by Filmfare, said a person who is on top will never announce himself as number one. “I remember him (Shah Rukh) saying that he was joking about calling himself No. 1. I find it very funny as I have never seen anyone proclaiming themselves as No. 1. Not Sachin Tendulkar, not Lata Mangeshkar, not Vishwanathan Anand. I am saying all this in a lighter vein too. But Shah Rukh’s sense of humour suddenly disappears when it comes to me.”

Last year, the Aamir-SRK war came out in open when Aamir blogged about his dog being named ‘Shah Rukh’ and when King Khan declared himself to be the biggest brand other actors want to associate with.

With this new debate, it seems what began as a joke has taken a serious turn.

SRK's 'Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge' 700 Weeks

DDLJ crosses the 700-week mark, creates new record

Fourteen years after it was first released "Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge" continued its successful run at the box office crossing the 700-week mark. The Shah Rukh Khan-Kajol starrer, which had previously broken the record of "Sholay", to become the longest running film in 2007, has been playing continuously for 700 weeks at Mumbai's Maratha Mandir theatre, creating a record of its own.

The film, directed by Aditya Chopra, starred Shah Rukh and Kajol in a story that featured Indians living outside the country for the first time in a mainstream Bollywood film.

The film a romantic drama, included typical Bollywood elements, but owed its stupendous success to the fresh twist it brought to the boy-meets-girl story. Filmed in London and Punjab, the film is considered one of the best romantic films of Bollywood.

The music of the film composed by Jatin Lalit topped every charts and the movie won 10 Filmfare awards, including best actor and best actress for Shah Rukh and Kajol.

Shah Rukh doesn’t like a pat on the back, Gauri tells Deepika!

Now that he has got a shoulder surgery done, superstar Shah Rukh Khan doesn’t like it when someone pats on his back.

Recently, when actress Deepika Padukone tried to catch up with the actor to find out about his health post surgery, SRK’s wife reportedly messaged her saying that he doesn’t like to get a pat on his back now.

Deepika said, “I did get a message from Gauri saying he was in a lot of pain and wasn’t in the state to meet anyone. He doesn’t like a pat on the back. He’s a fighter and a go-getter and an operation is just another day in his life.”

SRK: "I am a fantastic person"

Ghajini’s bigger success at the box office than Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi left tongues wagging about how Aamir has finally overtaken the BO king Shah Rukh. What followed were Aamir’s innumerable statements that described SRK as a manipulative and pompous star who praises no one but himself.

However, in spite of nursing a shoulder injury, Shah Rukh turned up at the Filmfare awards recently only to say how stars should be ‘sportive’ about other’s wins as well. Without paying heed to Aamir’s allegations of labelling SRK a narcissist, Shah Rukh praised himself by saying, “I always feel that I will win the Best Actor award.” The award eventually went to Hrithik for Jodhaa Akbar and even then the Baadshah was seen enjoying the evening...

Taunting Aamir for not showing up at award functions, SRK said, “An actor has to be sportive about other’s wins as well. I love attending award functions as they honour those who’ve worked hard on their films.”

Shah Rukh’s patch up with the Bachchans is another signal of him showing Aamir and Salman that he still is the best when it comes to maintaining relationships within the industry.

“People call me a good PR but more than anything I am a fantastic person,” said SRK at the recent Amrita Arora wedding too!

So, if you think the lukewarm response of Rab Ne and Billu or even the shoulder injury has calmed down our confident SRK, the answer is no. He is in fact busy silencing Aamir!

No holi so says Bollywood, still in grief over 26/11

Put the colours on hold, says Bollywood. Still smarting from the terror attacks in Mumbai, two of the biggest stars — Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan — are skipping any Holi parties.

A source close to showman Subhash Ghai tells us, “in the wake of the terror attacks, there is no celebration whatsoever. Shah Rukh Khan and Farah Khan are also giving Holi celebrations a miss for that reason.”

Some Holi bashes are still on. Of these, the biggest is being organised by Javed Akhtar and Shabana Azmi. Asked about his take on putting Holi on hold, Akhtar replies, “We all are very sad and angry… but that does not mean we should give terrorists the itinerary to decide events.” Shilpa Shetty, a cricket team owner this year, is hosting a pre-Holi bash for her Rajasthan IPL team in Mumbai.

SRK goes back to acting school

Before he got into films, Shah Rukh Khan also did theatre. The actor was a part of theatre guru Barry John’s troupe. Uses references from play he did years back to play My Name Is Khan role.

Sources reveal that during his stint with John, SRK did a play on the subject of autism and even worked with an autistic child. For his next film, My Name is Khan, Shah Rukh has used references from his play to help him better his character.
A source close to the actor reveals, “Shah Rukh has done immense research on the subject of autism before starting the shoot.

He has gone online and has read up all he could and has even asked for study reports of patients who suffer from the condition. However, what helped him the most was his experience of working with an autistic kid while doing a play all those years ago.”

Shah Rukh’s character in Khan will display a certain condition where his eyes will appear dead. “Physically, this is one of the most difficult characters he has played. In the film, we see that his eyes are dead and that he also has to say his dialogues at the same time. Since he isn’t blind, but suffering from a certain condition, the challenge is bigger.”

Apparently, the actor rehearsed daily on how to get the eyes right and give the correct expression. “It was painful to see him bring such a character to life,” notes the source.

SRK to resume work soon

Restless and raring to go,” is how a friend visiting Shah Rukh Khan described the actor, who has been confined to his home for over a month owing to his intricate shoulder surgery.

But SRK, who has been utilising the said time to be with his children, read scripts and catch up on his other reading, is all set to resume shooting from March 19, with friend Karan Johar’s My Name Is Khan.

Though no one is talking about SRK’s return plans as yet, it’s reliably learnt that SRK will begin with dramatic scenes as he cannot do strenuous scenes or fight sequences for a while. Since Karan’s is the only film Shah Rukh has on the floors, he will be shooting at his own pace and rhythm, without the risk of having to do anything that could strain his shoulder. Later, during the year, Shah Rukh will be starting Farhan Akhtar’s Don 2 with Priyanka Chopra, who incidentally is one of SRK’s costars to have kept a constant tab on the star’s health progress.

While refusing to talk about Shah Rukh’s return to shooting, Karan says, “All I’ll say is SRK’s health is of utmost importance. Films will come and go. He needs to be well.”
Karan says My Name Is Khan is the most important Johar-Khan collaborative vehicle. SRK is a very active part of My Name Is Khan in terms of its making and marketing, apart from keeping tabs on the finances of the project.

Laughs Karan, “I tend to go a bit crazy with money. SRK is an active producer. It’s an important film for both me and SRK. Again, it’s an emotional bonding. This was a film I wanted to make with and for SRK. I want it to be an endeavour that should take both of us forward together.”

A BMW DATE WITH SRK

He is in a lot of pain but talk about Calcutta and the Kolkata Knight Riders and the famous dimpled smile is back on Shah Rukh Khan’s face. He kept Pratim D. Gupta of t2 waiting for a while on Thursday morning at his palatial Bandra bungalow Mannat but once he stepped out, the King made the wait worth every second and more. Sitting next to him in his silver BMW (555, if you please), t2 spent one hour with the man who has evolved from “Mike Tyson to Muhammad Ali”. He doesn’t mind getting beaten these days — the sling makes him look even more tough — but the raging bull says “You can’t take me down”. He talks about KKR being a team of the future but signs off with the line “we will win this time”. Let’s just say, you can keep Shah Rukh Khan out of Calcutta but you cannot keep Calcutta out of Shah Rukh Khan. He is wearing a white T-shirt and a brown leather jacket. Before starting the interview, he quickly scans the inbox of his Nokia Communicator. He ignores most of the messages and chooses to reply to a couple of them. The car has meandered out of the Mannat backgate, through the narrow lane next to his bungalow, out near the Bandra Bandstand and sets off for Andheri to the Yash Raj Studio. It will be Shah Rukh’s first shoot — for Knights & Angels — after his shoulder operation two weeks back. Here are excerpts from the Kingsized chat, from shoulder tendon to terrorism, KKR to My Name is Khan, Aamir to Amitabh. A t2 special, from SRK’s silver BMW

You promised to come to Calcutta in January. Was it the shoulder operation that got in the way?
Yes this (shows the sling)! If I am a little better I will come during the next camp (for KKR) which gets underway on March 16. I am not shooting so I can come. I can’t shoot. It pains all the time. It’s also a problem sleeping with this, yaar. A lot of things have happened to this shoulder.

How did you manage to hurt it in the first place?
I must have hurt it before, which I don’t remember. But it was not too major... just a little tear to the muscle. A muscle-muscle attachment is called a ligament and a muscle-bone attachment is called a tendon. So this ball and socket joint in the shoulder has three muscles. One to move the arm to the front, one to move it to the back and the third to move it to the side. The middle one, the one needed to move the arm to the side, has torn from the bone. I was shooting for this film called Dulha Mil Gaya... aaahhh... I did it for a few friends, Sushmita Sen was there. And there was just a couple of days of shooting. So I went and for the last couple of shots I had to jump over and my shoulder hit against the ground. I didn’t realise it then. In fact I shot My Name is Khan in the US with this shoulder, without realising. Then I was in a lot of pain. I couldn’t sleep. I went to the doctor... luckily I had the world’s two best shoulder specialists in the US. Both saw it and said the shoulder muscle was completely torn. A few strands were left and I had to get it operated immediately. If those strands came off, the shoulder would never heal. So I came back and got operated on. What they did was take the muscle and put it back on the back and nailed it, in layman’s term. Two nails have gone into the bone. So they pain. The muscle pains. The shoulder pains. I can’t move it for eight weeks. If I move it, the muscle will move away from the bone again and I can’t do the whole thing again! So it requires a lot of careful rehab. The external stitches have just been taken off and I am allowed to travel a bit. But that’s about it.

Are you disappointed with Ponting missing out on the IPL this season?
Ponting was only available for three matches. In fact he had a match a day after he landed, something John (Buchanan) never allows. Even Matthew (Mott) the field coach doesn’t like it. So Ponting sent us a request to be released this season. He said he would have been here if he had played all the 10 matches. Just to get used to the game here, he said, he would take two matches. “I will be doing more harm to the team than help it,” he wrote. He asked us very sweetly if it would be ok if he was excused this season. It was a very logical thing to do and just shows the good thinking on Ponting’s part. In the spirit of both the teams — Australia and Kolkata Knight Riders — it was the right thing to do to release him.

Where does that leave the KKR team in Season Two?
See, we have had sporadic camps... they have not been the best, but not the worst either. We have chosen some really good young players. The whole idea is to prepare the team for tomorrow. The August-September camp last year failed completely. Then we went to Australia, which was okay. The second camp sort of failed because we didn’t get all the people because of Ranji and other tournaments. We wondered whether we will ever get them together. But then the third camp turned out really well. We got these five-six young boys who are great. Some of them are even being considered prodigies. We have signed them on for the future. I have come to one realisation — trying to get a result overnight is not going to happen. You need to build a team. Basically in the last one year we have achieved 20 to 30 per cent of what we set out to achieve and that will tell in the championship.

What about the international players?
(Chris) Gayle will be here till May 3. He will play at least eight to nine matches. David Hussey is there... we hope he is not selected for the Aussie Test team. I know that’s a bad thing to say (laughs). Then there’s (Brendon) McCullum who will be there fully... We have seen the kind of form he is in right now. Ajantha (Mendis) is there throughout. Dada (Sourav Ganguly, of course) will get to practise from the 16th. You know, more than the game, in Twenty20, it is about the team spirit. John is very realistic about our chances. He says that we should aim to be in the last four and then see what happens.

Any regrets of buying the Calcutta team because you had the option of Rajasthan and Delhi...
You know what, I had this chat with Lalit (Modi) even before the IPL and I told him that two cities in the country represent sports to me and they are Calcutta and Goa. I don’t know whether it is because of the colonisation under the British and the Portuguese, but the sporty feel is there in these two places. From carrom to cricket. Like if I have to do films, I will do it in Mumbai. The facilities may be there in Calcutta but I would rather do it in Mumbai. These places just happen to represent certain aspects. Like if you want IT, go down south, man. You know when it comes to Calcutta, mujhe culture maloom hai, history maloom hai, Bengali zeal bhi maloom hai, par mujhe Calcutta sports hi lagta hai. I am very happy that the city has embraced me. I haven’t learnt the language yet. I have a problem with languages. That’s what I tell Mani (Ratnam) Sir... I can’t do Tamil yaar. But yes I have to learn the culture more. We now have a permanent office there. My wife’s relatives are there. Coming back to the team, inshallah we will reach there. Even Manchester United comes third. It’s a long-term plan. I want to do a stadium there. There are too many issues and sometimes I get tired but my two life ambitions are to build a world-class studio in Mumbai and a world-class stadium in Calcutta.

Shah Rukh reaches up to the ceiling of the car with his right hand to turn the ventilator on and starts smoking. The ventilator is overworked as he goes seamlessly from one cigarette to another. In no time the ashtray hole on the door of his car is filled to the brim. The car is the Smoking Khan’s hideout, as he is not allowed to light up in front of the kids — Aryan and Suhana — on the fifth and sixth floors of Mannat.

First 26/11 and now the attack on Lankan cricketers in Pakistan... Do you feel scared when you go out today?
No. I believe I am Allah’s good man. I am not affected by any of this. Like everybody worries about my shoulder injury. I have no iota of doubt in the goodness of life. I have no iota of doubt in the positivity of life. If you doubt it even for a bit, you are no longer positive. I also have no doubt that this hand will be all right in six months and I will be jumping and screaming again. I will go and hang from the 10th floor just to prove to myself that my hand is fit and also to prove to others and my kids. See, you can’t do much. You pray everyday. I have no issues about security. During Billu’s release, somebody came and threw something at my house. The commissioner of police came and asked me if I needed more security. I said I have enough. I have bullet-proof cars. If needed I can send one to Calcutta. But you know what, I have this strange feeling and I don’t know whether I should say this but I will never be attacked. I am too good a person and I give too much entertainment to everyone. Even the bad guy will say, ‘picture bhi toh dekhna hai uska’.

How did the My Name is Khan shoot go in the US?
We shot the second half. The first half is left. It’s come out well... main khud ke baare mein badhaa chadhaake nahin bolna chahta. I am playing an autistic person, so it’s very different for me. It’s not a very serious film. It’s a Forrest Gump kind of a film. You feel bad for this guy but there’s a lot of positivity in the film. Like a person who is not well can look at life so positively. Why can’t everyone do the same? It’s not about a disabled man’s fight against disability. It’s a disabled man’s fight against the disability that exists in the world — terrorism, hatred, fighting. I only do films with a subtext... I know normally my films don’t look and feel what I think about them. Because I am very clear that films should entertain. My Name is Khan is also about Islam and the way the world looks at Islam but we are not taking any sides. We are only trying to say that there are only good people and bad people. There are no good Hindus, bad Hindus, good Christians, bad Christians. Either you are a good person or a bad person. Religion is not the criterion, humanity is. The tagline we have put in the film is: “The first superhero with only one superpower — humanity”.

Like Rab Ne’s ordinariness was extraordinary...
And people liked him. I just learnt about this poll that 80 per cent of the audience liked the character of Suri. And to think of it, I made it on a real guy (a Paanchvi Pass contestant). Also the fact that you never question that a 40-year-old man is romancing a 18-year-old girl. That’s interesting. Here is a completely played down version of a movie star who is supposedly known as a superstar. A superstar is a rockstar. Here is a rundown version. If I wasn’t in the movies, I might have looked like Suri. Because I have to change my look everyday as an actor. We do exaggerate in cinema. Art is always larger than life. But here was a simple man with simple wants.

SRK’s driver’s mobile starts ringing even though the owner’s phone is in silent mode. But SRK doesn’t mind. After all, the driver’s ringtone is the Haule haule song from Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi. He doesn’t ask him to switch it off and continues the conversation.

Is there a lot of creative satisfaction in your work these days?

Yes, the last few films were very satisfying. I also really liked Billu. It’s a great thought — friends that you don’t forget. I loved Irrfan in it. I liked Chak De! India. I also really enjoyed Don. And now playing an autistic person in My Name is Khan is so supremely satisfying that I don’t want to work on any other movie for the rest of the year. Arre yeh bahut hai! I am so happy doing it. I did a lot of studies, a lot of research.

Is that something you are doing in the last few movies? Or did you always research your characters?
I have always done it. See, I have usually played the hero type and even then I have done studies. Like Don is taken from this man I knew who is really tough but walks like a girl. Obviously that man is not so famous that you will instantly recognise him. Like Darr is based on a Parsi friend of mine who used to stammer on specific words. So I made my character stammer only on Kiran... Kkkkkiran. As an actor my job is to observe, absorb and then take it out when called on to do so.

So how did you research for My Name is Khan?
I had done a play about autism with Barry John where I worked with an autistic kid. So when my writer and director in My Name is Khan sat with me, I gave them 25 more pages of research. I gave them more references... four different physical manifestations of autism. The eyes are very difficult to do. When you see me in the film, you will be shocked. To me it’s very difficult. With 100 people around you, to get those unfocussed, dead eyes is very difficult. Then I am saying dialogues with those eyes without expressing. I had to practise those eyes in my bathroom for 10 days before I got it right. Now I am teaching my children... pushing the eyeballs up, they stay there, then I go cock-eyed and then they go blank. Very difficult, very fulfilling.

The car is waiting at a traffic signal. A boy comes banging at the window. He shouts: “Aye Shah Rukh, aap ka photo aila hai, aap ka photo aila hai.” The star shouts back: “Thank you yaar, kahaan photo aila hai?” The kid smiles and runs away. It’s impossible to see inside the BMW through those dark window glasses. How does the boy at the traffic signal know who is inside? SRK smiles and says: “I think he knows the car.”

While the new heroes in Bollywood are being welcomed with open arms, do you feel that everyone’s being deliberately unkind to your recent films?
To me it doesn’t matter what the critics say. I have passed that stage. God bless them yaar! Hope they are happy. I have a very clear concept about all this. If you know why you are doing something, other people cannot waiver you off with their opinion. So if I know that I have worn white pants with a reason, and people keep telling me that it’s not in fashion, I am happy with my reason.

There have been a lot of ugly remarks from your colleagues in the industry...
I know those people. If I don’t like something, I call them and tell them so. Mostly they are misquoted. Like, if you say that Chidambaram has cancelled the IPL. Now he didn’t say that but that’s how people interpret things. Exactly like that. But we meet each other every evening and trust me there are people who you think don’t even like me or I don’t like them. Like Amitji was the first guy to come and meet me after the shoulder operation. He was in fact going to the hospital. I was like, where are you going sir? He said hospital. I said, main ghar aa gaya hoon. He said, main thak gaya hoon, kal aata hoon. Next evening he was there for four-five hours. People assume I hate him and he hates me. Earlier we used to talk about this — Amitji aisa kyun likh rahe hain?. Now, we don’t even do that. We are now sure that it’s a different world where people think Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan are like this. They have no clue of this real world. We have tried to explain 10-12 times but they don’t want to understand. They don’t like it like that. God bless them. Who they are talking about are the images of Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan that people have in their minds. We are different.

But what about Aamir Khan? Why did he go after you?
Aamir... he is my age. I have known him from the day I landed in Mumbai. Me, Ashutosh (Gowariker), Aamir, Makrand Deshpande, Neeraj Vohra... we were friends. If he says something I can call him and say what I feel. And he would be “Arre Shah, aisa nahin bola maine yaar!” Also I prefer talking to people directly rather than through the media. I say something to a journalist, he says something to another journalist... baat ghoomta rehta hai. The other day, in fact, we were sitting and chatting about this. I called him ullu ka pattha. I talk to him like this. People will never understand. That’s okay. Otherwise you are feeding more and more and more to the media. At that time pictures release pe thi, tab theek tha. Dono pictures (Rab Ne and Ghajini) ko publicity mil raha tha (laughs). Sometimes even the media should realise that maybe actors are using you. I don’t. I have a huge relationship with the media. It’s a need-based relationship and I think I am part of the media. Till the day I am an actor. And there’s nothing like a bad journalist. As I said you are a bad person or a good person. Your profession doesn’t make you bad. If you are okay being used, be used. You never know which actor is having the last laugh.

Coming back to KKR, what is your take on cheerleaders, especially after what happened last year with their dress code?
A profession should not be looked down upon. When I look at these young girls who want to be cheerleaders, I think of my daughter. Eight years from now, she could be one and I will be happy. I am a family man. I have a lot of respect for girls. If you think less of women, you will look down on their job. I really can’t do that. When I work with these really young girls in my movies, I really think of my daughter, who could be the same eight years from now. There’s a lot of innocence in all of them. Cheerleading is a profession rather than nangi ladkiyan naach rahi hai. Yeh kya baat hui yaar? Yeh toh wahiyaat baat ho gayi. It’s a very conservative, old-fashioned thought. We understand that but we don’t do much about it... phir koi aake bottle phenkega ghar ke baahar. Their clothes are not cheap. We are not cheap people. My wife, Karan (Johar), Manish (Malhotra)... they design the clothes. When we make people wear bikinis in films, it’s meant to make them look attractive and not vulgar.

Did you watch Dada’s last match?
Of course, I did. I wanted to go but I couldn’t. We sent him a watch. Also it didn’t strike me then but I later thought we should have bought 10,000 tickets and should have had people in Kolkata Knight Riders jerseys cheering for him. For us, Dada has not retired.

Are you as pumped up this time as you were the last time?
I am much more charged after the loss last year (laughs). Everything will be good from now. I felt that when we got (Mashrafe) Mortaza. Before the auction, I told my team that the only team who will go for Mortaza will be Mohali. See we are all friends and when I learnt that Nita bhabhi (Ambani) wanted Dominic (Thornely) I asked my guys to let go. But I instinctively felt that Mohali would try and increase the price of Mortaza. They didn’t tell me even though I meet Preity very often. So I messaged my team at the Goa auction, ‘make sure we get Mortaza’. Whatever it takes... even if it’s for the sake of friendship. We also have to show Bengali spirit at some point of time. We want to win the IPL and we will have it. This year should be played like that.

The car reaches the Yash Raj Studio where Shah Rukh has to crown the six official cheerleaders aka Angels for the Kolkata Knight Riders. He opens the car door with his right hand and stalks out. Like a Royal Bengal tiger, wounded and hungry.

Later in the shoot at Yash Raj Studio: Shah Rukh’s friends at his TV production unit Red Chillies Idiot Box, which is producing the cheerleader show Knights & Angels, wanted the King to give a jharokha darshan during the final episode and crown the winning girls. But Shah Rukh being Shah Rukh stayed for three whole segments and actually danced at the end of it all. Gauri wouldn’t have approved if she was around. But it sure made a certain Sourav Ganguly break his promise of never dancing again (after his terrible footwork in the Hero Honda ad nine years ago). Seeing SRK’s infectious energy, even with the sling just about holding the broken shoulder in place, Dada joined Shah Rukh and did an impromptu jig to Korbo lorbo jeetbo re. All those who thought that the owner and the captain were not on the same page should have seen them on stage. Wanted: An action replay of King and Dada after winning IPL 2.

We are living in an uncertain world: SRK

Underlining that people were living in an "uncertain" world, Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan today said that one should abstain from indulging in inhuman activities in the name of God as no religion supported such acts.

The actor said that a lot of uncertainty and hatred around the world was the manifestation of extreme religious viewpoints and misinterpretation of religion.

"If you want to kill please kill each other but stop using His (God's) name do it. God has not sanctioned wars, holy or unholy," he said while speaking at the Indian Today Conclave -- "Can Art Overcome Hatred?" Referring to the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks and the very recent attack on the Sri Lankan cricket team in Lahore, Khan said, "We are living in a hugely uncertain world. We are riding in the same boat. There is no hiding place for anyone anywhere in the world. We are very vulnerable." The actor said being a Muslim had never come in his way to success and fame.

"Without being pompous I can say that I am one of the leading stars of this country for the last 20 years and I am a Muslim by birth and I practice Isalm as religion. I am supposedly a big star in a supposedly Hindu-dominated nation. That speaks volumes about how art can transcend religion," said Shah Rukh.
