Bollywood cage fight hits Canada as fans flock to multiplexes, torn between a well-hyped musical and a sombre love story...

A heavyweight battle between two Bollywood films has made the trip from India to Toronto.

In one corner, it's superstar director/actor Shah Rukh Khan's Om Shanti Om. In the other, it's newcomers in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Saawariya, for the first time backed by the might of a big Hollywood studio.

It's a battle of song, dance and celluloid that has kept Bollywood fans waiting for months. The worldwide release of the two films last night comes after months of hype, publicity and hot soundtracks.

Shah Rukh's Six-pack Abs Wins Hands Down!

In the clash of two big budget Diwali releases, the verdict is out. Sharukh Khan's 'Om Shanti Om' seems to have clicked with the audiences across the country while Sanjay Leela Bhansali's 'Saawariya'-launchpad for Bollywood's new star kids, Ranbir Kapoor and Sonam Kapoor is trailing behind.

Theatre owners and multiplex's officials across the country point out that though the initial bookings for both the films have been exceptionally high, the winner in the long run would be OSO.

"If one goes by the pre-booking figures, then both the films have been able to get the initial euphoria right with packed houses from the first show and weekend booked completely. But in terms of reactions from the audience, we can say that it is mixed," says Shalu Sabharwal, Vice President, Marketing, PVR Cinemas, leading multiplex chain in the country.

"OSO is more commercial whereas Saawariya is a classic. People first prefer watching OSO and then Saawariya. The clear winner would be known only by the middle of the coming week," she adds.

OSO seems to be a favourite down South too with people thronging the halls in big numbers. "The clear winner in terms of audience reaction is definitely OSO. The demand for the movie is higher than Bhansali's Saawariya. The former is a well packaged movie with Shahrukh Khan and Deepika Padukone wooing the audience in perfect 70's style," says Vinod Babu, General Manager, Inox Cinema, Chennai.

"Shahrukh Khan looks amazing in his six-pack abs. He seems to be springing around with his new packed zeal. He is no doubt the Bollywood King," gushes Priyanka Hoon, 54 a housewife is Gurgoan who watched the first day first show on Friday.

Mr. Khalid Mohamed's much awaited review gives OSO a well deserved 4 star rating.

Yesterday’s gangsta moll, Bindu, is now bigger than a shopping mall. No one can carry off a suit as sharply as Dharmendra, jackflash like Jeetendra, and hey dude, Mithun Chakraborty is still the disco champ. As for Rekha, guys, ma’am can blow the stockings off any fashion ramp. Drool.

Want to celebrate the crunch-popcorn-Manmohan Desai movies of yore? Then you’ve come to the right place. Farah Khan’s Om Shanti Om is dedicated to the imperishable magic of the movies. Flog them or fume over them, but nothing compares to those tickets which make fantasies real. Mmm, that’s entertainment.

SRK's sterling performance in OSO as the sweet Om and corny OK proves, once again, that he is versatility personified. While watching the film one can not help being amazed by the actor's range and the thought that 'this is the same actor who played Kabir Khan in Chak De'. WOW!

I can't think of another film that packs in as many laughs as director Farah Khan's Om Shanti Om. It's set in the seventies and features Shah Rukh Khan as Om Prakash Makhija, a Bollywood junior artiste who's got stars in his eyes and a crush on the country's biggest female star, Shantipriya, played by newcomer Deepika Padukone. Om Shanti Om takes one of Hindi cinema's most popular film themes of that period - the reincarnation drama - and turns it on its head by constructing a story set around that very theme, but in a whole new context.
