Shah Rukh Khan plays guest editor of Mid Day on birthday eve

Bollywood superstar Shahrukh Khan yesterday celebrated his 42nd birthday by taking over as guest editor of Mid-Day, a popular tabloid published from Mumbai. Last year, on January 28, he played the 'guest editor' of the Times of India.

The actor, whose latest film Om Shanti Om will see its world premiere in London next Thursday, played the role of a 'guest editor' to perfection.

“The Mid-Day that you are reading today, I must confess, may not entirely be an SRK collection of stories. I have realised, it is a mammoth task to bring out a daily newspaper. But this special issue has a spread of my choice of stories," he wrote in his signed editorial. According to Khan, his children Aryan and Suhana don't read newspapers. "But I do. Every morning, I read eight newspapers in all.

I read them carefully, thoroughly, often wondering why journalists give more importance to one story, less to another," he continued.

"Why do they display one story more prominently while on the same page, reduce the size and structure of the other. What is the thought behind the choice? Who could be the people making this decision? What do they look like, how do they behave?

"Walking into the MiD-Day office has been one such eye-opener. Initially, I felt apprehensive, sitting through the editorial meeting. But contrary to my belief, I found journalists actually discussing the merits of every story."

The Times group – which includes the Times of India and the Economic Times among others – pioneered the concept of 'guest editors' in
India. The powerful media empire invites prominent celebrities to 'edit' one of their titles for a day. The edition then carries exhaustive interviews with the celebrity and his/her views on the paper and the stories selected for the day.

Celebrities who have 'guest edited' the Times and the Economic Times include former President APJ Abdul Kalam – when he was the country's President – Finance Minister P Chidambaram, Shahrukh Khan, Abhishek Bachchan, Infosys chief mentor N R Narayana Murthy, Sania Mirza, writer Vikram Seth and Deepak Chopra.

Interview excerpts

Prateeksha: There are so many epithets being showered on him at this point that I don't know what I can call him, so let me ask him. So SRK, all of 42 years... young, should I say? What should I call you?

Shah Rukh: You can call me anything you want. I have been called worse, and better than this! It's not important what i am called, it's important what I do. With the years that I have been given in this line of work and otherwise. But I am happy with whatever you call me, you say whatever you want to.

Prateeksha: Could we call you 'Dimple Darling' - because since we were children we have been identifying you with that?

Shah Rukh: Yeah that sounds nice. But there are so many people I see with dimples now. Kiron Kher has dimples, Shreyas Talpade has dimples, Deepika Padukone has big dimples - the other day my kids were trying to compare my dimples with everybody eles's - But yes, Dimple Darling is good. I am the original Dimple Darling.

Prateeksha: Completely. Now, this year we were all surprised by SRK's new leaner, meaner look that he sprung on us, so what are we looking forward to next year?

Shah Rukh: As an actor if I get an opportunity - as a performer more than an actor - to entertain people in different ways I never have shirked that - whether through serious cinema like say 'Chak De' or a family show like 'Kaun Banega Crorepati'. I always like to go ahead and try something new. I know there will be times when people may not like it, there are a lot of comparisons, sometimes they are good and sometimes they are bad.

But as someone who believes that I can entertain a lot of people through television, through films and through magazines I give it the best shot. So I haven't planned anything for next year - this year has hopefully been a good one, KBCs and 'Chak De' and now 'Om Shanti Om'.

And when I say it's a good year it's not about the success but whether people have been happy, have I been able to make more people happy than I did last year.

Prateeksha: Over 15 years how would you rate the importance of the people who made you King Khan - would it be the fans, the critics, or the film makers you have worked with?

Shah Rukh: I think everybody has a little bit of input, but over the last three-four years I have realised that I am right in the middle of what is - and rightly so - the most happening platform or aspect of India right now, which is the media. - whether it's entertainment, news, television or internet - I would first like to thank you guys.

I mean, everybody has been very fair to me. There have been incidents where I have gotten disturbed with some stories, sometimes people talk about xyz, but it's absolutely alright. I think overall the media has been very kind to me. Thank you for making me the star I am.

More than that I have always said and always will maintain that maybe I do not deserve this much, but only because of the goodness of the audience - so I want to thank them from the bottom of my heart. And I will work day and night and put in my blood and sweat to make sure that I will never let you down. Till I am alive and working in front of a camera I will try to pass on entertainment to everyone. Obviously my directors have been good also - I think life has been more than fair to me.

Shah Rukh Khan doesn't fret over top-star status

The commercial success of others has never made him feel "any lesser or more successful," Khan, who turned 42 Friday, told The Times of India newspaper.

Over the past decade, Indian movie magazines have given Khan the highest rating in polls on the country's best actors, but stars like Salman Khan, Aamir Khan and Akshay Kumar are serious contenders for the top slot.

"Today the concept of a single star ruling seems to be slowly phasing out," said Khan. "It's like a league of movie stars, all very secure, happy, singing, dancing."

Bollywood - India's prolific movie industry - is famous for romantic, musical films filled with song and dance numbers that often have little connection to the plot.

Khan has acted in more than 50 movies. He played the coach of an Indian women's hockey team in his recent blockbuster "Chak De" or "Go for it."

He compared Bollywood's number-one slot to professional tennis rankings that change based on current performance. "It's beautiful. Aamir, Salman, Akshay and I, we are all big stars today," Khan said. "It's like tennis ranking. One Grand Slam and there you go."

There's Something About SRK You Didn't Know...

If we say that he is a man who not only walks Bollywood, but also talks, runs, sleeps, and even gets up Bollywood, then, we will be wrong big time. Actually, it's the other way round. It's Bollywood that runs, walks, sleeps and gets up with him!

To write about him, one needs to hire a person, who can think beyond A-Z, coz' if one has to pen something about this man; even 26 alphabets won't be enough!

Well, he is none other than the man of all reasons and the man of all seasons…..the one and only Shah Rukh Khan! He is a living example of what hard work can do to a person! It's not just his films, but every action of his becomes a national event, an event that evokes a certain magnetism that everyone just get swayed by (t)his pull!

And what can be more apt for this man, than on his birthday today, that we spoke to his closest associates and asked them to tell us something about SRK that you would like to know…that we would loooooooooove to know.
We asked them 2 Questions:

1. Which is the one thing that you like about Shah Rukh the most?
2. One thing about SRK that the world doesn't know, but should know?

Over to you folks…

Ritesh Sidhwani:
The one thing that I like about the inimitable SRK is the fact that he always spreads positive energy and vibrations all over the place. You can just count on him even at 2 in the night! And it is this positivity about this man that eventually grows over you, so much so that you start missing him when he is not around! That's' SRK for you.

As far as one unknown thing about him is concerned, I feel that he has got some kind of magnet attached to his body. Maybe that's how he has got such a great 'pull' over others!

Arjun Rampal:
The one thing that I like about SRK is the fact that he is a very humble person and so-very down to earth.

And the one thing about him that the world doesn't know is the fact that he is trying to quit smoking

Vidya Malvade:
The one thing that I like about SRK is the fact that he is the fantastic actor and an even better human being. He is what fun and youth is all about, even at this age!

I wish there was something that I knew about him that the world didn't know! His life is an open book for all!

Sajid Khan:
The one thing that I like about SRK is his intelligence and that he also happens to be the nicest human being I have ever met in my life.

As far as one unknown thing about SRK is concerned, the fact remains that Shah Rukh doesn't have any secrets; I think his life is like an open book!

Barry John:
The one thing that I like about SRK is his energy level and his ability to infuse excitement in projects that wouldn't have garnered as much attention otherwise. I also appreciate Shah Rukh's dedication towards his work.

And the one thing about SRK that I feel the world doesn't know, but should know is the fact that SRK ensures his efforts are appreciated by his fans as well as the people around him.

Archana Puran Singh:
The one thing that I like about SRK is his cheeks.

And for the unknown aspect of his, I feel that he hides his insecurities with his charms and bravado.

Hrishita Bhatt:
The one thing that I like about SRK is that he is not just a wonderful human being, but possesses immense energy.

As far as one unknown thing about SRK is concerned, I wish that I knew about it. All that I can think of him is the fact that SRK is very humble and very down to earth, not only on screen, but even in real life.

Jackie Shroff:
The one thing that I like about SRK is that he is very focused and dedicated towards work, just like my younger brother Anil Kapoor.

As far as the one unknown thing about him is concerned, there is nothing unknown about him.

Amrita Rao:
The one thing that I like about SRK is the fact that he still looks the same as he looked like a newcomer.

As far as one unknown thing about him is concerned, I not only feel, but, I am very sure about the fact that he is an extraordinary man blessed with extraordinary talent and energy. He is nothing short of being a 'Midas Touch' man!

Farah Khan:
The one thing that I like about SRK is his sense of humor.

And for his unknown aspect, I feel that he eats the same food, day in and day out, which happens to be 'Tandoori Chicken' and 'Salad', since the last 15 years.
