SRK loses to SRK

In times of recession, Eros International is hedging its bets on a money making director — Farah Khan, rather than bank on Anubhav Sinha.

Farah’s successful track record has put the brakes on Anubhav’s Ra 1 temporarily. She will begin shooting her film Happy New Year ahead of schedule, while Ra 1 has been pushed from September to next year.

A few days ago, we told you how Farah Khan had to rush with the script of the first half of Happy New Year to San Francisco where Shah Rukh is shooting currently. It was a known fact that Farah was supposed to start her film only early next year. We hear, Eros International insisted that Farah’s film should start this year, by the end of November.

Ra 1 is being presented by Eros International and produced by Red Chillies. It was slated to go on the floors before Farah’s film, “That’s true,” says the source, “But when Eros studied the project Ra 1, they felt that this film may not derive sufficient returns in today’s economy. They felt that it would be better if the commercial director Farah Khan put her project on the floors first. They wanted to back that first and wait for things to improve on the economy front. They will go with Ra 1 but only at a later date.”

Mumbai Mirror had also reported on June 27 that Shah Rukh has been advised not to indulge in heavy-duty action. This, combined with Farah’s track record, has come in the way of Anubhav Sinha’s film.

Despite repeated calls and text messages, Eros International CEO Sunil Lulla remained unavailable for comment.

Happy New Year stars Shah Rukh Khan in the lead. The remaining cast is yet to be finalised. Farah also has to complete the script of the second half of the film.

London calling Dr Shah Rukh!

Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan has been nominated to receive an honorary doctorate in arts and culture from Britain's University of Bedfordshire.

Shah Rukh, the first foreign actor to be conferred the Malaysian title of Datuk - akin to a British knighthood - last year, will receive his first doctorate July 10.

The actor was chosen for the doctorate by NGO Routes to Roots, a member of the World Association of Non-Governmental Organization (WANGO) that works closely with universities and educational trusts in various countries, said a press release.

"I am delighted that Routes to Roots nominated me for the honorary doctorate in arts and culture from the Bedfordshire University, Britain, and it will be my pleasure to receive it personally July 10 in London," said Shah Rukh.

Routes to Roots is a non-profit charitable organisation and endeavours to bring people and cultures together across the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (Saarc) countries in general and India and Pakistan in particular. Actor Juhi Chawla and filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt are among its patrons.

"Shah Rukh Khan was selected by us after careful study since he has his head and heart at the right place in spite of being crowned the king of Bollywood. The superstar has done immense work for the underprivileged and downtrodden and has always come forward for charities in case of natural disasters," said Tina Vachani, co-founder, Routes to Roots.

According to Rakesh Gupta, who is also with the NGO: "Indian students at the university would love to have the youth icon Shah Rukh to be a fellow alumni once he receives his doctorate."

Shahrukh Khan Hits the Bay

He's a handsome movie star with more global influence than the Dalai Lama. His name is Shahrukh Khan, and for the past month he's been filming his next blockbuster -- right here in the Bay Area.

In the family drama "My Name Is Khan," the Bollywood actor plays a man living with Asperger's syndrome, a form of autism that impacts social interaction. He and his wife, played by Kajol, one of Indian's most famous actresses, portray an average Indian family living in San Francisco.

At its core, "My Name Is Khan" is a love story about a husband and wife, but, producer Prashant Shah says, it also seeks to redefine what it means to be a Muslim in America today.

The Bay Area was chosen because of its people, landscape and weather, Shah explains. Furthermore, Karan Johar, arguably India's hottest young director, wanted to shoot here because the three other movies he made in the United States were all filmed on the East Coast.

The production, shot at various locations in Livermore, San Jose and San Francisco, has been tight-lipped and closed to media. There are several reasons for this secrecy, the producer says.

For starters, the highly anticipated film is the first project in eight years to unite Kajol, Khan and Johar. Their last picture, 2001's "Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham," earned seven international film awards.

In addition, Khan and the film's other stars, including Tanay Chheda of "Slumdog Millionaire" (he played Jamal,

the lead character, as a teenager) have had hundreds of fans lingering outside their San Francisco hotel, hoping to catch a glimpse. No one wants that to get out of hand.

Lastly, Indian cinema typically sets fashion trends, and the styles in high-profile films such as "My Name Is Khan" wind up on runways across Asia and Europe, Shah says. So the filmmakers can't risk any images getting out before the picture's release, slated for February 2010, implicitly so its unique costumes remain credited to the people who designed them.

Their audience keeps growing. In recent years, Bollywood's popularity has spread far beyond India.

"Spanish is the second official language of the United States, and French is the same in Canada, yet every Friday there are two Bollywood films, not Spanish or French films, released in at least 100 theaters in major cities across North America," Shah says. "Our films don't have typical Hollywood massacre, violence and nudity. So they are appropriate for a 5-year-old and a 92-year-old. That is the appeal."

While "My Name Is Khan" won't have the lively dance numbers Bollywood fans have come to expect, it will have a Bollywood soundtrack.

And Khan, known for his theatricality, will tone it down for this tear-jerker. But that won't change his mass appeal. In January, Newsweek magazine listed him at No. 41 on its list of the "50 Most Powerful People" in the world. According to the magazine, his influence tops Oprah Winfrey's and the Dalai Lama's.

"He is more popular than Will Smith and Brad Pitt combined," Shah says. "If Tom Hanks walked through Piccadilly Circus in London, a few people would ask for his autograph and let him walk on by. If Shahrukh was there, you would need at least 20 bobbies (British police) to have him escorted across the street. In less than an hour, there are usually 15,000 people gathered."

Details are spare, but Shah confirms that Khan will perform and sign autographs for fans at 8 p.m. Friday at the Fairmont Hotel, 950 Mason St., San Francisco. Shah anticipates a crowd of at least 5,000.

Shah Rukh Khan's 'Ra 1' postponed

Shah Rukh Khan has postponed his ambitious Sci-fi action thriller Ra 1 to next year.

The delay will give him enough time to fully recover from his shoulder injury sustained on the sets of Dulha Mil Gaya, and be fully fit for the intense action sequences planned in Ra 1.

The postponement follows a medical checkup that Shah Rukh underwent in the US where he is currently shooting for Karan Johar’s, My Name is Khan, with co-star Kajol.

The Anubhav Sinha helmed Ra 1 was to go on floors in September 2009 after having been earlier pushed back from February 2009 due to SRK's injury.

SRK will play a superhero in the film which will be replete with SFX and state of the art gizmos.

“SRK has been suffering because of his shoulder injury. He had injured himself on the sets of Dulha Mil Gaya a few months ago. After his surgery, SRK started shooting for Karan Johar’s My Name is Khan, which he will soon complete. However, he decided to temporarily put Ra 1 on hold as he is required to do some serious action sequences in the film," a source told Mumbai Mirror.

On completing My Name is Khan, Shah Rukh will start filming for Farah Khan’s Happy New Year.

Shahrukh to star with Barack Obama

Bollywood Baadshah Shahrukh Khan is all set to star with US President Barack Obama. Not quite really but Shahrukh will be seen starring with a lookalike of the US President in his upcoming movie My Name is Khan. The casting crew is in search for an African American who can resemble Obama. The exact nature of the character is not known but sources claim Obama's character play a significant part in the story.

My Name Is Khan is directed by Karan Johar and based on the life of minorities in the United States post 9/11. The movie is currently being shot in San Fransisco and also stars Jimmy Shergill and Sonya Jehan. Interestingly another movie New York which releases this weekend also has a similar plot. My Name is Khan is one of the most anticipated movies of the year as it will have the hit pair of Shahrukh Khan and Kajol in the lead after a gap of 8 years.

SRK says no to Raj Thackeray!

Shah Rukh Khan has clearly had enough of controversies. He turned down an offer to play Raj Thackeray in Raju Kokate’s Mumbai Tiger.

Before approaching SRK, Kokate had worked on the actor’s look in the film . Marathi film and stage actor Ashok Shinde, who has now been signed on for the role, bears an uncanny resemblance to the politician.

Shah Rukh recently reportedly also turned down an offer from Ashutosh Gowariker, his Swades director. After the 2004 film, which flopped at the box-office, Shah Rukh has flatly refused to work with the director for his next venture.
Ashutosh offered SRK a role in a period film with Rani Mukerji as his screen partner, but after Swades, Shah Rukh isn't taking any chances.

Apparently, working with Gowariker on Swades wasn't one of the highlights of Shah Rukh's life, but Ashutosh asked him to forget the past and start afresh. Ashutosh also offered him incentives to make up for the experience. Our source said, “Ashutosh even told Shah Rukh that they could co-produce the film and he had no issues with Shah Rukh's style of working on commission basis. But even this did not evoke a favourable response.”

Shahrukh Khan to be given honorary doctorate

Award winning Bollywood badshah Shahrukh Khan is to be given an honorary doctorate in arts and culture from the University of Bedfordshire in London next month.

Shahrukh, who has a huge fan base across the globe, is also a film producer and television host and will receive his award at the Hotel Courthouse, London on 10 July from Vice Chancellor Les bdon, CBE.

He was nominated by Routes 2 Roots, a non-governmental organisation which endeavours to bring together people, cultures and values from across southern Asia, in particular India and Pakistan.

University of Bedfordshire Deputy Vice Chancellor (External Relations) Ashraf Jawaid, said: "We are absolutely delighted to confer this honorary doctorate on Shahrukh Khan. He has made an outstanding contribution to the arts, culture and media which is recognised around the world."

Shahrukh started his career in the late 1980s appearing in several television serials. He made his film debut with the commercially successful Deewana in 1992 and since then has gone on to play a variety of critically acclaimed roles.

He has won seven Filmfare Best Actor Awards and appeared in films including Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge (1995), Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998), Chak De India (2007), Om Shanti Om (2007) and Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi (2008) which remain some of Bollywood’s biggest hits.

Films including Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (2001), Veer Zaara (2004) and Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna (2006) have been hits overseas making Shah Rukh one of the most successful actors of Hindi cinema. Since 2000 Shah Rukh has branched out into film production and television presenting.

He is married with two children. In April 2007 a life-size wax statue of him was unveiled at Madame Tussauds in London. During the same year, he was accorded the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (Order of the Arts and Literature) award by the French government for his "exceptional career".

Religious leaders dismiss fatwa against Shahrukh Khan

Bareilly: An Islamic seminary has issued a fatwa against Bollywood star Shahrukh Khan for allegedly making comments against Islam even as Muslim religious leaders distanced themselves from the decree, calling it “unnecessary” as the actor had offered his clarification.

“A person making a remark like the one attributed to Shahrukh is a kafir (non-believer) and is struck out of Islam,” said the fatwa issued by Mufti Mohammed Shoeb Raza Qadri and Mufti Muti-ur-Rehman of the Darul-uloom-Mazhar-e- Islam. Such a person must offer an immediate apology to return to Islam, the fatwa said.

Shahrukh Khan has strongly denied the comments attributed to him in an interview published in a magazine, saying he had been misquoted.

Case registered
Last week, a criminal case was registered in Mumbai against Shahrukh Khan and the publisher of the magazine under section 295-A (deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious sentiments) and section 34 (acts done by several persons with common interest) of the Indian Penal Code.

Bareilly-based Markazi Darul Ifta, which is responsible for issuing fatwas for the Barelvi sect, dismissed the decree saying the move by the two clerics was “unnecessary.”

“If someone is saying that he has not made statements [against the Prophet], then what is the need to issue a fatwa,” a spokesperson of the Markazi Darul Ifta, Maulana Shahbuddin said.

Darul-Uloom Deoband spokesman Ashraf Usmani said, “We have no plans to issue such fatwa. The fatwa issued against Shahrukh is not significant.”

Another cleric Maulana Yaseen Misbahi said, “Such kind of fatwa should not be issued on the basis of media reports.”

Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy's office burgled, but MNIK is safe!

As is by now well know, earlier this month the recording studio of the composer trio of Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy was broken into and computers and other items were burgled. In fact many of their unrecorded and also unused tunes (that were stored were on those computers) were also stolen/destroyed.

It may be termed as Karan Johar's good fortune that the tapes of the recorded but unreleased songs of his upcoming film, the Shahrukh Khan and Kajol starrer, MY NAME IS KHAN (lying in the room adjacent to the one burgled), were left untouched.

Here's hoping that Karan and SEL's good luck continues and MY NAME IS KHAN, presently being shot in San Francisco and other locales of US, continues the golden run of the previous SRK-Kajol ventures!

Mullahs victimise SRK with fatwa

Shah Rukh Khan seemed headed for trouble after he was sued for making statements that he has denied.

Shah Rukh KhanA Mumbai-based businessmen has, on the basis of an interview published in a magazine, filed a case claiming that SRK had said things derogatory to Islam's prophet. The magazine has since apologised and corroborated Shah Rukh's statement that it was at fault.

However, this has not stopped the fatwas from being pronounced. After a police case, Khan faces a series of fatwas from Maulvis in Uttar Pradesh's Bareilly, who have apostatised him and have threatened to have his marriage to Gauri annulled. "It is a publicity stunt from these clergymen," said one cleric, "Nobody can be condemned to punishment on the basis of hearsay."

"If this was someone else other than Shah Rukh, they would not bother," said Shams-ur-Rahman Usmani, a cleric from Deoband. "This is a good way for Mullahs to get themselves on TV channels," said Usmani, "What they are doing is un-Islamic and it is victimisation of a good man who is not only a good citizen but has always shown his respect to religion."
The magazine that is causing Khan trouble is has alleged that Shah Rukh Khan is Time n Style.

Over the weekend, Shah Rukh has left no stone unturned to clarify that the comment was a mistake on the part of the reporter or a "writing error". He said that he had named Prophet Mohammad the greatest, most impressive personalities in history. SRK said that as a Muslim, it is his most important agenda to stand up for the tenets of Islam. He thinks Prophet Mohammad is the most important positive figure in history and Islam. The magazine also published a corrigendum on Thursday accepting the error.

After his last two stints as Quizmaster went bust, Shah Rukh is all set to sail uncharted waters again by turning Quizmaster for India’s premiere B-school IIPM for their annual business and marketing quiz program.

"Come to IIPM, I'll see you there," is how Shah Rukh Khan is vying students, the actor has signed a three year deal with Arindam Chaudhari and the show starts August 1st. Arindam Chaudhari stated, “Shah Rukh has been chosen because of his sound knowledge in Economics. In addition to it, the actor has a global appeal, which is very important for enhancing the popularity of the quizzing events. His suave marketing skills and sharp intelligence have made him an automatic choice for the job of quizmaster.”

Economics we understand, with the amount of ads he’s done, along with the ones in his kitty the actor sure knows how rake in all that moolah. Not all of his ventures have fared as well as the actor would have thought. Kaun Banega Crorepati and Kya Aap Paachvi Pass Se Tez, both of which Shah Rukh hosted came and went without a whiff in the air.

Still with his latest debacle at the IPL, the actor is trying hard to make up for all those losses, and what better than the telly, his tried and tested friend. “Everything we do at IIPM is grand, distinct, pioneering and above all else global,” Arindham added. We hopes Arindam’s latest venture works well in his favour considering his last film outing debacle... Rok Sako Toh Rok Lo Arindam Ko!

KJo terrified after SRK backlash

After the backlash to Shah Rukh Khan’s statements on Prophet Mohammad, a terrified Karan Johar intensifies research for My Name is Khan

Filmmakers have to be careful when making films on subjects that might hurt people’s sentiments. And more so, if the filmmaker is Karan Johar, making a film on terrorism with Shah Rukh Khan in the lead. Given the flurry over the actor’s recent comments on Prophet Mohammad, Karan has gone back to his research books, lest his film, My Name is Khan causes any controversy.

Karan knows he’s walking on glass here with his film and is taking every precaution to see that he doesn’t cross the line. In fact, all filmmakers are putting in extra effort to make sure that they maintain religious and cultural decorum. From Rahul Dholakia, who is making Lamha on Kashmir and the issue of identity in the valley, to Kabir Khan, whose New York is about an NRI Muslim’s confinement in the US for suspected terrorism, they’re all praying that their sensitive films be taken in the right light. They’re hoping that the intolerant sections of the society do not raise an outcry for apparent slights to their religion and beliefs.

Following the unforeseen volatile reaction to Shah Rukh’s statements, Karan is re-checking the facts that form the basis of his research on the film. Reveals a source, “My Name is Khan is a new territory for Karan. He has never done such a subject before. Though Karan insists it’s humane not a political subject, the fact is My Name is Khan is about Islamic isolation and about one individual Muslim’s fight for his dignity in an increasingly hostile world. The last thing Karan wants is fundamentalist groups questioning him about the film.”

There are already murmurs of protest against the film and it can be recalled that while shooting in the US, the unit was denied permission to shoot in a local mosque and a few Muslim members of the unit were simply denied visas to go to US for the shoot.

Our source adds, “Karan is only more adamant now and won’t have his film stopped by protestors. My name is Khan and Qurbaan, his films on sensitive subjects continue to have Muslims Shah Rukh and Saif Ali Khan in lead roles.”

Meanwhile, Rani Mukerji is finally over her Yash Raj hangover. Her previous three films under the YRF banner: Laaga Chunri Mein Daag, Ta Ra Rum Pum and Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic tanked at the box-office.

While Shah Rukh Khan remained unavailable for comment, Ashutosh Gowariker chose not to speak.

'I always follow the word of the Prophet'

SRK clarifies that he has never said anything against the Prophet in an interview

It is really unfortunate that a section of people are reacting to some interview of mine in the way that is best describeable as an unfounded overreaction.

To clarify...there is a mistake either in the way my statement is printed or misinterpretation on behalf of the writer of the piece.

When asked who I think are the most influential people in the world, I had stated that on the negative side there are a few and very clearly said which is also my utmost belief that Prophet Mohammad has had the most positive influence on the world.

I think the way it has been written makes it read otherwise and I don't think the writer intended it to be so either.

It's just a grammatical and writing oversight. But obviously some people would like to believe baselessly that I have belittled our Prophet.

This is completely wrong because if one was to see my interviews over the past 20 yrs, I always quote on the teachings of the Prophet and how relevant his words are in a positive way.

Whether I speak on terrorism or women or just tolerance I always follow the word of the Prophet because that is what I have been brought up on and that is what I have studied and believed.

As a matter of fact, I personally try and follow all the tenets laid down by the Prophet.

It is unfortunate when people around the world say that I speak so well on behalf of my religion always, there is a section of people in my country who have not understood and appreciated my stance on Islam and the Prophet and are reacting to a misprint.

I would appeal to the good hearts of all people, Muslim and otherwise, that before the media makes all of us a tool for sensationalising every little misinformation, please look at this and all issues with a clearer perspective and only then react.

I have for so many years led a life as a good human being and a Muslim as has been possible, why would I take a stance of hurting the sentiments of my own people.

My parents, Allah bless their souls, would never forgive me if I did something against the teachings of the Koran and the Prophet.

I think I am a good Muslim and I don't need to explain that to anyone, but hopefully the people who are reacting wrongly, will have it in their hearts to respect their own Muslim brother and teachings of our religion and see sense and please stop the whole overreaction to a printing error, for it is nothing more than that, I assure.

For years, I have spoken not only to my friends and family, but to everyone about my great belief in the words of the Prophet.

Why would I, in any which way, lessen the importance of the most revered messenger of Allah and lessen my own existence as a human being and a Muslim?

Hope the matter gets sorted and we move onto all the better ways of thinking and loving our people and our religion.

And because of the printing/misinterpretation if any sentiments are hurt, I ask for forgiveness first from Allah and then from all those who are emotionally disturbed and promise that I will always check the copy of the journalists who do interviews with me, especially on sensitive issues.

That would be a practical solution to curbing any such misunderstanding in the future. Hope this will end the matter peacefully.

Shahrukh Khan blames controversy on ‘writing error’

Bollywood superstar Shahrukh Khan yesterday denied he had “hurt the religious sentiments” of Muslims and said his comments to a magazine were misinterpreted due to a “writing error”.

On Thursday, the Mumbai Aman Committee (MAC) filed a police complaint after its members read in the Time’N Style-Luxury magazine that Khan had listed Prophet Muhammad as one of the most unimpressive personalities in history alongside Adolf Hitler and Winston Churchill.

But Khan said it was a “writing error” and that he had named the Prophet among the most impressive personalities in history.

“Obviously I think that there is no more important figure in history than Prophet Muhammad in the most positive way possible. Also, being a Muslim and standing up for the tenets of Islam is my most important agenda. If they (MAC) have seen my interviews on TV about Islam and Prophet Muhammad, they would know it’s a writing error and not a thought or view that I believe in,” Khan said.

“For all practical purposes, Prophet Muhammad is the most important positive figure in Islam,” he added.

The magazine published a corrigendum in all Mumbai newspapers on Thursday accepting the error.

The corrigendum stated: “This is with reference to the interview with Shahrukh Khan that featured in Time’N Style-Luxury Vol-1 issue: The answer to question ‘According to you who is the most impressive figure in history?’ should have appeared as: ‘There are lots of them. Some negative ones like Hitler. Then Napoleon, Winston Churchill were impressive.

“ ‘If I can call it history then the most impressive, positive figure Prophet Muhammad and from recent times there are the nice ones like Nelson Mandela, Gandhiji and Mother Teresa.’ This is a clarification and the error is deeply regretted.’”
A police official, however, confirmed that the case had not been withdrawn even after the corrigendum was published.

FIR against Shah Rukh Khan for comments against Islam

Cops slap tough clause on actor after businessman alleges insult to Prophet in a recent interview

Khalid Babu Qureshi is insistent on dragging Shah Rukh Khan to court. Enraged at King Khan for allegedly making a negative statement about the Prophet in a magazine, the Bandra businessman filed a police complaint against the actor and the publication last evening.

The offence is non-bailable, say the police.

Qureshi, who is the president of the All India Jamaitul Quresh, alleged that Shah Rukh had used unparliamentary language against Prophet Mohammed, which is unacceptable for the Muslim community, in the June edition of the Time and Style magazine.

"We will not take this lying down. The issue was released on June 6, but we have received no replies from the actor or the publication so far. That is why we decided to file a complaint against the actor and the publication today," said Qureshi.

When asked whether they were waiting for an apology, Qureshi replied, "We will take the legal route now."

SRK clarifies
Shah Rukh Khan told, "Obviously, I think there is no figure in history more important than Prophet Mohammed.

Also, being a Muslim and standing up for the tenets of Islam is my most important agenda... and if they have seen my interviews, etc on TV about Islam, then the people who are objecting, should realise that what has appeared is a writing error not a thought or view that I believe in.

Prophet Mohammed is the most important positive figure in Islam... and anyone who questions my view on that, is doing it just to create a controversy."

He added, "Let the court decide what they want to do. I don't believe in violence. Khan should have withdrawn the issues from the stalls or the publication should have filed a corrigendum."

Apparently on Wednesday a mob had created a huge ruckus at Bandra police station, demanding that the police register a complaint against the actor and the publication.

According to Prakash George, senior police inspector of Bandra police station, "We have registered an FIR. We are investigating the matter and will proceed accordingly as it is a non-bailable offence."

The case was registered under section 295-A (deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religion feelings or any class by insulting its religion beliefs) and 34 (acts done by several persons with common interest) of IPC.

Bandra police sources have said they may question the actor when he returns from Los Angeles where he is currently shooting.

SRK's 'statement'
When asked, "According to you who is the most impressive figure in history?" Khan allegedly said, "There are lots of them, some negative ones like Hitler, Napoleon, Winston Churchill and if I can call it history, then Prophet Mohammed and from recent time Nelson Mandela." "And there are nice ones like Gandhiji and Mother Teresa."

SRK - Kajol cause havoc in US

It’s the onset of summer in the US of A.

And the west coast temperatures are soaring. But it’s less to do with weather conditions and more because our stars have carried our Indian summer into San Francisco already. Yeah, it’s the starry starry unit of Karan Johar’s My Name is Khan, shooting in SFO that is the cause of the dramatic change in the city temperatures.

Apparently the team is having a tough time shooting there, and our sources say that this has been one of Karan’s most challenging shoots ever. And we aren’t surprised, shooting with Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol on the streets of SFO is no mean task, given the huge population of Indians there. Besides, SRK is hugely popular among other non-Indian communities, too. While all that attention is good, it’s becoming impossible to handle the crowds and with the shoot being in ‘sync sound’, they have an almost impossible task getting it at one go without background sounds.

They have about 20 more days to go and the unit can’t wait to wrap up this gruelling shoot and head back home. Well, the bigger the stars, the tougher it gets. Who would know that better than KJo, right?

Shah Rukh Khan to try his punches on Amitabh Bachchan

According to the latest B-town buzz, Shah Rukh Khan is now gearing up to try his punches on the legendary Amitabh Bachchan. If reports are to be believed, SRK would be seen fighting it out, literally, with Big B in the movie, ‘Happy New Year’.

The film, to be directed by Farah Khah, is going to be an action-romance, which will see Shah Rukh and Amitabh in serious action sequences.

Well, till now, whenever the two superstars have come together, it’s been a very father-son kind of a sequence. But this time, the heroes will reportedly be punching each other for the upcoming venture. ‘Happy New Year’ is slated for 2010 release.

Let’s see who will tower over whom in the fist fight of Titans of Bollywood!

Hai Allah, SRK!

The King Khan of Bollywood is shooting off his mouth, losing his religion.

The Badshah of Bollywood has been out of circulation for a while. We was wondering what the scene with him is when suddenly he’s back in the news making headlines for his controversial quotes.

In a recent interview to a glossy, SRK is said to have spoken of Prophet Mohammad in poor light. We wonder if that is possible, to speak against your own faith!

According to the magazine, the superstar has compared the Prophet to the likes of maniacal leaders such as Hitler and others.

Quite likely, the interview has upset a few people in the community and this is soon going to blow up into a nation wide scandal if the superstar does not nip it in the bud.

It is as this juncture we wish SRK blogged to keep us informed. He is presently out of India shooting for KJo's film My Name is Khan.

He had just got over with Billu troubles, tu-tu-main-main with other Khan actors, and now this. Must say, he has a way of staying on top.

Shah Rukh is known to make light hearted controversial statements in his interviews, which are blown out of context.

His last joke on a television channel some months ago was "There are two kinds of Muslims. One who believe in Allah and the other who believe in Moolah." Luckily for him, no fatwa was announced.

For an actor, repeatedly pulled up for having an opinion, maybe keeping a diplomatic distance from the press at this hour, will be a very good idea.

Shah Rukh Khan had stepped in to help Jackky

Not many may be aware that it was none less than Shah Rukh Khan who recommended newcomer Jackky Bhagnani for acting. It was his referral letter to Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute that allowed the ‘Kal Kissne Dekha’ debutant to enroll himself in the school for honing up his acting skills.

Confirms Vashu Bhagnani, the proud father and producer of ‘Kal Kissne Dekha’ which hit the screens over the Friday gone by, “It was Jackky who informed me that a letter of reference was a must for an admission to Lee Strasberg. I thought of Shah Rukh Khan and he was gracious enough to oblige.”

Even though Shah Rukh Khan hasn’t actively worked with any of the films produced by Vashu Bhagnani (except for being a ’sutradhar’ in ‘Silsiilay’), he didn’t have any hesitation in putting together a letter of reference.

“That’s the beauty of this industry”, gushes Vashu, “People always stand up for you based on your relationship. It could be professional or personal but industry has always been together. There could be some stray elements here or there that may bring in some negativity but by and large, Bollywood is indeed a family. Moreover, Shah Rukh has been above all this.”

Salman's trying to befriend Shah Rukh

It seems Salman Khan doesn’t want to keep grudges against King Khan. That’s the reason he decided to appear on Shah Rukh’s best friend Farah Khan’s chat show which has been produced by SRK’s production house.

After Salman-SRK’s big fight it was even impossible to think that the duo will cross each other’s path. But we hear that Salman has shot for Farah’s chat show along with his mother. It seems Farah’s playing mediator in this. Interestingly, Farah who shares a good rapport with Salman has choreographed a song for Salman’s Main Aur Mrs Khanna .

Things had gone wrong between the two Khans during the filming of SRK’s Chalte Chalte when Aishwarya Rai was replaced as the lead actress by Rani Mukerji. Salman and SRK had hugged each and buried the hatchet at Farah Khan’s wedding. Hope Farah manages to solve the fight between these two Khans once again.

SRK’s Love For Entertainment

Sony's Entertainment Ke Liye Kuch Bhi Karega, has found a new fan in King of Entertainment, Shahrukh Khan himself..

It so happened that SRK and Farah Khan started chatting about Sony's Entertainment Ke Liye Kuch Bhi Karega at the former's place last Saturday where SRK expressed his love for the show.

According to our source, "SRK was not very discreet about his feelings. He completely bowled over Farah about how he appreciates all the contestants and their rare talents."

Our source further adds, "Shahrukh also spoke about the one act which stood out. He vividly remembered the Goan guy Wendell who amazed everyone with his fire stunts. He remembered him so well because Wendell had entertained Shahrukh and other members of Yashraj fraternity sometime in the past."

Our source further goes on to say, "SRK also mentioned that the show is a favorite of his kids and that they are completely glued to the channel when the show is on."

The show is indeed promoting unique talent all over the country. Every week viewers are encouraged to participate if they think they got what it takes. Then they are invited to perform in front of a live audience and the judges Farah and Annu Malek. The search goes on from Monday to Thursday out of which eight people are selected. All eight bag 10,000 rupees. On Friday two out of these eight are selected as finalists who then go on to compete for the grand prize of rupees 5 lakhs.

Well, we now know what it takes to please SRK and his family..

Shah Rukh Khan in Tax Trouble

King Khan might have been Bollywood’s highest advance tax payer last year. But the I-T department has not forgotten that the man still owes them money from nearly ten years ago.

The Bombay High Court on Thursday admitted an appeal, by the I-T department, challenging an order of the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal (ITAT), which had ruled in the star’s favour in June 2008.

In the first of its appeals, the I-T department seeks to claim a sum of Rs 19.43 lakh from the actor, out of a total exemption of Rs 72.67 lakh for the assessment year of 1998-1999.

“The appeals for the remainder of the amount will come up for hearing in separate cases over the next few weeks,” a source in the I-T department disclosed.

Shah Rukh had declared his total income for the financial year 1998-99 as Rs 2.01 crore, the appeal filed in the HC states. Out of this, Rs 72.67 lakh was shown as earnings from international advertising and endorsements.

The aforementioned Rs 19.43 lakh was shown in his filings of that year as advance received “towards royalty” from Jeanne Arthes Perfume for fragrances named after him.

For this, SRK had sought deductions under section 80RR of the I-T Act, by claiming it to be professional receipt from a foreign source.

Section 80RR of the Income Tax Act, 1961 covers Indian residents who earn foreign currency, and are subjected to tax deductions. This category includes professionals such as film personalities, sports persons, authors and musicians. These individuals are allowed tax deductions of 75 per cent of the income received in the form of foreign currency, provided they earn it by virtue of their profession.

In this case, however – the I-T department argues – SRK earned the sum by endorsing a brand, and not in his capacity as an actor.

The Assessment Officer studying SRK’s case had concluded that “the said receipts had not been derived from the exercise of his profession – ie, acting – but from a commercial venture in which the actor had commercially exploited his brand equity, popularity and mass appeal”.

The AO therefore restricted the deduction to 5 per cent, whereas Shah Rukh had claimed a deduction (u/s 80RR) of 75 per cent.

The star had then approached the Chief of Income Tax (CIT) against the AO’s order, which – in April, 2002 – partly allowed his appeal.

Both parties then moved to the ITAT, as they were dissatisfied with the CIT’s order.

The ITAT – in June, 2008 – had partly allowed both the appeals. The department has now filed various appeals in HC against the ITAT’s order, which partly ruled in favour of the star.

The Earnings Of A Superstar
In the year 2006-07, King Khan paid Rs 18 crore in tax. The following year – in January 2008 – he paid advance taxes of Rs 27 crore till December 15, 2007, and declared his income for 2007-08 at over Rs 100 crore.

Shahrukh Khan IIFA 2009 'Actor of the Decade'

Superstars Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Shahrukh Khan were declared the 'Actors of the Decade' at the IIFA awards here.

Aishwarya won two honorary awards for her work in Indian and international cinema while Khan was honoured for his work in popular Indian cinema, Bollywood.

The 35-year-old actress who also performed at the awards gala received both the trophies while Shahrukh had to miss the ceremony because he is shooting for his upcoming film 'My Name is Khan'.

The 43-year-old actor, who began his career with the small screen, beat Aamir Khan, Salman Khan, Akshay Kumar and Abhishek Bachchan to win the title.

Aishwarya won the 'Golden Decade' award for her memorable performances in the past ten years beating off competition from Rani Mukherjee, Preity Zinta, Kareena Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra.

While Aishwarya shot to global recognition with international projects like 'Pink Panther' and 'Provoked', Khan, too has a global following around the world being the 'Badshah of Bollywood'.

The former Miss World won the'Outstanding Achievement by Indian in International Cinema' award which was won last year by musician AR Rahman who won the 'Golden Decade of Music' award for his contribution to Indian films where music is often as important as the script and actors.

SRK's always game for audacious stunts

Farhan Akhtar says Shah Rukh Khan will be performing daring stunts in Don 2.

"He's always game for the audacious. But the health problems really frustrate him," says the director referring to the SRK's shoulder surgery this year.

But now SRK is all set to bounce back with a full-on actioner in Don 2.

And there's Priyanka Chopra for company again.

Bipasha Basu who has been eased out of Race 2 firmly believes leading ladies don't have a future in sequels.

But here's one to prove her wrong. Though Priyanka has apparently been left out of Dostana 2she's very much a part of Don 2which starts shooting, finally, in May 2010 in Ireland and Berlin.

In fact Don 2 will be the first Indian film to be shot In Dublin.

Says the producer Ritesh Sidhwani, "We're very much going ahead with the original cast Shah Rukh, Priyanka, Boman Irani, Arjun Rampal and Om Puri. Only those who died in the original won't return, obviously."

Also, for obvious reasons, this time there won't be a double role for Shah Rukh. What he will be doing is, some of the most heart-in-the-mouth stunts ever done by any leading man and certainly SRK's most audacious actioner yet.

For this Shah Rukh needs to recover from this year's back surgery.

Says a source, "This is why he allotted dates in 2009 to Karan Johar's My Name Is Khan. It requires very little physical exertion whereas Don 2 is a kick-ass role."

When the proposal to do the sequel first came up Shah Rukh was very sure it would have to go beyond the first part in terms of locales, action and drama.

Says producer Ritesh Sidhwani, "We're shooting Don 2 in Dublin .No Indian film has been shot there. We want to make sure that the sequel goes ahead of the first film. While the first part was a remake the sequel is an original script and would be much tougher to film for Shah Rukh and Farhan."

SRK: Direction is nice but lonely!

There have been a few murmers doing the rounds that Shah Rukh Khan, after having ventured into production, television and cricket has finally decided to take up direction. We all know that King Khan has directed a football sequence in Karan Johar's KABHI ALVIDA NAA KEHNA and also written the concluding 'Japan darshan' scene from Aditya Chopra's RAB NE BANA DI JODI, but is he ready to take the full time plunge into direction? Well, here is the answer from the man himself!

Says SRK, 'I don't know yet. I think it's a very lonely job. It's very nice, but am I ready to be so lonely so early? Not quite. I like the sound, the noise and the people. I want to do television, endorsements, Knight Riders and movies. I want to do so much and when there is nothing left to do, then I will direct...'

With the above statement to a reputed international source, SRK has made his stand clear!

What is Shah Rukh Khan made up of

If someone posed you a question like 'What are you made up of?' you are bound to say 'Flesh and bones'.

But if you were to ask the same to the ever-so-affable Shahrukh Khan, then, he, with all his childish like charm bundled together, will bounce off saying 'Tag Heur'. 'What are you made up of?' incidentally happens to be the catch line of the TAG Heur brand of watches, of which he is the Brand Ambassador!

Recently, the guys from TAG shot for their new global ad campaign aptly titled 'The Knights Of Time' featuring the enigmatic Shahrukh Khan, whose international counterparts for the ad, include the likes of Leonardo DiCaprio, Tiger Woods, Lewis Hamilton and Maria Sharapova! The TAG officials consider them more than just stars. According to them, these celebrities are the 'Knights of Time' and are the conquerors of the 21st Century.

The Indian campaign featuring SRK was shot by ace photographer Atul Kasbekar at Mehboob Studios in Mumbai. For the uninitiated, this is the third ad campaign that TAG has shot with SRK, the first two being in 2003 and 2006.

The recently shot ad exhibits the aura interspersed with class that SRK and TAG enjoys. And it is this class that the ad tries to showcase in a very close connection, highlighting the emotion and sophistication of the association.

Talking about his association with the ultra prestigious TAG Heur and about the latest campaign, the eternally mint-fresh SRK said, "I have said this before and I shall reiterate that when I was young, I always wanted to own a TAG Heuer watch and it is a matter of great pride for me that I am the brand ambassador of TAG Heuer for six years now.

This is my third ad campaign with TAG Heuer. This one is extremely special and different. It's very rich and intense in its look and appeal and makes me feel closer to the watch than ever before.

The attitude has never been to sell more watches. The attitude is to bring to you a different lifestyle, a lifestyle based on precision, perfection and passion."

Man! Here is truly a man who knows what he really knows the altitude of attitude, which is making us feel slightly nostalgic…Bas…itna sa khwaab hai. What say Shahrukh?

'There are no rules for good photographers. There are only good photographers'.

The aforementioned saying was quoted by one of the legendary photographers. And the person who stands true to every inch of this is none other than the ace photographer of all times Atul Kasbekar. And it is this man whose magical hands, doubled by his delightful camera lens, together have made this global dream come alive and how!

On his association with TAG and SRK, a proud Atul said that "I've worked with TAG Heuer from the time it launched in 2002 and it's like family now.

With SRK, I've worked very closely for many years now and so I know what kind of lighting works for his face and what does not. This new campaign reflects a lot of strength and aspiration and my challenge has been to adapt the international brief for India and Shah Rukh Khan."

If you rattle out the common factor that binds together Race, Dhoom 2 amongst others, what you will find is that besides the fact that these films were simply a class apart, it were costumes of these films that commanded the same amount of attention as much as the stars!

And the lady solely responsible for all this 'attention' is none other then Bollywood's very own Anaita Shroff Adajania, who also happens to be the Master-Stylist of the TAG Heur campaign.

Recalling her experience with this prestigious brand, SRK and the lovely shoot, she said "The campaign is extremely smart and elegant. There's a lovely edge which is strong and powerful, which is the character that Shah Rukh is.

We've used beautiful clothes to match the character of this campaign including clothes from Ermenegildo Zegna. There is a strong sensuality between Shah Rukh and the watch that he is wearing."

Way to go lady!

Shahrukh being sought for a public service message

The state government is seeking Shahrukh Khan for an anti-child labour campaign. But will the superstar give his nod?

Initially, Aamir Khan was approached by the government for the campaign. But because Aamir has declined the offer, the labour ministry is thinking of roping in another Khan. And who else better than Shahrukh?

The reason for Aamir’s no is that he doesn’t want to be too preachy with his various public service messages. He has already done a few public service ads for the government. And doing another one can take away the credibility of the previous ones. According to Aamir, as reported by a daily, “I didn’t want to dilute the (message in the) ads that I’ve already done by doing another one.”

Aamir has already done ad for elections and the ‘Atithi Devo Bhava’ campaign for Indian tourism. He is face of ‘Incredible India’.

Kavita Gupta, state labour secretary admits that Aamir was the perfect person to launch the campaign, but his denial has disappointed the department. Ad man Prahlad Kakkar who is set to direct the campaign, feels Aamir’s refusal may be because of creative reasons than for the cause.

Now, the ministry plans to knock at Shahrukh’s door. Let’s hope SRK agrees to do this campaign. But the superstar hasn’t said anything on this; he is not in India and is holidaying and shooting in US.

SRK to gift his bodyguard a flat

Shahrukh Khan has decided to gift his bodyguard Yaseen Khan a flat as a wedding gift. Yaseen has been staying at Shahrukh’s Mannat ever since he had started working with him. But now when he is getting married, he is finding little awkward to stay at Shahrukh's house with his newly wedded. Understanding his uneasiness, King Khan has decided to gift Yaseen a falt who hails from Karnataka.

Says a source, "Ever since he began working with SRK over a decade ago, he has been traveling with the actor wherever he goes, including his overseas shoots. But a single guy living under his roof is quite different from someone who has a wife and wants to start a family. And so,when he told SRK that he was tying the knot, it was clear to both that he'd need a new place. That's when SRK decided to present his most trusted guy a wedding gift he would remember."

Shahrukh did like him to stay nearby his house and so he will go for a flat somewhere at Bandra. Yaseen who is on a short visit to his hometown will join Shahrukh in New York where he is shooting for ‘My Name Is Khan’.

No Shah Rukh Khan in Yash Chopra’s TV venture

Reports suggesting that Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan will feature in a television series being produced by Yash Chopra have been slammed by Yash Raj Films (YRF) as false.
While YRF agrees that Chopra is planning to jump on to the soap bandwagon, reports that Shah Rukh, who had started his career with soaps like “Fauji” and “Circus”, will be acting in them are untrue.

“YRF is in negotiations with a few channels for the soap series but the news of Shah Rukh Khan acting in them is not true,” Rafiq Gangjee, YRF vice president (marketing and communication), told IANS on phone from Mumbai.

Shahrukh Khan in a soap

When the Big Daddies of Bollywood enter the small but fast growing world of Tellyland, rumours are bound to fly.

And, with Yash Chopra entering the ‘soapy’ world of television, can the Bollywood Badshah be far behind? The story is that Chopra, who shares a fantastic equation with Shah Rukh Khan, has roped in the actor to be part of one of the shows he is making. “SRK, who comes at a price, will be involving some of his leading ladies like Preity Zinta and Rani Mukerji in this show,” said a source. Meanwhile SRK, who is a producer himself, will also be making shows for another TV channel.

IIPM ties up with Shah Rukh Khan

Shah Rukh Khan is all set to quiz some more.

But this time around, it is not the aspiring crorepatis of the country who will face his rapidfire questions, but students of a B-school. Yes, Indian Institute of Planning and Management (IIPM) has roped in SRK to host their annual business and marketing quiz, not just for this time, but for the next three years.

To be held in association with Planman Media’s magazine, 4Ps Business and Marketing, the idea is to make this India’s premiere B-school quizzing event. Well, quizzes sure are big on the annual festival list of every business school, but IIPM wants it to be an important annual calendar event in the B-school fest circuit, by not only having SRK host it, but also by making sure that a huge number of international B-schools participate in this quiz. IIPM already boasts of a faculty from various Ivy League colleges from across the world.

Says Arindam Chaudhuri, Dean, IIPM, “The idea is to bring world-class elements in terms of education and the campus life of the students. At IIPM, we have laptops and WiFi campuses for all students, leading faculty from Ivy League B-Schools. We take all our students abroad for study tours in partnership with top B-Schools like Haas, Darden, Judge or McComb. And even this year, IIPM has already placed more than 2200 students in India and 45 students abroad!”

But why Shah Rukh? “Who else in India can make an event global by his sheer global popularity than Shah Rukh? He is perceived as the face of intelligent Bollywood because of his ‘Economics’ education background, his suave marketing skills and sharp intelligence. He is obviously the natural choice,” says Arindam. The finale of the quiz show, which will also be a part of the annual IIPM B-school fest – Amaze — will be held in Delhi — at the IIPM campus in Satbari. When asked, SRK was his usual staccato short self, “I am coming to IIPM and it will be nice to be there.”
