Karan loses sleep over My Name Is Khan

Karan Johar, who was at a radio station promoting his next production Wake Up Sid, claimed he was losing sleep over My Name Is Khan.

"A lot has been happening on the front. We are busy shooting but I am so worked up that I can't sleep properly these days," he said.

Though in a positive mood, he is still bruised about the Shah Rukh Khan-US airport detention episode and the fact that the media is claiming it was a publicity stunt for this film.

"My Name Is Khan is a simple, honest film and we don't need any such strategy to promote it," he said.

For Wake Up Sid, he said, "It is not a film but an emotion that we have all been through. Sid is simply at crossroads in life and undecided about what to do, where to go. And we have all been there."

KJO to pair up SRK-Katrina?

SRK and KatrinaFilmmaker Karan Johar has hinted signing on Shah Rukh Khan and Katrina Kaif for his next movie.

The director was quoted by a news channel saying that Shah Rukh Khan and Katrina Kaif are the most romantic actors in Bollywood. When he was further asked whether he would like to pair them up, the filmmaker didn't weed out the possibility.

Katrina Kaif and Shah Rukh Khan are also said to be working together in a Yash Chopra movie. If this happens, it might as well be the end of cold war between Sallu and SRK. Salman is already throwing hints regarding the patch-up.

He praised King Khan on his show Dus Ka Dum, saying he has high regards for the actor professionally. Also, Salman said in an interview once that he won't have any problem if Katrina works with Shah Rukh.Well, we also want your war to be a history Khans!

Shah Rukh will always be my idol: Priyanka Chopra

Priyanka Chopra has thousands of fans, but who is the actress's all-time idol? The man she admires most is adored by millions across the globe as well... who else but superstar Shah Rukh Khan.

'Shah Rukh Khan is my idol and has always been. He has been a favourite actor of course, but I really look up to him also as a person . Looking at where he came from and how he became who he is today, I find it extremely fascinating,' Priyanka told IANS in an interview.

King Khan likes to hit it straight and simple

He says he hates wearing suits and ties, maths kills him and business is just too much work. But actor-entrepreneur Shah Rukh Khan has not done too badly for himself as an entertainer-businessman either. His business, Red Chillies, has grown from a small seven-heads mom-and-pop show to a production house that has diversified into every aspect of the entertainment business, from films to TV commercials, telly serials to special effects studio. And with the Kolkata Knight Riders, he has forayed into what he says will be the next big thing for India. “Typically, developing countries move from roti, kapda, makaan to entertainment and finally, sports... India is no longer developing and we are on the threshold of moving from entertainment to sports,” he says. “And I want to be there and be a part of it.”

In business as in entertainment, King Khan’s mantra is pretty much the same: Keep it basic and simple. That’s part of the reason why brand SRK has been so successful for so long. “I stand for entertainment,” he says. “Brand building stands for the basic truth your grandma told you... work hard, be simple, keep it simple, have fun and make the organisation feel it was value for money.”

That mantra extends to his business as well. For Khan, the business bottomline is simple: You can’t lose money with the king. “My first rule of business is I have to make sure you gain from the business,” he says. “When people say big star, King Khan etc, it’s a big burden... and I am like God. Now if they work with me and lose, it really sucks... you can’t lose with the king, can you?”

That positioning is backed by some smart marketing and even smarter PR. Tongue firmly in cheek, Khan says he’s not really as smart as people think he is. ”You become smart when you’re in trouble.” That’s what made him rope in some of the brands he endorses into films he makes like Om Shanti Om and the IPL team he owns. “I believed in IPL. It’s a great idea,” he says. “I explained the big picture to friends like Nokia and they came on board. I said no matter how well or badly my team plays, this is a winning idea.”

Of course, he’s very clear that it doesn’t pay to be a stand-up comedian for two people. “The first rule of entertainment is mass communication. You just have to get enough people in the room,” he says. That’s where marketing comes in — something that he has mastered with hits like Om Shanti Om. “You gotta market the film according to its nature to make it work,” he says. So, retro OSO was over the top and Chak De more subdued.

That marketer mantra helped sell KKR even though for both seasons it ended up at the bottom of the pile. The Knight Riders did not win too many games, but the team did not lose any money, breaking even and making profits from day one. “Yes, I read in The Economic Times that KKR is making money,” he says. “It’s like you make a flop film and you make money. It doesn’t make me happy. We made some bad decisions.... sports decisions. But I am gonna win this on the field. I won’t sell the team. This is the last year when we have a chance and we have to win. My children get depressed when we lose. If I hadn’t hurt myself, I’d start playing. I’d be a better coach, maybe. I’d give my Chak De speech. It would have worked... it worked with the girls.”

As a sportsman, he may be hurting that his team isn’t top of the IPL heap, but Khan is smart enough to realise that his business is all about Brand SRK. That’s the way of the entertainment world. “The entertainment business is all about personalities. You call it brand, I call it personality. In that way, it’s different from other products. Whether it’s Walt Disney, James Cameron, Quintin Tarantino... they have a personality and their films are an extension of that and that’s enter-tainment for people like me.” That’s probably why the old Red Chillies corner room also has King Khan written on the door. “It’s the king’s company, after all,” he jokes.

Building that brand in Bollywood may be his forte, but Khan isn’t a hands-on CEO. “I don’t need to run this company,” he says. “I don’t like cracking deals, power lunches, flying jetliners. I don’t sit on contracts... I am just the ideas guy.”

As Red Chillies grows from a 100-member team to 1,000 with a new office, “doing much better”, SRK sees himself more as the ideas per-son. “Red Chillies will have CEOs, COOs, CFOs, UFOs, FOs,” he jokes. “I hope they’ll give me a small room and say you’re the ideas guy... just do the ideas thing.”

For all his ideas spiel, what makes Khan, the CEO, tick is his paranoia. “It’s nice to travel first class, but I should be able to afford the tickets first,” he says. “So I work, work, work. I don’t count chickens or eggs. Maybe that’s why I am successful.” At Red Chillies too is work-round-the-clock. “Most of the businesses aren’t hugely profitable, but we break even. We keep things cheap and fast. But beyond breaking even and making profits, we have great fun doing it,” he says.

Shah Rukh Khan: 'I want to wear tights'

Shah Rukh Khan has decided to follow up My Name is Khan with the superhero movie Ra. 1.

The Bollywood veteran had to choose between Farah Khan's Happy New Year and the action film, which will be directed by Cash's Anubhav Sinha.

Khan and Farah worked together on box office hits such as Om Shani Om and Maine Hoon Haa, but the actor opted for Ra. 1 to impress his children.

He told New Kerala: "I want to put on my tights and my kids' blanket on my back. I want to do this film for my children.

"I’ve always wanted to make a superhero film, but I never had six-pack abs. Now that I have them, I want to do this. It’s not an animation film, as many people believe - I would like to clarify that. It’s a live-action film."

According to a source, the actor has already started exercising intensively for the role.

Nobody can do it better than SRK, says Salman Khan

For the first time after their public falling-out last year, Salman Khan has praised Shah Rukh Khan. The accolades were for SRK's professionalism and his intense performances in romantic roles.

Salman had walked out of friend Katrina Kaif's birthday party on July 16, 2008, after a spat with Shah Rukh. The actors have not been on the best of terms since then.

But in the yet-to-be-aired episode of his reality show 10 Ka Dum, Salman heaped praise on the other Khan. The episode features Riteish Deshmukh and Govinda, who were promoting their film Do Knot Disturb.

Salman asked Riteish, who is known for his mimicking talent, to imitate someone, a source working on the sets of the show told DNA. After Riteish mimicked Shah Rukh, Salman complimented him and said: "When it comes to romantic scenes, Shah Rukh is outstanding. Nobody can do it better than Shah Rukh Khan. He has the intensity in his eyes and is utterly romantic."

Salman went on: "Professionally, Shah Rukh is simply great." DNA has a copy of the taped transcript of Salman's comments.

The source said that Salman knew that Riteish's favourite scene was from Shah Rukh's Dil Toh Paagal Hai, but he still asked him to imitate it.

Anita Basu, the producer of 10 Ka Dum, said: "Salman has been very gracious in his compliments about Shah Rukh. No snide remark was passed. Salman is a thorough professional who likes SRK's work and he acknowledged it when people asked his about SRK."

But an industry insider said just because Salman has complimented SRK's professionalism does not mean "they are best friends". "That cannot happen quickly as they have drifted apart. But never say never -- we have seen many professional rivalries wash away with time. As of now, let us wait and watch," he said.

SRK, Kajol back in Fashion

Bollywood’s golden couple that sets the screen on fire, a couple who brings smile on millions of people and raise their heart beats, and a couple who's always in fashion...king of khan’s Shah Rukh Khan and beauty queen Kajol.

The chemistry of the Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge couple is back and they personify the power of two. No other couple could have been more perfect for appearing on the second anniversary cover of Vogue magazine in India.

King Khan said it is a 'relief' that he was finally picked to be on the cover of Vogue. He told that, "I'm very excited I'm the Vogue cover. My wife was on the Vogue cover when it started off, and that's something everyone in the house teases me about that I have not made it to a cover that my wife did. So this is my claim to fame and optimistically now I'll be looked up in my house."

Despite the different camera, Kajol too had a good time, she said, "I expected it to be a lot tougher than it actually was, but everybody really convention together and made us look fashionable, so we didn't have to try too hard."

It definitely is a cast coup- in more ways than one, because however it is hard to believe this, neither of the two fit comfortably into their modeling shoes. They both insist that the differences between the still and moving camera are manifold and needless to say, in front of the movie camera, they are nothing short of perfect.

And a modest SRK said the reason he doesn't do too many cover shoots is simply because, "he's not good at it."

Both swear the differences between still and moving camera are manifold, so do they have a few fallback faces when faced with a lens they do not love?

Says SRK, "We are not the best people to be posing, we don't pout, we don't know how to smile, we don't know which side to look. We do silly things, we laugh, we joke, and we kept looking in the wrong direction."

And what makes them the hottest couple? Well they are hardly in the mood to deliberate on that. Kajol said, "We have done so many films together that have done well, and they happen to be love stories...I think it is great. I don't understand it myself so I can't explain it."

There are still many months left for the release of My Name is Khan, their comeback movie as a couple, and till then, this will have to do for the fans.

SRK-Kajol: Sizzling chemistry

SRK-Kajol are on the cover of the October issue of Vogue India. The My Name Is Khan couple were shot by Atul Kasbekar and interviewed by Karan Johar.

Here's an excerpt from what the B-Town's sizzling on-screen jodi have said...

Kajol on her chemistry with Shah Rukh: I deeply respect him. He is a great human being, he has taught me a lot as an actor and a person.

When I look back to the things he has said to me, he was right in a lot of ways.

SRK on his chemistry with Kajol: I think we are comfortable in our own skin. We have never tried to outdo each other.

Some things work well in pairs earrings, shoes, socks, pyjamas. I think we know that our individual scenes in a film are fantastic, but together we are unbeatable.

She's honest, earnest, innocent, very loud, very scattered and very beautiful all that I'm not. I'm boring, not natural, I'm a workaholic, I don't love people unconditionally like she does.

Shahrukh Khan funds solar electricity projects for seven villages in Orissa

Bollywood actor Shahrukh Khan is being hailed as a hero in the villages of Orissa after he helped light up thousands of houses across seven villages by funding a solar electricity project.

Shahrukh funded rural electrification project in Ahriajpur, Banhipal, Okilapala, Palachua, Rangani, Denlasahi and Gupti villages, which uses solar energy that was implemented by The Energy and Research Institute (TERI).

For the villagers in Okilapala, Shahrukh has come as messiah as his funding helped these people to see the light of the day after 61 years of the country’s independence.

“All the 270 families in our village cannot forget Shahrukh Khan’s help. The contribution of this great man is incomparable. He has helped us very much. We were living in bad condition, without any light, he provided us with solar lights and villagers have to pay just Rs. 3 to get the light. We are getting the light at very cheap rates,” said, Tulsi Das, a villager.

The villagers have also been provided with solar lamps for which they have to pay a fee of Rs. 3, while a recharging station has been set up in the village and solar panels have also been installed to enable the villagers to charge their lamps everyday.

“Now we have no problems. Though we have to pay Rs. 3 for night, we are getting many benefits. Our children can study now, women can work properly. Earlier, there used to be many problems while using kerosene lamps, but now we avail many benefits. We have got lights from Shahrukh Khan. We had no idea about him, but now we have come to know about him,” said Kalindi Nayak, another villager.

Video: SRK turns designer

It looks like there could be a new addition to King Khan's resume. After being a superstar, producing megahits and owning an IPL team, he now wants to try his hand at designing clothes.

SRK to design for KJO

It seems there could be an addition to King Khan's resume. Being a superstar, producing megahits and owning an IPL team is clearly not enough to keep Shah Rukh Khan occupied. The Bollywood Badshah now wants to be a designer as well.

Vogue magazine's second anniversary issue celebrates the power of two with Shah Rukh and his ultimate leading lady Kajol. But there is another element to this power pair. And that is the director of their forthcoming film, their good friend, their interviewer and, evidently, their style guru as well - Karan Johar - who admits, "It's undoubtedly me; out of the three of us, I definitely take the style crown."

We're not arguing the point. But even if Karan's got his couture down pat, Shah Rukh is not letting that dampen his own aspirations as a budding designer.

"I will be designing an outfit for Karan, which he will wear for his show. I think he makes me look very dandified and I want him to look a little more relaxed. So me and Shiraz, who sometimes designs for me, are putting together an outfit for him," says Shah Rukh.

And what does Karan, who will make his own debut as a fashion designer at the forthcoming Couture Week, make of this? "Shah Rukh doesn't like my clothes. So he said he would wear my clothes only if I walked in his!" admits the young filmmaker.

Well that's trade off we're only too happy to accept.

And if you're wondering when you can get your hands on the King Khan collection, it may take a while coming.

"Just in case you don't like what you see, it's because Karan is a bad model, and not because the clothes are bad," insists Shah Rukh.

The good news is that modelling is just another one of KJo's many skills. So if he pulls this one off, the King Khan line could be just a fashion rack away!

Rains stop Khan

The downpour in the city yesterday forced Karan Johar to cancel the day's shoot of My Name Is Khan. The director has put up an elaborate set at Film City for the last schedule of the film.

KJO on a social networking site says, "Shooting held up because of sudden rain and thunder. Waiting for it to stop!"

SRK to marry Rituparna!

King Khan & Tolly queen play man and wife in ad film

This Mahasaptami, Shah Rukh Khan will be married to Rituparna Sengupta.

Before you go into shock (or awe), let us set things straight. Bollywood’s Hero No. 1 and Tollywood’s Heroine No. 1 will play husband and wife for a product promotion to be shot in Mumbai’s Filmcity on Friday.

SRK will play a common man and Rituparna his homemaker wife. And the (Ayurvedic) magic potion that keeps them together? Chyawanprash, from the stable of Calcutta-based Emami Group.

“Both of them are our brand ambassadors, and so we thought pairing them would be the perfect marriage for the brand,” said Emami director Aditya Agarwal. “Shah Rukh will provide the national connect while Rituparna will provide the regional connect.”

The superstar with more than a national connect is learnt to be happy at the prospect of working with the regional rage, continuing his long tradition of romancing Bengali beauties on screen, from Kajol to Rani.

“Shah Rukh has seen Rituparna’s work in Main Meri Patni Aur Woh and also remembers her coming to Eden Gardens to support his Kolkata Knight Riders team in the first IPL season,” said a source. “He okayed the concept of the commercial at one go.”

Rituparna, too, did not waste time before saying ‘I do’.

“I am very excited but I am very nervous too,” she admitted. “I will be shooting with the Shah Rukh Khan. I am a huge fan of his.... Plus, I have recently done a film titled SRK with Vinay Pathak. And now, I will be shooting with SRK himself!”

Rituparna, who will be going to Mumbai on Tuesday for a pre-shoot session, is now busy juggling Bolly and Tolly, with shooting on for Priyadarshan’s untitled film co-starring Akshaye Khanna, Ajay Devgan and Bipasha Basu.

Shah Rukh is dividing his work time between the last schedule of Karan Johar’s My Name is Khan and shooting lots of advertisements as part of his brand commitments.

The Chyawanprash ad film will be directed by Ram Madhvani of Equinox Films, who shot the Bheja kum song in Taare Zameen Par, and is also slated to direct Amitabh Bachchan in the forthcoming Vidhu Vinod Chopra production Taalismaan.

“I have seen her in a couple of Bengali films apart from Main Meri Patni Aur Woh,” said Madhvani.

“I think she is just fantastic and I am really looking forward to working with her for the first time. I have worked with Shah Rukh before and the two of them would make an unusual but good pairing,” he added, from Mumbai.

The SRK-RS commercial will go on air from end-October. Star Bollywood photographer Dabboo Ratnani will shoot the stills.

Shah Rukh Khan gears up for an action-packed 2010

Shah Rukh Khan's fans have seen little of the actor in 2009. After his Rab Ne Bana De Jodi released in the December of 2008, the actor has been in the news for his Indian Premier League team, Kolkata Knight Riders and its controversies and his US trip where he was questioned at length by the airport security authorities on India's Independence Day. But the Badshah promises to change everything in 2010 as he gears up for an action packed year.

The year will begin with the release of Karan Johar's My Name is Khan. In March SRK will get into the boots of a league owner and guide his team, KKR in the third edition of IPL. All of March and April, the actor will devote to his cricket team and ensure that his team puts up a better fight this year.

Shah Rukh will also start shooting for Farah Khan's next film. The choreographer turned director is currently scripting her film and should be ready to roll by the end of the first quarter of the year. Come August, King Khan will gear up for Don. The sequel will be once again directed by Farhan Akhtar and has a long European schedule. Shooting for the film will be in the locales of London, Dublin and Frankfurt with a short schedule in Berlin. Also on the pipeline is Anubhav Sinha's Ra 1 and another film with a debutant director.

Shah Rukh had to take it easy for some time as he was recuperating from a shoulder operation after he hurt himself shooting for Viveck Vaswani's Dulha Mil Gaya. However, before the year ends, this film will release and audiences can get to see SRK in an extended special appearance for this film.

As they say there is always a lull before the storm and one can expect to see SRK in full action mode in 2010.

Shah Rukh too is like Salman, after all

If you think Salman was the only one doing charity, think again! Apparently his friend-turned-foe Shah Rukh Khan too has a heart of gold. The King Khan has been doing a lot of charitable work since a long time. But apparently he doesn't like talking about it. But hey, trust Juicy Mausi to find it all out for you!

It so happened that I bumped into a set of parents at a college gathering recently. And guess what they had to tell me, Apparently, SRK sponsors underprivileged students on a regular basis. He buys books and arranges tuition fees for students whose parents are to poor to do the same.

Well, the news surely got me thinking. So I did a little snoopin' around. A little birdie then told me that apparently, the King Khan also donates huge sums of money to the children's cancer ward in Nanavati Hospital. Khan's parents had breathed their last in the hospital and he has a special attachment to it. Apparently, Khan even dreams of building an advanced hospital in Mumbai.

Salman became SRK!

What would you do if someone fumble and forgets your name and spontaneously calls you by your ace rival’s name? Make it a joke. That’s exactly what salman did recently when such an awkward situation when a doc calls him SRK.

Salman was attending a blood donation camp at the Tata Memorial Cancer Hospital, Parel, Mumbai to promote his upcoming film Wanted.

Probably the doctors were so dazed at having Salman among them that they called him SRK while introducing him to the patient.

The doctor arranged the for the actor to interact with the patients and while they called him in, they referred his with the correct name but while going on gag a over him, they used Shah Rukh Khan to refer to him.

Salman took it in his stride as the patients started laughing, he said “Achcha hai yeh doctor hai” (good he is a doctor).

He added “Wait karo, Shahrukh Khan aa raha hai.” (Wait Shahrukh Khan is coming).

Well, we don’t know about SRK but Sallu must have had a running high temperature in his head.

Shahrukh gave me cricket tips: Rani

It was a happy coincidence for Rani Mukherjee to see Shahrukh Khan and Aamir Khan, two people very close to her, visit the sets of her movie Dil Bole Hadippa on the very first day of the shooting in Yashraj Studios. Coincidentally, SRK was shooting for his film Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi while Aamir was shooting an advertisement at the same studio.

When the word spread that Rani was dressed as a man to shoot a song titled ‘Bhangra Bistar’ with Rakhi Sawant, the two Khans couldn’t resist visiting the sets of ‘Dil Bole Hadippa’ and see Rani for themselves.

“It was really sweet because Aamir and SRK are two very special people in my life and I see their presence on the set on the first day of the shoot as a happy coincidence,” Rani told a news agency.

The two stars not just watched the shoot, but gave tips to Rani. Aamir, for instance, told her how to put on a fake moustache.

“Aamir helped me with the moustache... I was shooting a song with Rakhi before I had the moustache on and he gave me tips on how I should put it with a little smile so that it doesn't hurt,” Rani said.

But the most valuable tips came from SRK, who guided Rani on how to wield a cricket bat and showed her some batting moves. In the movie, Rani plays a cricket-crazy Punjabi girl who disguises herself as a boy to play cricket in an all-boys’ team.

“Shah Rukh gave me a lot of tips on cricket and I was very happy to have him give me tips for my character in the movie,” said Rani.

Rani has worked with SRK in a number of films. She was last seen with him in Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna. On the other hand, Rani has worked with Aamir in Ghulam and Rising: Ballad of Mangal Pandey, The.

‘Dil Bole Hadippa’ releases this Friday. Rani and her co-star Shahid Kapoor have been promoting the film in various cities. The actress also flew to Toronto for the special world premiere of the film at the Toronto International Film Festival.

Shahrukh Khan buys Tata Sky

Bollywood superstars Shahrukh Khan and Aamir Khan must be having hard time dealing with the endless 'rivalry gossip' by the media. Just on the heels of the report that Aamir is not moved by the recent Shahrukh's detention at an Airport in US, anothernewson them has hit the headlines.

The grapevine is abuzz with thenewsthat Shahrukh has bought a product endorsed by Aamir and not the product he endorses. To be precise, Shahrukh is said to have installed a huge Tata Sky satellite antennae atop his multi-storey office-cum-leisure space in the extension behind Mannat. Coincidentally, it is a rival product to DishTV DTH he endorses. Adding more salt to the wounds, Aamir is the brand ambassador of Tata Sky.

Shahrukh, who has recently renewed contract with ZEE DishTV as its brand ambassador, is going to face embarrassment if the news turns out true.

It's Shahrukh Khan Vs Akshay Kumar

Bollywood is gearing up for the clash of the titans. But this time it would not be on the screen or in any award function but on the small screen. The entire tinsel town is abuzz with the Dance Premier League mania with Kareena Kapoor, Bipasha Basu, Salman Khan, Arshad Warsi and Sohail Khan having already confirmed their association with the show and having picked up their respective teams.

The latest buzz is that there is merely one slot up for grabs and both Shahrukh Khan and Akshay Kumar are eyeing it. The two stars who are seen as big rivals at the Box Office don’t want to miss this golden opportunity of being a part of the show. Dance Premier League would offer them a solid platform for promoting their films. There are also rumours that Salman is trying to settle his scores with Shahrukh by trying to get Akshay on-board. It remains to be seen who grabs the team and who bites the dust in this.

'Idiot' Aamir snubs Shahrukh again

Aamir made a dig at Shah Rukh at the Mumbai airport on Sunday by slyly hinting that the latter's detention at the US airport was a people thought that the war between the two superstars, Aamir Khan and Shah Rukh Khan, was over after they came together on a common platform for the multiplex issue.

But it's never as simple as that. On Sunday night, Aamir Khan made another dig at Shah Rukh when he returned to Mumbai after vacationing in France.

An eye witness present at the international airport says, "When Aamir walked in late on Sunday night, he was approached for an interview by a TV reporter. Since Aamir had returned from France, the reporter wanted to know whether, he too, like SRK, was stopped at international airports and interrogated for being a Khan. That's when Aamir retorted that such checks are a routine matter. He also added tongue-in-cheek that, 'No one checks me as I am an idiot', obviously referring to his forthcoming film, 3 Idiots. Then he went on to add that SRK had a problem as he is very intelligent. Aamir's obvious reference means that the fuss created by SRK about being stopped at the airports was a mere publicity stunt. Now it remains to be seen when SRK will respond."

This war of words has been raging for long between the two stars, with Shah Rukh and Aamir regularly taking potshots at each other. However, when the film industry got together for the multiplex issue, the two Khans forgetting their differences, came together on the same platform to express their solidarity. But now, again, Aamir's dig at SRK has set tongues wagging in the film industry about the so-called bonhomie between the two superstars.

Incidentally, Salman Khan had also made similar comments about SRK on the same issue by saying that everyone has to go through these routine security checks at international airports, so what's the big deal?

My Name is Khan 'a tiring experience'

Shahrukh Khan's upcoming film 'My name is Khan' may well be worth a hundred crores, but according to director Karan Johar it was a torturous experience shooting it.
According to KJo, SRK tried his hand at 'method acting' to prepare for the role and even during filming; the actor remained in character even off screen.

Shahrukh became Rizwan Khan through and through, "It has taken its toll on me and Shah Rukh. It's true Shah Rukh remained in character as Rizwan Khan even at home. At home in his body language he's always Rizwan. I see him doing it all the time. I don't think he has got out of it. Even when he's with his children at home." KJo said.

So how did Karan Johar go about researching autism for the character of Rizwan Khan? "Shibani and I met the couple. They were gracious enough to meet us in London. And that couple's relationship became the basis of Rizwan and Mandira's relationsip in 'My Name Is Khan.' At its core level this film is a love story," he said.
"My writer Shibani Bhatija researched extensively on various aspects of an autistic disorder and contacted the various National Autistic Centres.

Shibani and I personally met a lot of autistic people, took notes went to U-Tube. Then Shah Shah Rukh did his own research." he added. He also said that the strenuous shoot has sapped him of all his strength and that he would kike to day a few weeks off. "I need to go away for a month. I don't think it will happen. But no harm in dreaming." he said.

However, KJo vehemently denies claims of 'My name is Khan' resembling the likes of such films as Forest Gump. "It's not Tom Hanks in 'Forrest Gump' at all. That was a totally different strain of autism. It's nearer to Dustin Hoffman in 'Rain Man', though still very different. It's what we call high-functional autism. You can have a regular life, be married, have children. But the syndrome does convey a fair amount of quirks and eccentricities. But his character is not essentially neuro-typical. The film has made me understand human behaviour and how to be compassionate and humane."

Watch out Shahrukh!

The battleground has shifted from the silver screen to the runway as the infamous animosity between two giants of Bollywood, Shahrukh Khan and Salman Khan takes on a new twist.

It has been reported that Shahrukh’s best friend, Karan Johar (who is also a designer,) plans to launch his clothesline with SRK as the showstopper. The only other model walking the ramp will be SRK’s other half, Gauri Khan with all of this happening at an upcoming Couture Week.

Well now, according to sources, Salman who is quite active with his ‘Being Human’ organization also has a plan to launch the ‘Being Human’ collection at the same Couture Week, with the help of his designer sister Alvira Agnihotri. So, if SRK can be a showstopper then why not Sallu and you ain’t getting anything for guessing it right, it's Katrina Kaif, his ladylove who will sashay down the ramp in the ‘Being Human’ collection.

It’s time for ramp wars!

Shah Rukh Khan lights up seven Orissa villages

Remember the Shah Rukh Khan-starrer Swades, where lead protagonist Mohan Bhargava, an NRI working in NASA, returns to his former nanny's village in India and resolves the irregular electricity problem by setting up a hydro power plant. In a case of real life imitating reel life, Khan has lighted up seven remote coastal villages in Orissa by funding a solar electricity project.

The effort has dramatically changed the lives of the people of Ahriajpur, Banhipal, Okilapala, Palachua, Rangani, Denlasahi and Gupti villages in Kendrapara district, about 150 km from here. Each village has a population of 500 people and most of them fall in the below poverty line bracket. They mostly depend on fishing and agriculture for their livelihood. For the villagers, Khan is a messiah.

The rural electrification project used solar energy to produce electricity. Khan funded the project under the NDTV's Greenathon initiative titled 'Light a Billion Lives'. The project was implemented by The Energy & Research Institute (TERI).

Local coordinator of the project Biraja Prasad Pati said, "Can you imagine even after 61 years of Independence, they did not have electricity. But the project changed their lives.

Once dusk sets in, they all rush back to their houses and savour the pleasure of having electricity at home. Can you imagine even after 61 years of Independence, they did not have electricity," he said. Earlier, kerosene lanterns were the only source of light.

Now, the villagers have been provided with solar lanterns. "Life now starts after sun set," Pati said, adding that villagers had taken the cost-effective solar lanterns after paying the users' fees of Rs3 towards charging. But occasional users pay Rs5 by way of charging fees.

A recharging station has been installed in each village. Solar panels have also been set on rooftops to allow villagers to charge their lanterns every morning. "Now people are happy and know more about Khan," said local ward member Tapas Mandal.Ironically, the state government is clueless about the project.

Now, another news is doing the rounds that the Oscar winning director is keen on roping in Shahrukh too.

It seems Danny can't have enough of Mumbai city. Like Slumdog Millionaire , Bombay Velvet is also based on the city. It is a film based on real life incidents and Anurag Kashyap will direct it.

The new film is said to have three parts with a new comer playing the lead in the second part while Aamir Khan takes over in the third part. It is said that Danny is looking forward to sign Shahrukh for the lead role in the first part.

Let's wait and watch if Danny will succeed in casting the two Khans together!

For Orissa villagers Shah Rukh is a hero, not just a star

Laxmi Mondal of Banhipal village in Orissa’s Kendrapara district has never watched any of Shah Rukh Khan’s movies, as the village has been without electricity all these years. But for this poor village woman the Bollywood actor has turned into a real life hero by lighting up their lives.

Shah Rukh has funded a solar power harnessing project which provides light to the village after sunset.

“There is no electricity in our village and we don’t expect it to be provided by the government in the near future. So the electric lanterns have become very handy for us. Though we used kerosene lanterns earlier, they couldn’t be relied upon due to the brisk breeze throughout the day as our village is just a few kilometres away from the Bay of Bengal,” said Mondal.

Banhipal is not the only village which is a beneficiary of Shah Rukh’s largesse. There are six other villages - Ahirajpur, Okilapala, Palachua, Rangani, Denlasahi and Gupti in Kendrapara district which have benefited from this solar harnessing project which has been fully funded by Shah Rukh Khan.

The project is part of the Greenathon initiative of NDTV called ‘Lighting Billon Lives’. Technical assistance has been provided by The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI).

Each village has been provided with about 50 solar lanterns with a single charging point. The lanterns are charged every morning through solar panels set on rooftops.

The charging of lanterns, distribution and collection of money are mainly manned by women members of the village.

Though Shah Rukh has borne the installation cost, the maintenance cost is taken care of by the villagers themselves.

“We have a corpus to meet the running expenses of these lanterns. We raise the corpus by charging just Rs.2.50 from every villager. We charge extra if one takes the lanterns for use during festivals and special occasions. And if a person from a neighbouring village takes it then he is charged Rs.10 per night,” said Biraja Prasad Pati, of Nature Club, a local NGO which implemented the project.

These villages are primarily small clusters of Bengali-speaking people. The villagers use these lanterns not only to light their homes but also for other purposes.

“We use these lanterns for different purposes. Our men take these lanterns to scare away wild boars during night as they often destroy our standing paddy. The fishermen take these lanterns for fishing during night and our children study with these lanterns,” said Urmila Modal, from Okilapala village, adding that they often give these lanterns free of cost to meritorious students of the village.

Apart from these seven villages, Shah Rukh’s generosity has helped in bringing light to two other villages - Jadapala and Tarajodi in Mayurbhanj district of the state.

Shah Rukh, an honorary professor now

After getting an honorary doctorate, Shah Rukh Khan might soon be on his way to being an honorary professor too!

Routes to Roots, the NGO that got him the honorary doctor's degree in arts and culture from Britain's University of Bedfordshire, is now planning to get the actor a professorship from the Coventry University in UK.

The secretary of Routes to Roots, Rakesh Gupta, confirming that this honour will be conferred upon SRK "very soon", said, "Shah Rukh has done a lot for charity and helping people out. There are some villages in Rajasthan, Orissa, etc., which have got electricity because of SRK. People in these villages don't even know SRK, because they don't see many movies. Secondly, the electrification of the village is by alternative sources of energy. So, while it's good for the human beings, it's also good for nature."

Shah Rukh salutes his make-up dada

Shah Rukh Khan knows how to show respect to his elders and he didn't shy away from showing that at a public platform.

He was invited as a guest along with other celebrities such as Jaya Bachchan and Juhi Chawla to attend a function to award the film industry's noted technicians.

Shah Rukh gave an award to his make- up man, Ravi dada.

In his speech, SRK spoke very fondly of Ravi.

"He is a father figure to me. He was the first makeup man I ever had. I had borrowed him from Hema ji (Malini) and I told him to make me as pretty as her. Later, he stayed with me, but couldn't make me pretty," he quipped.

He showed respect for his make-up man, who has been with him through his long Bollywood journey, by touching his feet on stage. Ravi couldn't hold back his tears.

Shah Rukh is Mr Wrinkled!

What is wet, a wee-bit-wrinkled and a superstar? Not ‘Jumbo’ like we all thought; but our very own Shah Rukh Khan.

Yes, he was wet and wrinkled? How? We blame Karan Johar for that. At a set put up in Film City for My Name Is Khan, SRK was required to stay in neck-deep water for two days — in and out — and you know how the skin becomes when you’ve stayed in water for too long.

A li’l bit wrinkly. But SRK didn’t complain one bit. In fact, he was soon being called Mr Mermaid (in whispers, of course) around the sets. And even if he heard, he couldn’t get madder than a ‘wet’ hen (pun unintended); so, he laughed along with the unit at his watery get-up. Now thank God it wasn’t ‘hot’ water he was in. Poor SRK, always seems to get into trouble for no fault of his own — is the media listening here? Tsk, Tsk!

King Khan and Kendrapara village

Kendrapara (Orissa), They neither had the opportunity to catch a glimpse of his blockbusters nor the popular TV shows anchored by the superstar, yet Shah Rukh Khan has a large fan following in a remote village here.

Reason: the remote village now has light after daybreak, courtesy the generosity of the King Khan.

Ahirajpur village under Rajnagar tehsil lays its claim to fame for the fact that it has come under solar energy harnessing project funded by Shah Rukh.

But for SRK's contribution, Ahirajpur would have still remained shrouded in darkness.

Shah Rukh had fully funded the project and The Energy & Research Institute (TERI) implemented the solar energy harnessing project as part of NDTV's Greenathon initiative titled Light a Billion Lives, said the project's local coordinator Biraja Prasad Pati.

It's a sort of dream come true for residents of this perennially backward village.

Shah Rukh shoots for My Name Is Khan in a flooded trench

A seven-day schedule of My Name Is Khan kicked off at Film City in Mumbai last week. Shah Rukh Khan shot amidst three feet deep water, some of it even being rain water, in a trench for a flood sequence. Screen (June 19-25) was the first to report that the actor will be shooting a flood sequence for the film with a 135 x 240 metres wide and three-feet deep trench being dug at a ground in Film City.

Cameras were also placed underwater to capture scenes in and around a church submerged in the water. While the unit had planned artificial rain to depict heavy rains and subsequent floods, the natural rain during the week only helped them further, according to a source from the unit. The source added that work on set construction was running slow and the schedule was unlikely to take-off this month.

However, with Dharma Productions not wanting to delay the shoot, work on the set was hastened with the shoot taking-off on September 1. Post Shah Rukh’s sequences, Jimmy Sheirgill, who plays his brother in the film, was scheduled to shoot his portions during the one-week schedule.

The "King Khan" of Bollywood Shahrukh Khan has been in the film industry for around two decades and still moving behind everything around.

SRK almost knew all his ways to utilize his stardom and his brief gains so well. "King Khan" first started under the banner of Dreamz Unlimited, and started his first assignment with his patriotic image flick in the role of a media person in "Phir Bhi Dil Hindustani", a great warrior of Indian history in "Asoka", again in his romantic image in "Chalte Chalte" which didn't performed well on the box-office.

In year 2004, Shahrukh tried his hands in the new field of being producer. Hence, he had come up with a new name of his production house "Red Chilies Entertainment" and so far, he has managed to keep it spicy with his productions.

The success of his "Main Hoon Na" made its mark on the box-office and that made a good start, then "Paheli" happened and the list goes on.

SRK has been explored a lot of in his business and found an excessive of opportunities which he can easily gather. His wife Gauri Khan and he recently bagged a 10 per cent share in BAG Glamour, and will make a venture into television content and programming.

Another business SRK has ventured into is a special effects studio. Later, Shahrukh Khan has ventured into television by producing a weekly sitcom ‘Ghar Ki Baat Hai' produced by SRK's home production ‘Red Chilies Idiot Box'. Also he came up with a reality show ‘Knights and Angels' to find cheer leaders for IPL Kolkata Knight Riders.
