My Name Is Khan might go to the Oscars

The Oscars list for 2011 might just feature a certain Mr Johar on it. My Name Is Khan, starring Kajol and SRK, and directed by Karan Johar has made it to the reminder list of movies eligible for this year's Academy Awards, joining box office heavyweights Inception, Iron Man 2 and Black Swan.

Karan said, "MNIK started off as a movement and it's heartening to hear that today it's in the broad list of films eligible to be in the running in all categories. I am deeply honoured that MNIK has that kind of acceptance level on a global platform and it's the only Indian film to enter this list. Whether it will be selected or not depends on many factors including luck but it's wonderful to know that people all over the world have loved MNIK so much that they felt it should be eligible enough to be an entry."

While it may be early days yet to predict a repeat of the Slumdog phenomenon for India's highest grossing movie overseas, the Oscar buzz around politically charged romance My Name Is Khan is enough to make Bollywood proud.

After decades, a Bollywood film to scale Great Wall

It is essentially an Indian theme in an US setting, which is now on its way to hit screens in China on November 30. In the process, My Name is Khan will be the first Indian film that will be released in China in decades.

The Shah Rukh Khan starrer will have 50 prints with Mandarin subtitles and the premiere is likely to be in Beijing.

Because of the strict entertainment policy, each year, barely 20 foreign language films make their way to movie halls of China . The country has chosen MNIK as one of its foreign language films for release in 2010. Other Indian movies such as Dr Kotnis Ki Amar Kahani (1946), Awaara (1951) and Do Bigha Zameen (1953) were the previous big hits in China. However, after 1962 India-China war, films made here became the first casualty as diplomatic relations between the two countries soured.

“The Chinese authorities are really tough when it comes to foreign films. To be asked to release MNIK is an amazing honour,” said Mr Vijay Singh, CEO, Fox Star Studios India, the distributors of the movie. It now remains to be seen if this will pave the way for other films from India and, conversely, encourage the entry of Chinese films here.

Not run of the mill

MNIK, quite unlike its predecessors that were screened in China decades ago, is not exactly a hardcore Indian film. Dr Kotnis…, on the other hand, was a sure entrant given that the focus was China, while Awaara and Do Bigha… were Indian at their core.

Where MNIK set a benchmark is the fact that it was the first Hindi film to be released in 66 countries through Fox Searchlight. This strategy, known as a platform release and adopted by major Hollywood studios, was tried out for the first time in a regular Bollywood movie.

Fox Searchlight had, incidentally, released Slumdog Millionaire with 100 prints but increased it to over 2,000 prints after seeing the response to the film.

MNIK, likewise, kicked off with 2,200 prints and gradually grew by another 500 in six months in non-traditional markets such as Egypt, Syria, Lebanon, Jordan and Poland.

Shahrukh to create history with his film’s premiere in China

Superstar Shah Rukh Khan is known as the baadshah of Bollywood and he owns a huge fan base all over the world. This time, Chinese people seem to be impressed by SRK’s charisma. Buzz has it that Shah Rukh’s ‘My Name Is Khan’ is scheduled for the premiere in China.

SRK tweets from Berlin about 19th wedding anniversary SRK and Gauri set to complete 20 years of matrimonial bliss According to the reports, China has not seen release of any Indian movie from the last thirty years. The premiere of ‘My Name Is Khan’ is tentatively slated for November 30 in Beijing.

After getting the invite, Shah Rukh and Karan Johar, director and co-producer of ‘My Name Is Khan’, seem to be on cloud nine. SRK and Karan are busy with the preparations to create history with the premiere of their film in Beijing. Karan is already deciding about Shah Rukh’s clothes for the premiere. Reportedly, the dresses will depict a mix of ethnic Indian wear with a typical Chinese style.

When contacted by a news daily, an elated Karan Johar said, “It’s an honour especially since China allows only the release of 20 foreign films a year. I can’t remember when was the last time an Indian film was released there. We must have done something right this time, no?”

Shah Rukh is currently shooing for Farhan Akhtar’s ‘Don 2’ in Berlin. He will be going to China directly from there for the premiere of his much talked about movie ‘My Name Is Khan’.

Its’ about loved ones for King Khan

He came, he conquered and still rules millions of hearts. The one name which has crossed all bounds to achieve what he deserves is none other than Shahrukh Khan. The most amazing fact about this star is his personal relationships were never hampered by stardom. SRK still comes across as a Delhi boy who values his close associates with same dignity as he has for his profession.

Let’s take a sneak peek at the beautiful relations Shahrukh share with his family and other close associates in tinsel town.

Inseparable Shahrukh and Gauri Khan: They very rightly say behind every successful man is a woman. And if the woman is the first love eventually the better half like Gauri Khan; man can’t withhold attaining success. So, the name is Shahrukh Khan whose love-story is no less than a film story where a guy can cross a millions oceans to get his love. In fact, more than love, Gauri once Chhiba and now Khan acted likes means to make films happen in Khans’ life. It was after stalking and wooing Gauri to comeback in his life when she went away fro m him to Mumbai; that SRK realized both Bollywood (Mumbai) and Gauri were his ultimate decision. And what happened next is a history now.

real-life hero: The father in Shahrukh can wear many faces for his children. Absolutely adorning himself every way like a father, a teacher, a coach, a friend; Shahrukh makes it to a perfect father. An academically sound, a true sportsman, a youthful heart like SRK brings sense of pride in his children to have a father like him. Despite all his commitments towards his work, he is aware of how to keep up with the expectations of his children which in turn pour him with unconditional love and fills his heart with joy.

SRK unconditional bond with KJO: Shahrukh like a true professional must have had good terms with many families in tinsel town most importantly Yash Chopra who brought new and fruitfuldimensions to his career. King Khan however, shares a special bonding with Karan Johar which didn’t limit till profession but their families.KJO holds a special respect for Shahrukh in fact looks upon him like a mentor. Interestingly, the filmmaker draws a line in his friendship out of this respect and is heard to more pally and comfortable with wife Gauri.

Juhi’s Lucky Ali: Juhi Chawla has been with SRK since the inception of his career be it emotionally or professionally. SRK-Juhi are a rare example in the tinsel town who have been for each other in their respective thick and thins. One can call Juhi second driving force in SRK’s life with due respect to the pious relationship they share. Lucky Ali meaning ‘lucky mascot’ is the name given to SRK by the gorgeous actress. Be it to begin a production house or beginning an IPL team Juhi has had a wonderful journey with Shahrukh. Yes Boss, Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman, Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani and many more showcased the affection the dup shared In real life.

Undeniable chemistry with Kajol: The most lovable couple might have shared an extremely beautiful chemistry on-screen. But more so, the duo’s off-screen pure friendship has been more cherished. Their bonding raised many eyebrows including Kajol’s husband Ajay Devgn who apparently happened to withhold conversation with Shahrukh. However, the beauty of their relationship lies in the respect and love in their eyes. Bazzigar, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayege, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham and My Name Is Khan. Success of each film talks about their beautiful bond they share.

Award- the real rewards: They say SRK is greedy for awards so much so that he can go to any extent to achieve them. However, such remarks have never bothered SRK for he believes Awards who ignore him are losers why clear a shelf in his house, when he can buy a new house for the awards to come. For SRK, awards are the definition to his success.

The adorable master in SRK: Shahrukh like every relationship of his has a special place for his pet as well. A dog that his loves and pampers like a child. Is mention might be last in the list but he is surely an integral part of his life.

KJo, SRK scared of Kajol

Two gorgeous ladies and a hunk. Two firebrands and one hottie. That’s how we best describe this family — Kajol, Kareena Kapoor and Arjun Rampal.

Recently, during an exclusive interview, zoOm quizzed Karan Johar on how Arjun managed to hold his own with two of the best ladies from Bollywood. KJo said, “Kajol can be intimidating. I am scared of her and even SRK has his feared moments with Kajol. So I can imagine Arjun getting intimidated by her. And you might think Kareena is with you, but sometimes while talking to her, she’s already reached planet Pluto. And you are still on Earth. So there’s one woman who is all there (Kajol) and one on another planet. Yet, it is amazing how Arjun held his own in this film. In fact, I told the ladies that if you guys think you are good, well, it’s Arjun who has won a National award. So if you have a chip on your shoulder, take it off now.” Well, it’s not just this family who is ga-ga over the Rampal.

Even SRK and Farhan (so what if he’s not doing Don 2) are mighty impressed with this rockstar, and want to work with him. We know Arjun’s good with the women, but in our big Bollywood family... the men matter too... and the Khans obviously!

Don't clash with Salman, SRK tells KJo

If Karan Johar has decided not to let his production We Are Family clash with Salman Khan’s Dabangg it is because Shah Rukh Khan advised Karan to avert a clash.

Apparently, Shah Rukh felt doubly protective towards We Are Family since it involved two of his closest friends Karan and Kajol. In fact, when Shah Rukh came to know Kajol was expecting he went out of his way to accommodate his dates for Kareena in Ra.1 with We Are Family.

Says the We Are Family director Suddharth Malhotra, “Dabangg and Shankar’s Robot are releasing on Eid. So we have Bollywood’s Rajnikanth (Salman) and Rajnikanth on the same day. It just made no sense for us to release with them. We are coming a week earlier, araam se.”

It’s not just Karan Johar who has gone out of his way for Shah Rukh Khan by doing a bit of shooting for SRK’s Ra.1 in London. SRK too has gone out of his way for his buddy Karan’s film We Are Family.

Throughout the making of the film Kareena’s dates collided with Ra.1. Every time Shah Rukh relented and let Kareena get on with Karan’s picture show.

Says a source, “When Shah Rukh got to know that Kajol was expecting he understood that Karan and his director Siddharth Malhotra’s film needed to be shot with as much speed as possible. He repeatedly let go of Kareena’s dates for Ra.1 for the sake of We Are Family. In fact, he will now let go of Kareena’s dates for the promotion of We Are Family, since Kareena will not have Kajol to support her in the marketing.” So grateful and happy is director Siddharth Anand that he wants to show the first print to Shah Rukh.

Says Siddharth, “Both Karan Johar and I are very eager to show We Are Family to Shah Rukh, who proves that he is indeed part of the family. We also want to show it to Soorajji (Barjataya) as soon as the print is ready.”

Sooraj, who has become ultra-reclusive in recent months, has agreed to watch the film next early next month. Says Siddharth, “Soorajji will be the first to watch We Are Family. My film is just 1 hour 55 minutes long. I hope I make him proud.”

Says Siddharth excitedly, “Soorajji’s Maine Pyar Kiya and Karan’s Kuch Kuch Hota Hai are my two favourite films. When I saw the first I wanted to be part of Hindi movies. When I saw the second I wanted to direct a film. We Are Family is a homage to both Sooraji and Karan. It’s also a homage to my father (Prem Kishen) who’s a big fan of Elvis Presley. In fact, my father used to sing Elvis’ Jailhouse Rock live for me. He still does. That’s how that track has found its way in We Are Family." Karan Johar purchased the rights for Elvis Presley’s Jailhouse Rock for Siddharth’s film.

“We used just the leading refrain of Elvis’ song. The rest of the track has been composed differently by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy. And we got Anuskha Manhchandani, Akriti Kakkad and Suraj Jaggan to sing for Kajol, Kareena and Arjun Rampal. The number just brought the house down when we shot it. Who danced the hardest? Me!”

Shahrukh Khan promotes Kajol's film 'We Are Family'

Shahrukh Khan has got enough reasons to have a special inclination towards We Are Family considering everyone associated with the film is his close friend. No wonder, King Khan seems to be promoting the film on twitter. Here is what he has to say.

“Saw the songs of we are family....the simplicity is endearing...I am sure it will be really really nice...can't wait to see it when I get back,” tweets Shahrukh on the micro-blogging site.

Well, as mentioned above, when celebs like Kajol, Arjun Rampal and to top it all Karan Johar is involved, good word of mouth from SRK is bound to come. Now, it remains to see how far will his words come true?

‘My Name Is Khan’ releases on DVD & Blu-Ray in U.S. on August 10

On February 12, 2010, fans of the Shahrukh Khan-Kajol onscreen pair got to see the two together again in the worldwide release of My Name Is Khan. The movie detailed the story of Rizwan Khan (Shahrukh Khan) and his quest to meet the president of the United States with a simple message: “My name is Khan, and I am not a terrorist.” Khan’s intense love for his wife (Kajol) provided the main motivation behind his cross-country journey to meet the president.

While the film released on DVD in India in April, My Name Is Khan will release on DVD and Blu-Ray worldwide on August 10. Fans who loved the film and can’t wait to own it finally get that opportunity, although those who anticipate extra features with DVD releases may be disappointed. The special features on this single-disc release are almost a perfunctory addition to the movie.

Aside from the inclusion of two film promos (with the songs “Tere Naina” and “Sajda” playing in the background), the extras menu features four short documentary-like episodes that each focus on a different topic. Each episode features bits of interviews with director Karan Johar, Shahrukh Khan and Kajol, Niranjan Iyenger (the film’s dialogue writer), and a handful of other members of the film’s crew.

The first episode, called “Changing the Face of Bollywood,” touches on My Name Is Khan as a part of the gradual transformation the Hindi film industry has undergone in the last eight years. The second, entitled “Working Together,” gives Shahrukh and Kajol a platform to discuss what it meant to work together again after nine years. “The Music of My Name Is Khan” features the film’s music directors, Shankar Mahadevan, Ehsaan Noorani, and Loy Mendonsa, collectively known as Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, and their thoughts on working with Karan Johar and composing for this movie. The final episode is “The Story of My Name Is Khan” and reveals the thought process behind the main story of the movie.

Unfortunately, each episode only runs an average of about five minutes, just long enough for viewers to get into them before they come to an end. The episodes aren’t long enough to give fans that in-depth behind-the-scenes look DVD extras typically provide. This approach to packaging the DVD is a little mystifying considering the positive response My Name Is Khan received worldwide; fans and critics eagerly anticipated the film for several reasons, but none of these reasons are addressed in a medium typically reserved for this exact purpose. There is no blooper reel, no discussion of why Karan Johar and Shahrukh Khan decided to co-produce the film (a first for them), and no revealing interview of Johar and his decision to make a film that is such a drastic departure from his previous ventures.

Of course, movie lovers get their own copy of My Name Is Khan with a crystal clear picture and waiting for the official DVD release helps fight piracy. But those fans waiting for all the extra information that a special features section on a DVD provides won’t be getting those features this time around. Fans will have to settle (mostly) for the film itself and Shahrukh’s repeated assertion: “My name is Khan, and I am not a terrorist.”

Gauri Khan initiates to bring Shahrukh Khan and Ajay Devgan together

Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol, the legendary couple of “Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge” has been the most celebrated and admired couple of Bollywood since “Baazigar”. Their exclusive chemistry on on-screen has been real delight for die hard romantics. Their on-screen love that has been epitomized in subsequent movies after DDLJ has been rage among the lovers. They have been paired together for five consecutive blockbusters without giving any fodder to gossip mongers. The best couple has always stayed away from controversies. On the flip side, it is equally true that SRK and Kajol’s hubby have not been getting along well together.

Shahrukh and Ajay’s relations seemed to get a novel turn for the better. SRK’s wife Gauri Khan has taken the initiative to overcome alleged animosity. Recently, designer Anna Singh hosted a party to celebrate her hubby’s birthday Jaiveer. The occasion was graced by several socialites including Gauri Khan, Bhavna Pandey, Neelam Kothari and Ajay Devgan. When Gauri Khan speckled Ajay Devgan in Jaiveer’s party, she all the way ascended towards him and congratulated him for his wonderful performance in “Once Upon a Time in Mumbai”. Ajay Devgan too reciprocated her compliments humbly.

It is said that time is great healer. But this saying has not worked in their case so far. The clash started 15 years back after their casting for Karan Arjun (1995) fell through. But this conversation between spouses of SRK and Kajol signals the cheery twist in SRK and Devgan’s relations.

It may be the best time to resolve the clashes between SRK and Devgan as DDLJ is going to complete 800 weeks. The celebrations will be multiplied for both of the couples. The news is really matter of merry making for Yash Raj Films. The movie has already been recorded in Guinness’s Book of World Records. Also it has surpassed the success story of “Sholay”. It is the only movie to gain the pride of running 800 weeks altogether. And this one calls for celebrations on the part of Yash Raj Films who have planned to rejoice the success of movie in Feb, 2011.

Shahrukh Khan celebrates with Kajol

The millennium most celebratedon-screen couple Shahrukh Khan ad Kajol have got yet another reason to celebrate. And the reason is the completion of 800 weeks of their much-celebrated film Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge in the cinema halls.

Yash Chopra would be announcing the call for a mega celebration next week when movie will comlete its 800 weeks. DDLJ has beaten Sholay for Ramesh Sippy’s masterpiece lasted for 286 weeks in Minerva theatre in Mumbai.

The celebration are planned to take palce next year in Febraury either in Maratha Mandir where the film has been showcased since 1995 or some five star hotel.

Happy Birthday, Kajol!

It’s Kajol’s birthday today and the dusky beauty is beaming with the joy of motherhood once again. Presently expecting her second baby (she already has a daughter named Nysa), Kajol says this birthday is special because her life and her career are going great guns.

The success of My Name Is Khan has put Kajol’s sagging career back on track and the curiosity that’s building around her upcoming release We Are Family would flatter any actress who’s in her mid thirties. Remember, in Bollywood, an actress’s career is cut short the day she outgrows the lovely twenties.

This birthday, Kajol is getting a special gift from good friend Karan Johar. It’s Karan’s home production We Are Family which will release on September 3, less than a month from her birthday. And of course, her loving hubby Ajay Devgan, and no less loving in-laws, have something planned for the birthday lady.

We wish Kajol a very happy birthday.

Shahrukh Khan, Kajol, Rani Mukherjee Coming Back Together In 'Koochie Koochie Hota Hai'

An animated version of the popular hit movie “Kuch Kuch Hota Hai” is in its pre production stage and the original movie stars – Shahrukh Khan (SRK), Kajol, and Rani Mukherji would be coming back together to feature in this movie. The movie is being called “Koochie Koochie Hota Hain” and the name suggests that the movie is being targeted towards kids and teenagers.

Instead of playing like human characters in the original movie, the stars will be playing the voices of dogs in the animated remake of the movie. Sanjay Dutt will also be starring in the movie and it is quite possible that his role in the movie is smaller than the rest three.

The movie also features Riteish Deshmukh, Anupam Kher, Uday Chopra and Simi Garewal who will be representing the voices of other animal characters in the movie.

The movie is being directed by Tarun Mansukhani and produced by Karan Johar. Koochie Koochie Hota Hai is set to be coming out in the year 2010.

The Bollywood romcom still showing after 15 years

After a summer of under-performing blockbusters, Hollywood bosses might do well to look at the incredible success of India's longest-running film, still packing in cinema-goers after 15 years.

Boy meets girl, boy loses girl, boy gets girl: a classic recipe for box office bullion

Released in 1995, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (The big hearted will take the bride) has become one of the most popular films of all time.

Having broken all records in terms of number of showings and box office takings, it is now in its 769th week at one of the main cinemas in Mumbai (Bombay), the beating heart of Bollywood.

And the film continues to play to a nearly full house over weekends at the 1,000-plus-seat Maratha Mandir cinema in the south of the city.

Spectators stream in in steady numbers for the matinee show of DDLJ - as it is popularly known - at the 52-year-old cinema.

The best seats cost just 20 rupees (42 US cents; 27 UK pence).

Manoj Desai, executive director of the cinema, says the movie has been a record-breaking success for multiple reasons.

The film catapulted Shahrukh Khan to Bollywood megastardom

"The film is perfect with lovely music and the best Bollywood pair," he says.

"Also, this theatre is in a strategic location where we get 40% viewing from people who are travelling into or out of Mumbai.

"This place is for masses, so the rates have been maintained for years. Most importantly the film is important because of its message of love with parents' permission."

For sheer box office staying power, the movie has even leap-frogged classics such as The Sound of Music and The Guns of Navarone, Mr Desai said.

'Magical'

It is a love story, where boy meets girl (both Indians living in London) on a trip to Europe.

But girl's marriage is already fixed to her father's friend's son in Punjab in India.

I never get bored of DDLJ - It's like I am in a loving relationship with the film” - Jagjivan Maru (Chief projectionist)

What follows is an entertaining drama careering between London and Punjab, and in the end, of course, the lovers get together - with the families' blessing.

The lead pair, Shahrukh Khan and Kajol, became stars overnight.

The film catapulted Shahrukh Khan, now also known as King Khan, to the top league of stars and he was typecast as a "romantic hero" for years.

Cinema officials say nearly all seats are taken at weekends and the film sometimes does better than new releases.

The film is now run on a no-profit, no-loss basis for the theatre as well as for Yash Raj Films, producer of DDLJ.

Jagjivan Maru, the cinema's chief projectionist, who has been showing this movie since its release, says it is magical.

"I have seen this movie every day for the last 14 years. That is a record in itself. It is our job to show the film. However, I never get bored of DDLJ.

"It's like I am in a loving relationship with the film. I still love the last scene when Amrish Puri [who plays father of the actress] slaps Shahrukh Khan."

A story well told

Rishi, who had come to see the film, said: "I had seen this film earlier four to five times many years back. I also see it on TV once in while.

The laughed, they cried, they came back to see it again and again

"I dropped in with my friends. Maybe I still like the film because I first saw it in my college days and it really worked then. Most of my friends saw the film many times - for the love story, songs and the actors."

Taran Adarsh, a trade analyst says: "It is not about the records this film has set. Records will follow if there is content.

"This film has got everything right: music, actors, direction. The movie is still making decent collections despite it being shown on TV very often. It is a story well told."

The cinema officials plan to keep the film running as long as they can and have planned a big celebration in October 2010 to mark the full 15 years since its release.

Among other popular features of the movie is its catchphrase "Come, fall in love" - and the audience at Maratha Mandir seemed to have done just that with DDLJ.
