Shahrukh Khan Some of the biggest names from the film industry would be seen paying tribute to Michael Jackson on his 51st birthday. Come 29th of August and Shah Rukh Khan, Vishal and Shekhar, Shahid Kapoor, Shankar Mahadevan, Prabhu Deva, Priyanka Chopra and Yuvraj Singh amongst others would be featuring in a music video titled 'Make it Large- A tribute to Michael Jackson'.

It was Shah Rukh Khan's idea to get a tribute rolling for the music legend who passed away on 25th June this year.

Says Vishal Dadlani of Vishal-Shekhar duo, "The entire world was upset about his demise and so were Shekhar (Ravjiani) and I. We happened to meet Shah Rukh and he also expressed his thought about doing something that would be befitting the stature of the man who entertained us for decades. This is how the idea around the music video was born."

Vishal and Shekhar soon set a task for themselves and began working on the song. It was decided that the music video would be launched on 29th August to coincide with Michael Jackson's birthday. While Vishal also wrote the lyrics for the song, some of the best singers in the industry - Shankar Mahadevan, Shaan, KK and Shreya Ghoshal - were roped in come behind the mike.

"For the moment, the idea is to launch the music video across all music channels just for one day. It is available on Red Chillies Entertainment website though", informs Vishal who is currently holidaying in London.

Directed by Samar Khan, a close associate of Shah Rukh and director of films like Shaurya and Kuch Meetha Ho Jaaye,'Make it Large- A tribute to Michael Jackson' is also special since it features Prabhudeva who is yet again seen at his dancing best.

Also, the video features testimonials on Michael Jackson from Shah Rukh Khan himself along with Shahid Kapoor, Hrithik Roshan, Priyanka Chopra, Katrina Kaif, Anushka Sharma and Yuvraj Singh.

To extend the tribute, Vishal and Shekhar would also be allowing free download of the song at their website beginning 29th August.

"The video wasn't created for making money. It's a tribute and I am sure there are millions out there who would want to grab a copy of the song for themselves. We are more than glad to share our sentiments with the rest of the world", concludes Vishal.

King SRK'S Tribute to King of Pop

Michael Jackson has influenced Bollywood for decades now. From his signature moves to his singing, he has inspired everyone from musicians to technicians.

Now, Bollywood unites to pay a heartfelt tribute to the King of Pop in a video, which will be aired on Michael Jackson’s birthday on August 29. The initiative has been taken by Shah Rukh Khan himself.

Vishal Dadlani confirmed the story and said, “The song is titled, We lived in his world.”

Our source said, “Shah Rukh Khan is a huge fan of the late Michael Jackson and when the creative heads in Red Chilles pitched the idea, he loved it. He had cried when he learnt about MJ’s death. He was also supposed to attend one of the London concerts which never happened. So, the idea was finalised and they decided to make a music video as a tribute. The best talent for the song was Vishal of the Vishal-Shekhar duo. Vishal is a huge fan too and he was in shock for days when he learnt about MJ’s death.

He has written this passionate song and it has been composed by Vishal-Shekhar. They are also the performers in the video with singers Kay Kay, Shaan, Sunidhi Chauhan and Shreya Goshal, among others. The video will have heartfelt messages by top stars like SRK, Hrithik Roshan, Prabhu Deva, Shahid Kapoor, Harman Baweja, Yuvraj Singh, Katrina Kaif, Kangna Ranaut and Priyanka Chopra, among others. The video, currently being shot, is directed by Samar Khan.”

The source further said, “None of the people associated with the video has charged a penny and it’s their love for the legendary singer that has brought them together. It’s been shot in low lighting and has a unique mood. The video will be aired on all the leading channels on August 29, MJ’s birthday. The song has been choreographed by Remo.”

Samar Khan remained unavailable for comment.

SRK to finalise the IPL anthem

Shah Rukh Khan has asked Vishal-Shekhar as well as Pritam to do the remix version of the IPL anthem 'Karbo, Larbo, Jeetbo Re'. He will finally select the version which he likes best.

Shah Rukh Khan’s Kolkata Knight Riders’ anthem ‘Karbo, Larbo, Jeetbo Re’ will become a remixed number during the forthcoming IPL season. Our source says that now SRK wants a modified version of the anthem for which music directors Vishal-Shekhar and Pritam are close contenders. Interestingly, SRK will choose whichever of the two versions he will prefer.

While SRK has instructed Vishal-Shekar, who had composed the original anthem last year, to come up with a remixed version for this year’s IPL, he also approached his current favourite music director Pritam who gave music in his recent home production Billu for the same.

Our source said, “Vishal-Shekar and Pritam are both working on the same anthem. Let’s see who comes up with a better composition. The offer to both the music directors was made only recently.”

It may be recalled that last year, Vishal-Shekar were closely associated with SRK since they were working with him on Om Shanti Om even while composing the anthem for Kolkata Knight Riders. However lately, SRK and Pritam have also been working closely because of Billu.

When contacted, Vishal asked, “Who told you this?” and he quickly went on to deny that SRK had approached them to modify ‘Karbo, Larbo, Jeetbo Re’. Vishal added, “I would love to do something like that and give some sort of a spin to the anthem.” Shekar too denied that SRK had approached them for a remixed version but then he quickly added, “That would be really cool.”

Vishal said, “I haven’t heard that SRK has asked Pritam to do the remixed version. SRK is a professional and if such a thing happens, we will be told about it. But, if Pritam goes on to do it, we have no issues as long as the anthem rocks and the team is inspired by it.”

Despite repeated attempts, Pritam remained unavailable for comment. We sent a text message to SRK but he didn’t reply.

As for whose remixed version SRK will finally select, may the best man win.

SRK's win-win situation!

Shah Rukh Khan's film, Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi for Yash Raj promises to be a good listen judging by the musicans chosen for the task.

The hot contenders include the duos Salim-Suleman and Vishal-Shekhar.

Although sources inform that Aditya Chopra, who is directing the film has agreed to give the baton to Salim-Sulema, who earlier composed for SRK's hit Chak De! India, it remains unclear whether the duo will compose only the background music (for which they're famous for) or if the baton for the rest of the film's music may go to the other musical duo, Vishal-Shekhar.

Vishal-Shekhar too have also worked with Shah Rukh Khan in the past. The duo bonded with King Khan during the making of Om Shanti Om.

But then brothers Salim and Suleman Merchant have an incredible track record as well. The brothers have composed the background music of many films including Chak De, Krrish, Dhoom 2 and Namastey London, to mention a few.

So it looks like a win-win situation for SRK, either way!

The Re-Virginisation of Shah Rukh Khan

Re-Introduction is an under-statement, considering the amazing and 'abs'olutely commendable effort that has been invested in generating SRK's brand 'new look'.

It's a week since the first look of 'Dard-E-Disco' was out and the song, especially due to 'perfect-six-abs' of Shah Rukh Khan, is already the talk of the town.

Composed by Vishal-Shekhar and written by Javed Akhtar, 'Dard E Disco' is a 'jump-on-the-dance-floor' number which has a Persian touch to it even as overall feel of the song stays on to be Western.

"I am thrilled with the kind of reactions the song is fetching. As the teaser suggests, this is my way of re-introducing Shah Rukh Khan", quips Farah Khan, director of this year's most awaited film Om Shanti Om.

Re-introduction it certainly is, considering the fact that after 'Kaal Dhamaal' [Kaal] where he danced in designer sleeveless vests with Malaika Arora, Shah Rukh Khan has shed his inhibitions further and gone the Monty route, even if it is only half the way!

"Well, full credit to Shah Rukh for attempting something like this which showcases him in an altogether different 'avtaar'", talks Farah fondly for her superstar friend, "The idea was to give him a much leaner look, while refraining from making it all look artificial.
I really thought that with this new look (referring to SRK’s recent six-pack avatar), he looks almost like a new comer. He has never been seen like this before. At an age where most actors are putting on their shirts, he has chiseled his body at the age of 42."

SRK, Farah grandly release the Music of Om Shanti Om

The music of Shah Rukh Khan's much awaited movie Om Shanti Om was released officially today, in the presence of the cast and crew of the film.

Music directors Vishal and Shekhar have composed the songs of the film, while lyrics of most songs have been penned by Javed Akhtar, music director Vishal has also written lyrics for the song Ajab Si, which is currently on air.

"We have never worked on such a large scale for the music of any film, with so many musicians and singers," said Vishal at the launch.

Commenting on the music, actor and producer Shah Rukh Khan said, "There is a lot of variety in the songs. Since the first half is based in the 1970's era, we even requested Pyarelalji do the arrangements for a song."

A live orchestra of 140 music pieces was arranged for the song Dhoom Tana.

Commenting on Vishal and Shekhar's work Farah Khan said, "The music is very different from what Vishal and Shekar's previous movies' songs. The songs of Om Shanti Om are experimental but at the same time very commercial."

While one of the songs in the film has almost 36 film stars in it, another song Dard-E-Disco has Shah Rukh Khan flaunting his six pack abs for which he worked rigorously for three months. "Farah was always keen to shoot a topless song with me, she even made me wear a vest in the Kaal song," joked Khan.

Farah added, "Dard-E-Disco was the last song choreographed by me, so I pleaded Shah Rukh to do a topless song for me. Now, as a choreographer I will only take up international projects or my own films. Besides this I will not choreograph anymore... not for Karan Johar, Shirish (her husband) or Sajid (her brother)."

The Music of Om Shanti Om is all set to conquer charts and stay there

Producer /Banner : Red Chillies Entertainment
Director : Farah Khan
Music : Vishal & Shekhar
Lyrics : Javed Akhtar , Kumar (Punjabi) and Vishal
Vocals :Abhijit, Caralisa, K.K, Marianne, Nisha, Rahul Saxena, Shaan, Shreya Ghoshal, Sonu Nigam, Sunidhi Chauhan, Sukhwinder Singh and Udit Narayan
Label : T-Series

Just few years back, we reviewed the audio album of ‘Main Hoon Na’, that had the same team of Shah Rukh Khan, Farah Khan and Javed Akhtar. But are we missing someone here? Oh yes, the chart conquering composer of the 2004 album, Anu Malik is not associated with the 2007 album, ‘Om Shanti Om’. Given the fact that Anu is out of form and circulation, the decision of picking Vishal & Shekhar on their current form seems to be correct. How correct, we will know shortly.

Farah Khan’s 35-crore bonanza, ‘Om Shanti Om’, based mainly in the psychedelic 70s, kick starts with the absolutely mesmerizing, petal-soft, romantic track ‘Ajab Si’. Right from the first notes, the soft beats and caressing guitar strings set just the right pace for K. K. to take over. The lyrics by (no its not Javed Akhtar) by Vishal (what a pleasant surprise!) are simple and superb - “Aankhon mein teri, Ajab si ajab si adaayen hain, Dil ko bana de jo patang, Saansein ye teri who hawaayein hain.” The arrangements by Vishal & Shekhar and K.K.’s superb rendition gel perfectly.

Next up, we run into the ‘6-pack’ (SRK) song, ‘Dard-E-Disco’. The Arabic styled composition is more in the qawwali mold rather than in the disco alley! Once again, the lyrics (this time by Javed Akhtar) are the first thing that grab attention - “Woh haseena woh neelam pari, Kar gayee kaisi jadoogari, Neend in aankhon se cheen li hai, Dil mein bechainiyan hai bhari.” The lyrics couldn’t have been more perfect and Sukhwinder takes over, and is in top form! His voice modulation floats in perfect unison with the music and the lyrics, changing pace and pitch as per the mood and requirement. The background (Arabic style) vocals and crooning enhance the composition further. In a nutshell, ‘Dard-E-Disco’ takes us back to the early 70s, and we are reminded of countless Pran enacted qawwalis, with ‘Dard-E-Disco’ (in the lyrics) adding a touch of humour. As we have already mentioned at the start, the arrangements are more in the qawwali mold with slight touches of disco beats.

‘Dard-E-Disco (Remix)’, by DJ Aqeel has all the right ingredients needed for a good rehash and will serve its purpose of burning the dance floors of the pubs and the discos with its heightened pace. A nice effort.

Moving on, we reach ‘Dhoom Taana’ and the duff, anklet, woodwind and other traditional percussion instruments remind one of ‘Sargam’ days of melody and dance (Rishi Kapoor and Jaya Prada). The arrangements, lyrics and settings are based in not just 70s but early 80s. There are also a few jazz snatches (maybe a Shammi Kapoor touch). While Abhijeet is the perfect choice with his flawless rendition, Shreya gets high pitched in a few parts. This is the song that has been composed by the legendary composer, Pyarelal (of ‘Laxmi-Pyare’ fame) the song will look and sound better on screen.

Jaltarang and piano combine magically, followed by bead sounds, accompanying Sonu Nigam’s silken smooth, Rafi like rendition. Yes, we have now reached ‘Main Agar Kahoon’. Javed Akhtar’s lyrics combined with Sonu’s extraordinary singing create an almost bewitching romantic duet (with an in form Shreya). The two stars of the outstanding ‘Main Agar Kahoon’ are Javed Akhtar’s lyrics and Sonu Nigam’s singing. Right now, we cannot bring in Sonu but here are some of Javed Sahab’s lyrics – “Tumko paya hai to jaise khoya hoon, Kahna chahoon bhi to tumse kya kahoon, Kisi zabaan mein bhi, Woh lafz hee nahin, Ki jinme tum ho kya tumhein bata sakoon , Main agar kahoon, Tumsa haseen, Kaynaat mein nahin hai kahin.” A nostalgic throwback to the golden era of late Mohammad Rafi-Roshan days! The number concludes with the ‘Om Shanti Om’ theme music.

‘Dastan-E-Om Shanti Om’ can well be summed up as one of the most important (if not the most) tracks of ‘Om Shanti Om’. It sums up the entire central theme of reincarnation and betrayal. The track commences with sonorous opera like singing, followed by a big live orchestra sounds from 40 plus violins, percussion instruments ranging from tabla and dhol to santoor and heavy piano pieces and the impact leaves one awestruck. Shaan soon commences in a rather base and matter-of-fact voice “Sunne waalon, Suno aisa bhi hota hai, Koi jitna hanse, Utna hi rota hai, Deewani hoke haseena, Khayee kya dhoke haseena, Aao tum bhi aaj sun lo, Dastan hain ye ki us masoom haseena ne jise chaha, Woh tha andar se harjaee, Sangdil se dil laga ke bewafa ke haath aa ke us ne ek din maut hi payee, Ek Sitam ka fasana hai jis ko sabhi, Kehte hain Om Shanti Om.” For the fans of ‘Ek Haseena Thi’ (’Karz’) this one tries to recapture the spirit of the legendary song. With a somewhat different approach and kudos to the team of Vishal & Shekhar, Javed Akhtar and the orchestra, it succeeds in a big way, despite the big legacy it had to live up to. Shaan’s singing, to some stunning situational lyrics and the big orchestra sounds are guaranteed to make ‘Dastan-E-Om Shanti Om’ one of the highlighted tracks of the film.

‘Dastaan (The Dark Side Mix)’, by Zoheb, DJ Nikhil Chinappa and DJ Naved commences on a faster tempo. The version loses some of its suspense and edge-of-the seat element due to too much audio interference.

Richa Sharma, the queen of Punjabi folk singing, commences the heart touching, ‘Jag Soona Soona Lage’, with a ‘heer’ style singing. She deserves a perfect ten for her flawless rendition. The OSO theme music has been used to superb effect with Kumaar’s Punjabi lyrics. Then its Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, who after ‘Laagi Man Ki Lagan’ (’Paap’), ‘Bol Na Halke Halke’ (’Jhoom Barabar Jhoom’) and ‘Main Jahan Bhi Rahoon’ (’Namastey London’), has truly inherited the legacy of his illustrious uncle, the late Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. But let us not deviate from the superbly composed, as well as rendered composition. V-S deserve all the praise for a number that is just perfect in all departments. Be it, at times soft and at times harsh musical arrangements (in form of plates and guitars), Rahat’s brilliant performance and last but not the least, Javed Sahab’s heart-wrenching lyrics in simple Hindi and Urdu. “Roothi roothi saari raatein, Pheeke Pheeke saare din, Veerani see veerani hai, Tanhaai see tanhaai hai, Aur ek hum hain pyaar ke bin, Har pal chin.”

Is ‘Deewangi Deewangi’ the highlighted song featuring almost the who’s who of Bollywood? All seems to point to it. In a way, this one is also the theme track as the fun gaiety, party song goes ” Aqlo hosh na mee danum” (which is in Persian and means “I know not what is wisdom and sense”), Hum hain dil aur janam, Bas dewangi deewangi dewaangi hai”. The chorus also chants, “All the hot girls put your hands up and say Om Shanti Om. All the cool boys c’mon make some noise and say Om Shanti Om”. The trade mark OSO tune is also present in its grandeur. Definitely a scorcher of a track, which gets turbo charged by talented singers like Shaan, Udit Narayan, Rahul Saxena, Shreya and Sunidhi. The track concludes with the orchestra going full blast with the OSO tune.

‘Deewangi (Rainbow mix)’ by DJ Kiran and DJ G is a nice piece of work. The already pacy all-star cast song has a more hectic pace than the original. The vocals have not been violated much, only the musical arrangements change to give it a good effect.

The ‘Om Shanti Om’ theme music (programmed by Abhijit Nalani) has Pyarelal written all over it. It is a superb piece, played brilliantly on piano. It starts with a slow pace, picks up and finally concludes on a slow note, but it is enough to leave a mark on the listener.

The ‘Om Shanti Om (medley mix)’ by Jackie V. is an assortment of a few songs (remixed superbly) featured in the album. The snatches of ‘Dhoom Tana’, ‘Dard-E-Disco’, and ‘Deewangi Deewangi’ can be relished once again through this version.

To sum it up, the Pyarelal touch looms large on the audio of ‘Om Shanti Om’. It is truly a complete 70 mm (a prestigious 70s & 80s term) album experience.

It’s a path-breaking work by Vishal & Shekhar, who break the myth about them being only rockish kind of composers, as they take on a melodious yatra from the early 70s to the present day.

If one is a fan of the melodious (non-synthesized) Bollywood era and even if one is not aware of it, it’s a must buy for all those who call themselves lovers of Bollywood.

Its melody and poetry.

If the initial response to the audio is any indication, ‘Om Shanti Om’ is all set to conquer the charts and stay there for a while.

Cool Retro Music in Om Shanti Om : Review

Farah Khan loves the seventies! If the choreographer-turned-director's debut Main Hoon Naa saw her parody the swinging era, her latest Om Shanti Om, too, time travels all the way from 2007 to 1977 to explore her favourite decade in its hey day.

A full-blown musical set within the film industry and involving a reincarnation theme, Om Shanti Om, with its clever title and chromatic glory promises to be quite the cracker this Diwali.

While Shah Rukh Khan leads the brat pack, Arjun Rampal and Shreyas Talpade also star in this November 9 release (Yup, same day as Sanjay Leela Bhansali's grand opus Saawariya), which introduces model-turned-actress, Deepika Padukone on the big screen.

The bright, young duo of Vishal-Shekhar whip up an eclectic soundtrack against Javed Akhtar's imaginative penmanship, which is both nifty and retro. It might not be path breaking stuff but it's still really good. Instead of relying on old tunes and stretching their lingering memory, the pair formulates fresh sounds that are inspiring and lilting.

The album begins with the melting Ajab Si in KK's silvery voice about an awe-struck, starry-eyed romantic oozing poetry, penned impressively by Vishal, for his stunning lady love. The sheer velvety quality of its notes and smooth arrangement is akin to the melodious magic of Jhankaar Beats' Suno Na.

On screen, SRK shows off his brilliantly-sculpted six pack and shirtless avatar, while behind the scenes Sukhwinder Singh brings the studio down with his red-hot rendition of Dard-e-Disco. Despite its snazzy middle eastern influences, Vishal-Shekhar maintain a moderate percussion, leaving ample breathing space for the singer to spread his vocal wings. DJ Aqueel's zingy remix of Disco is high on zing and bound to enjoy a long run at clubs and discotheques.

The opening zig-zag strain tarrying all through the track is super catchy and adds bounce and attitude to the bubbly Deewangi Deewangi. The song pays a tribute to Naseeb's John Jaani Janardan what with practically half of Bollywood, from Dharmendra to Karisma Kapoor, making a special appearance.

That it has a tang 'rainbow' remix, goes without saying. Like the name suggests, the techno-washed version is loaded with colourful beats and infectious verve. Ditto for Om Shanti Om medley mix, which features bits and pieces from the entire album.

Main Agar Kahoon is a full-fledged piano number laced in fairy-tale romance, which works as the central theme of Om Shanti Om. Sonu Nigam and Shreya Ghosal are appropriately sweetness-personified in this music-box track.

Taking a break from the vibrant mood of the album so far, Jag Soona Soona Laga charges on the unprepared listener's senses with its heartbreaking starkness and haunting melody. Richa Sharma's Punjabi delivery coupled with Rahat Fateh Ali Khan's ardent cry ensures Jag Soona will find a place in a compilation of Javed Akhtar's sad ditties.

The flamboyant memories of Laxmikant-Pyarelal and R D Burman's 1970s are brought back in Dhoom Taana variating from daflis and drums to rock 'n' roll. While watching Shah Rukh and Deepika mock Teesri Manzil, Humjoli or Himmatwala, sounds like fun on celluloid, this one's not so much of a Dhoom on stereo.

Daastan-e-Om Shanti Om with its dramatic effusion and sizzling orchestra (The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra) recounts a reborn man's bitter saga of love and betrayal. Heavily influenced by Karz's immortal Ek Haseena Thi, sans the iconic guitar play though, in narrative and format, Dastaan is rocking in its own right.

Though Shaan's rendering might not be 'tough guy' stuff, he conveys the angst of his protagonist only too well. Sadly, the Dark Side mix by Zoheb, Nikhil Chinapa and DJ Naweb with all it's electronic tinkering is not a patch on the theatrical original.

Finally, Om Shanti Om is an out and out musical that captivates with its roaring polyphony and unabashed drama.

"Sorry for being late. But when you're a superstar, you tend come late," SRK

He kept the audience waiting. He came an hour late. But it must be part of his innate charm, which explains his immense popularity, that Shah Rukh Khan, while apologising for his tardiness, openly joked about it and still managed to draw guffaws of laughter. "Sorry for being late. But when you're a superstar, you tend come late," he muttered impishly. "You know, I'm staying in the hotel. I've been here two days, and still I managed to come late. That's a record."

The Bollywood superstar was in town to launch the music of Om Shanti Om, his latest movie directed by Farha Khan, on CDs and mobile in the UAE. The film's heroine, Deepika Padukone, dressed in a flaming red chudidaar, was also present at the event organised by T-Series, Viva Entertainment and Hungama Mobile at the Jumeirah Beach Hotel.

Dressed in a black trouser and a white shirt, his long hair dangling behind in a pony, the actor was like a laid-back, cool dude — flippant, mock-serious and hilarious. His fast-delivered jokes drew repeated laughter. He also looked absolutely toned up, with all abs, pectorals and a hard, flat belly.

He admitted that this body-type was a script requirement for Om Shanti Om. "The actor that I'm playing in the film is an actor of 2007. And I feel that young guys of today are very aware of their physicality, of having abs, being dudish etc. So in the film I'm like a young star," he said. Then joked, "I'm still working on the younger part. But I'm not going to take off my shirt for every second movie that I make."

When asked why he chooses Dubai for the launch of many of his events, his immediate retort was, "Why not? Dubai has grown, in every sense. It's the biggest hub for business and entertainment. And it's close to home. Besides we have friends here. Confirming the buzz that he owns property in Dubai, the actor admitted that he has a place at The Palm. And he hopes to get it by November this year.

When asked whether his preference for the kinds of roles has changed what with films like Chak De and Om Shanti Om, which are different from his usual masala films, the actor said, "Actually I'm just an employee of the directors and producers who offer me roles. I don't do more than three films a year. The kind of stuff I get I do from the heart and I continue doing it. I know many a times a film comes along like Chak De and people say, 'Oh, he's now playing different roles.'

I think the media, journalists, film analysts, critics and others, with due respect to them, tend to look for trends. But there's no trend. I get a story, I like it and I just do it off-the-cuff sometimes. A story is what turns me on. If I've a story that turns me on, I do it. But there is no concerted effort where I say, 'Okay, I'm playing a different kind of role.' So my preference has not changed."

He had made a comment recently to the effect that Hollywood offers were not coming his way. When asked whether that has changed since then, he joked, "Since then, nobody has still come. They don't know what they're losing!"

When asked how it feels to be competing against star families, like the Bachchans and the Roshans, he said, "First of all, we're good friends. We don't spend time thinking about competing. I've done films with all of them. Of course, I can't call Sr Bachchan my friend as he's much older to me. Secondly, you know I really compete with myself. I teach this to my kids as well. I think in our line of artistic work, what we need to do is to compete with our last best effort. We need to improve ourselves, to raise the bar for ourselves, to get the expression right for ourselves. We need to have blinkers on, like a racehorse, and run straight and not look here and there. There are no numbers, like number 1, number 2 or 3 or 4. It might sound clichéd. But I just work for myself. It's not a business product. It's a creative thing."

About the success of his offbeat film Chak De, he said, "As I said before, I do a film if I like the story, if it's nice, entertaining, done differently. Chak De was one of those films. It's a different film. And I'm glad that people can take on a film which had virtually nothing: no song, no heroine, with 16 new girls, with me in no romantic lead, and about a sport which is not very popular. So its success is very humbling and it gives you faith that you can make entertaining films which say something different.

When asked how he maintains his passion for film making and keeps himself from becoming complacent, Shah Rukh Khan said, "I've no big pleasures or big distractions in life. I've been working for 16 years now. And it's easy to get bored or complacent. I think everything else that I got, I make sure of my core job, which is to get that one expression right. I don't think much harder than that. My whole dedication is to wake up every morning, go to work, like any other person, and strive to get that one expression right that immensely satisfies me. Sometimes the nicest things that I do people don't even notice them. And I don't get disappointed with that, as long as I am happy that I have done that. I'm extremely detached to the work that I do. I enjoy it. It fails, it saddens, but when it succeeds it makes me happy. And then I think, can I get the next expression right? And these small simple things help me not get complacent. And I have a family and friends who don't think much of me as an actor. Every morning they tell me I suck. And that makes me think: let me try harder. There's no alternative to hard work."

Om Shanti Om music in piracy grip

MUMBAI: The most expensive audio deal of Bollywood, between music major T-Series and Shah Rukh Khan for the latter's new movie Om Shanti Om, has succumbed to pirates even as the music was made available in stores today (15 September, 2007).

When contacted by Businessofcinema.com, T-Series Public Performance License (PPL) president M M Satish said, "Yes, I am aware that the pirated songs are already available online but unfortunately I cannot stop it."

Satish further adds, "The demand for Om Shanti Om music is high, therefore the piracy levels will also be high. Just that way T-Series has invested so much money in buying the audio rights, the pirates too have invested big money."

Director Farah Khan too is aware of the music piracy. She says, "It is disgusting. T-Series also knows about it and they should be doing something about it."

What's more, the director helplessly adds, "I also know that when my movie releases on 9 November, the pirated copies will be out on that day itself. But we really cannot do anything about it and the government also doesn't help us."

When queried whether any action is being taken against these pirates, Satish says, "I have met DCP Sanjay Mohite from the Social Service Branch with regard to this but due to the ongoing Ganpati festival there is very little he can do about this at the moment."

Pointing to the root cause of this menace, both Satish and Farah Khan are of the opinion that since the CDs are delivered to the distributors three - four days in advance and are also dispatched overseas two - three days in advance, that apparently must be the source of the piracy.

At the time of filing this story Shah Rukh Khan, who is currently in Dubai, was not available for comment. Khan is in Dubai for an announcement regarding the film's music album being made available for full downloads on mobile handsets and digital media across 23 countries including the UK, US, UAE, India, Singapore, Sri Lanka and Malaysia.

On a concluding note Farah Khan adds, "The audio CD is not very expensive. It only costs Rs 110 and comes with an autographed SRK poster, Om Shanti Om booklet and photographs. No one can get a package like this at such a cheap rate."

This Music will go on and on and on....

As Diwali ’07 makes its way around the corner, we can all expect to witness the Best of Bollywood so to speak. Of course it’s all speculation – but Farah Khan’s Om Shanti Om is supposed to be one of the biggest, badest, most lavish products to hit floors this year.

Well, it’s a bit too early to lay a hand on the cinematic product, but it’s time to extensively discuss its soundtrack – of which much has been said and speculated till date.

The fact that the film’s music was first offered to A.R. Rahman says a lot. Obviously Farah felt the film was deserving of a soundtrack that emulates nothing less than extraordinary. Unfortunately, for whatever reason (speculations overflow), Rahman saab was forced to leave the project. Well, one man’s loss is another man’s gain. In this case, there are two lucky fellows who profit – the versatile duo of Vishal-Shekhar.

As if asking Vishal-Shekhar to fill the shoes of Rahman wasn’t enough; Farah requested the musical ambiance to tip-toe along the R.D. Burmanesque trend. Yes, the music Is intended to take listeners back several decades…back to when “music was real music,” whatever that is supposed to mean.

Sure, Vishal-Shekhar have faced expectations before, but none compared to the ones they face today. Not only will their skills be pushed to the limit, but their versatility and adaptability will be tested more so than ever. And finally we have lyricist Javed Akhtar, who has grown quite fond of Vishal-Shekhar as of late. I think I went through a minor anxiety attack while picking the CD up – probably because I keep praying and hoping V-S can finally give us that one score that will just knock your socks off, especially since their previous three soundtracks this year (Honeymoon Travels Pvt. Ltd., Ta Ra Rum Pum, and Cash) have definitely not been up to V-S standards. Enough chit-chat folks. Here we go…

Oh my how the Gods of Music have smiled upon us! Ajab Si is arguably one of the most gentle pieces the year has to offer – its sounds, evoking an aura of fragile beauty. An acoustic-heavy composition, Vishal-Shekhar arrange a piece that highlights the MDs’ strengths – light-hearted romance (yes it’s a genre I’ve made up, but you know what I’m talking about). And if you don’t know what I’m talking about, then listen to their techno-heavy work in CASH’s soundtrack…now imagine the EXACT opposite. The composers keep it very simple when it comes to the sounds, yet their creative minds are working very intricately to come up with instrumentation rarely heard in today’s racy musical world. Listen to the stanzas, and marvel at the skittish splashes of an intriguing synth that pans timidly from left to right – as if teasing the vocals. Or perhaps you’d like to glance over at the shy stringing of a harp, whose very brief presence seems to want to entice, lure, and charm the listener.

In many ways, ‘Ajab Si’ reminds us of a previous gem by V-S, which was quick to be forgotten – Chand Ki Roshni from the film ‘Home Delivery.’ And the similarities continue into the vocals, as it is K.K. once again who is blessed with the opportunity to render one of V-S’s greatest tunes. Or wait, are V-S the ones blessed to have K.K. render one of his greatest songs? Well, either way – both are very privileged. I know it’s cliché but…It’s as if K.K. was born to sing this very song. His evocative vocals seamlessly latch onto the acoustic rhythm, becoming one with the music. Vishal pens this one himself and is at his romantic best. Little credit is ever given to Vishal, who writes a lot of his own songs with elegance. However, so much of your attention will simply be captivated by the musical and vocal elements of the piece that you will find yourself completely unaware of the lyrics at times, as was the case with me during my first exposure to this gorgeous spectacle of sound. Excuse me, while I have another listen…

Next up we have Dard-E-Disco, three words I doubt you will ever hear together again. OK – this is what V-S are somewhat known for (heavy beats, loud sounds, arrangements belonging to the techno/club genre). Of course if you were to ask me, I feel Track #1 is what they are best at. But I digress. Dard-E-Disco is a song that holds a creative glass that is half-empty. Arrangements contain sounds that were previously utilized in their albums like Dus and Cash. To add to the creative-lacking and non-evocative arrangements, the melody holds no catch value either. Sukhwinder Singh performs well, as usual, but the singer is only as good as the song he is given, right? Not to mention, the constant repetition of the ‘Dard-E-Disco’ refrain will begin to test even the most patient of nerves. Singers Marianne, Nisha, and Caralisa Monteiro form a female chorus to back Sukhi. Any guess as to what the chorus sings? “Dard-E-Disco…Dard-E-Disco.” NEXT!

And those Gods are beginning to grin once again. Deewangi Deewangi is a treat for everyone to shake a leg to. This exciting dance number is animatedly lit with the addictive tune of a fargo synth, which paves the way for a colorful number one would expect from a Farah Khan film – very Yash Rajish. Although V-S invigorate the composition with a lot of modern instruments the piece does carry the intended nostalgia, which is felt through the musical interims via the strings. The vocal cast includes Shaan, Udit Narayan, Rahul Saxena (Indian Idol talent), Shreya Ghoshal, and Sunidhi Chauhan. Rahul, albeit in a very brief appearance, appears as the misfit of the group – his timid vocals don’t match the power and energy that has been exulted by the other singers. Although the infectious number could have done away with the English lyrics throughout, the piece is still extremely enjoyable and will be a pure treat to savor on screen – especially since SRK will be going wild after a long time in this number. Folks, treat yourself to some unadulterated fun and “put your hands up in the air and sing OM SHANTI OM.”

Ah, and this is where the real nostalgia kicks in. Main Agar Kahoon reminds us of some of the timeless romantic melodies heard throughout the 70s, rendered most often by the great Moh’d Rafi – perhaps that’s why V-S roped in Sonu Nigam to render this tender orchestral piece. Is it just a coincidence that Sonu sings a Moh’d Rafi tune…and the film happens to be about reincarnation? But Anyways…the song begins with a heavy orchestral flute, lined by the staccato play of an acoustic guitar. This intro slivers underneath the vocals throughout the piece. In addition, we hear lots of pianist renditions, which are nicely balanced by a very varied ensemble of percussion. Although the melody brings us remembrance of what melody once was decades ago, it does not particularly embody a melody that has been used to its fullest potential. However, the duet between Sonu Nigam and Shreya Ghoshal (arguably the greatest duet combination of the new millennium) makes this song worth keeping on your playlist. In fact, while I was listening to this piece, it was amidst a stormy, very dark, yet very peaceful night – creating the perfect atmosphere for such a romantically haunting composition. All in all, this is a very commendable performance by Vishal and Shekhar.

V-S put us in a time machine, taking us back to the 60s and 70s where we experience a very lively Dhoom Tana. Although V-S had gone back in time to do arrangements before (‘Kyon Aaga Peeche’ from the film Golmaal – Fun Unlimited), they’ve never done something to this extent. With this composition, V-S have single-handedly proven that they are amongst the most perceptive and versatile composers India has. From the instruments used, the melody structuring, right down to the fine variations in singing style, V-S have successfully created a sense of Déjà vu for any listener who is familiar with the sounds of yesteryear. Abhijeet and Shreya Ghoshal also deserve a pat on the back for seamlessly mixing with the style and genre that V-S have brought back decades later. Javed Akhtar plays his role well as the lyricist. Verdict: It’s as if Laxmikant, Pyarelal, and R.D. Burman rose from the dead to compose this track!

Flash-forward to 2007 and Vishal-Shekhar stop on a dime to create a heart-wrenching composition featuring one of the greatest voices today – Rahat Fateh Ali Khan. The piece under the microscope is Jag Soona Soona Lage. Although V-S use one steadily arranged rhythm throughout the piece, it’s done with intent, purpose, and care. I’m a firm believer that an arranger/composer (you can’t really use those words interchangeably anymore in Bollywood) need not mix a variety of rhythms or raags into a piece to create creative quality – rather, if a single constructive rhythm contains quality in itself, it may very well be fitting to use that one rhythm throughout – and this is EXACTLY what Vishal-Shekhar do, and they take full advantage of it.

The somber, yet seductive rhythm paves a path upon which RFAK can put down his gut-wrenching vocals, which he has done superbly! Of course I don’t want to skip over Richa Sharma’s brilliant introduction, as she pours her heart out in her signature Punjabi folk style, rendering lyrics (Punjabi) by Kumaar. Apart from the steady rhythm and RFAK’s magnificent vocalization, V-S try not to touch their creation any more, and rightfully restrict to just pouring a little string under the vocals for instrumental support. And if you wonder why I haven’t been giving much attention to Javed Akhtar throughout the album, it’s because I was waiting for him to write a song just like this – soulful…sad…exquisite. He writes on a man’s desolation…a man’s loss…a man’s cry. And my goodness how he delivers! Verdict: After ‘Ajab Si’ took away the Gold in breath-taking fashion, ‘Jag Soona Soona Lage’ comes in a close second.

Ok, now Vishal-Shekhar are just plain showing off! Dastaan-E-Om Shanti Om is the perfect culmination to a truly versatile soundtrack. For the very first-time, Vishal-Shekhar give us an orchestral piece – but it’s not a conventional orchestral piece by any means. By using a slight rock influence to serve as the arranged base, V-S build upon it with various orchestral elements like strings, orchestral flute, harp, oboe etc. The song is based off of the unforgettable classic ‘Ek Haseena Thi’ from the film Karz. Shaan’s rendition will put a chill down your spine, while Javed Akhtar builds upon the pre-conceived lyrics, keeping in line with the haunting effect of this themed piece. This piece, as all orchestral pieces, can only truly be appreciated once you listen to it for yourself. No critique or review of mine will be able to sum up the effect this piece had on me. I urge you.

The final five tracks comprise of four remixes and one theme piece. The remixes are quite ordinary, and I will avoid wasting my time discussing them at any length. However, the Om Shanti Om Theme Music is a petite pianist rendition of the theme music heard in Dastaan-E-Om shanty Om and other tracks throughout the soundtrack. It will be a soothing experience to hear it played in the backdrops of the film.

Nobody will be as relieved as I was when I heard Om Shanti Om. Why? Because it’s been since early 2005, after the release of soundtracks like Shabd and Home Delivery that V-S have been able to finally get back on the horse and show us what they are really capable of. With Om Shanti Om, the energy, the quality, the passion, the urge to be creative has all suddenly rushed back into the heads of these extremely talented young MDs.

For most people, composing under such high expectations and for such a huge film, especially after it was initially offered to Rahman the Great, would spell disaster, as they’d probably crack under the pressure. But not only have V-S proven themselves in terms of musical ingenuity and quality, they have shown us the confidence, the poise, and the ability to step up to the plate and hit a grand-slam when they’re called upon to do so. Oh and I forgot to mention their unbelievable versatility – coming up with something so diverse and well-crafted after releasing a techno-heavy/monotonous album in the form of Cash just a few months prior.

Of course when the film releases, people will all but forget the gentlemen behind the music.

But today is your day V-S. I give you a standing ovation.

Om Shanti Om's Music on iTunes

It is for the first time that a Bollywood film’s music album will be available for full downloads on mobile handsets and digital media including itunes across 23 countries including India, Singapore, UK, US, UAE, Sri Lanka and Malaysia.

Music company T-Series, which holds the music rights of the film directed by Farah Khan, will facilitate the service through its mobile content partner Hungama Mobile.
T-Series will simultaneously launch the music on CDs on the 18th of September.

The announcement will be made in Dubai over the weekend, followed by an announcement in India early next week. T-Series confirmed the development.

“It is true that the music of Om Shanti Om will be released across platforms,” Bhushan Kumar, chairman & managing director of T-Series told Business Standard.

Apart from tie-ups with all the leading telecom service providers in India, Hungama has partnered with several service providers across countries where the music will be made available.

Some of the carriers are UAE-based telecom service providers Du and ETISALAT, UK-based Vodafone, European mobile phone network provider O2, Singapore’s Singtel and US-based Verizon.

Hungama already has tie-ups with around 150 telecom service provider worldwide.

Neeraj Roy, CEO of Hungama Mobile said, “Our aim is to release the music across digital formats globally. Since Om Shanti Om is a much-awaited film starring Shah Rukh Khan, the music will have a massive appeal even overseas.” He added that the price points for music download on handsets will be in line with the respective markets.

For instance, download per song will cost 2-3 dhirams in UAE, while it will cost 1.99 pounds on the O2 network. The downloading price in India is around Rs 25 a song, with additional download costs on mobile handsets.

The additional cost is usually 10 paise per 10 kilobytes and the average size of each song is 500 kilobytes. However, itunes will cost 99 cents.

The pricing for internet downloads varies, as the user can either download the entire album or a few songs.

T-Series and Hungama were the first to introduce fully downloadable songs in India for the mobile handset. This was done for Hrithik Roshan starrer, Krrish. However, Hutch was the only service provider back then.

The mobile music market in India consists of ringback tones, polyphonic tones, truetones, fulltrack downloads and caller ID tunes. It is estimated to be 60 per cent of all digital sales in the world for the next two years, according to PricewaterhouseCooper report.

Music Review - Om Shanti Om : The Power of Love and Music

Om Shanti Om is easily one of the most complete scores by Vishal-Shekhar and Javed Akhtar.

Expectations. Expectations. And some more expectations. This is how one looks forward to the music of Om Shanti Om from which one expects nothing but the best. And why not?

After all:
a) This is the biggest ever film starring Shah Rukh Khan.
b) This is the second directorial venture for Farah Khan who made a smashing debut with Main Hoon Naa.
c) The film has created huge buzz accompanied by immense hype ever since it was launched.
d) Vishal-Shekhar and Javed Akhtar saab are expected to bring on table a massy popular score.
e) Last but not the least, the film travels decades which makes one look forward to variety in the soundtrack.

Farah Khan: I am re-introducing Shah Rukh Khan

Are these expectations met? Well, very much as each of the seven unique tracks bring on a variety that makes Om Shanti Om a winner all the way.

It is a truly unconventional beginning to Om Shanti Om as instead of an expected 'Beat-one-Beat-two' beginning from Vishal-Shekhar, one gets to hear a rather serene 'Aankhon Mein Teri' which turns out to be an extremely soulful hear. On hearing it initially, it is the sheer 'different' factor due to which it takes some time to follow the composition. But once you have heard it closely with lights switched off and no interference around you, 'Aankhon Mein Teri' turns out to be an irresistible piece of melody that lingers on for hours.

There are number of factors which go in making 'Aankhon Mein' a song that would be remembered for time to come. First and foremost it is the re-discovery of Vishal-Shekhar who create an unconventional tune that breaks the norms which they had themselves set for them. Furthermore, Vishal himself writes lyrics for this track which turns out to be a unique experience since it shows the sensitive romantic side of him. But the biggest of all is K.K. who showcases once again that he is THE most versatile singer who we have in the Bollywood musical scene today!

Well, those who love the dance numbers coming from Vishal-Shekhar don't have to wait for long with the arrival of 'Dard-E-Disco'. This is the very track which is much talked about for Shah Rukh Khan.

Khan's 'perfect-six-abs' and unlike 'Aankhon Mein' which grows immensely only after a few hearings, it is an instant hit from the word go. Reminding of the style, rhythm and the funk of 'Kaal Dhamaal' [Kaal], 'Dard E Disco' is a 'jump-on-the-dance-floor' number which has a Persian touch to it even as overall feel of the song stays on to be Western.

From the title of the song, one would have expected 'Dard-E-Disco' to belong to the 80s era with a Mithun hangover it but that's not the case as the song turns out to be pretty contemporary. Sukhwinder Singh is in his element for this track that has some spicy writing by Javed Akhtar. Marianne, Nisha and Caralisa come together for backup vocals who give the song a perfect disco feel. Later in the album arrives the 'remix version' which makes for a justified presence due to the song's theme and keeps the entertainment alive.

One would have expected the graph of the album to at maximum stay steady after 'Aankhon Mein' and 'Dard-E-Disco' but it shoots up amazingly with 'Deewangi Deewangi' which hooks you within first one minute itself. A sure shot chartbuster which could well have been the opening number for the film's promotion, 'Deewangi Deewangi' is what qualifies as a trademark number which could have been lapped up by Yash Raj Films or Dharma Productions.

The coming together of Shaan, Udit Narayan, Shreya Ghoshal, Sunidhi Chauhan and Rahul Saxena (heard in Indian Idol) ensures that there is not a single dull moment in this instant-attention-grabbing track. Boasting of the innocence in melody that was witnessed in the 70s and now presented in the 21st century 'avtar' with a fusion of 'qawalli', 'bhangra' and western arrangements, 'Deewangi Deewangi' that also incorporates the sound of Om Shanti Om will definitely light up the screen when it is played. It's 'Rainbow Mix' only confirms the thought as it helps in consolidating the sound of the song.

If you have ever been in love, you wouldn't have missed out the dancing-couple-on-a-glass-floor gift item that has a sweet sounding tinkling sound which compliments their moves! This is the sound that marks the beginning of 'Main Agar Kahoon' which reminds one of the 60s era when songs like these were in vogue. Picturised on the likes of Rajendra Kumar and Shammi Kapoor, they were mostly sung by Late Mohd. Rafi.

This is the very reason why Sonu Nigam has been roped in to croon 'Main Agar Kahoon' which required the kind of rendition which would succeed in getting you nostalgic about the music of the era gone by. With Shreya Ghoshal in tow who is just the right fit for a song belonging to this genre, 'Main Agar Kahoon' gives a completely different flavor to the album by bringing some 'thehrav' to it after a rocking outing experienced in the last few songs.

Names like Rahat Fateh Ali Khan and Richa Sharma are good enough reasons to expect a quality offering from Vishal-Shekhar in the song 'Jag Soona Soona Lage'. Written by guest lyricist Kumaar, this painful yet mellow track about separation has it's beginning borrowed from the opening sound of 'Main Agar Kahoon'. Both the singers are highly competent in this beautifully written number that shows an altogether different facet of the composer-duo. A track which has a thorough Indian base to it and makes for a passionate outing, expect it to make multiple appearances during the film's narrative.

It's time for the world of 'Tohfa Tohfa Tohfa' [Tohfa] as 'dhols' and 'ghunghroos' come together in unison to create the sound of late 70s and early 80s. With a Lakshmikant-Pyayelal patent all over 'Dhoom Taana', it is only consolidated further as Shreya Ghoshal sings the song in a style that was made famous by yesteryear singer S. Janaki in Jeetendra-Sridevi-Jaya Pradha films. Roping in of Abhijeet too seems to be done with a purpose since it only brings the nostalgia of Kishore Kumar in spite of no conscious effort by the singer to do so.

All through this vintage song, the 'dhol' beats accompanied by the chorus of 'Dhoom Taana' is hard to be missed though there is a shift in mood mid-way with rock-n-roll. Just recently there was news around Deepika Padukone shaking a leg with Sunil Dutt, Jeetendra and Rajesh Khanna, courtesy SFX. Well, 'Dhoom Taana' seems to be just the candidate for that setting! A winner which should definitely have the house on fire as it unfolds on the big screen. Especially watch out for the crescendo towards the song's end.

Finally comes a track which seems to be set in accordance to the reincarnation theme of the film. Set as a tribute to 'Ek Haseena Thi Ek Deewana Tha' [Karz] with even the lyrics taking a cue from the classic track by Lakshmikant-Pyarelal, 'Dastaan-E-Om Shanti Om' is set in exactly the same story telling mode. The styling of this Shaan rendered track follows the same mode as one expects a high voltage dramatic narration when the song is on.

High on orchestra, 'Dastaan-E-Om Shanti Om' is an elaborate number which has a lot to convey through it's lyrics by Javed Akhtar. With its 'mukhda' based on the film's theme music, the song makes an appearance again towards the end of the album. In it's 'remix version' as 'Dastaan - The Dark Side Mix', it is pepped up further with additional arrangements.

Another remix track which takes the album towards its completion is 'Om Shanti Om - Medley Mix' which basically is an amalgamation of all the tracks from the film presented in a 'club-mix' avtar. A good way to wind up the album. Finally comes a minute long theme piece which is titled 'Om Shanti Om - Themes'. Played on a piano, it leaves a lasting impact even as one can revisit the sound in at least half the tracks in the album.

Credit must go to Farah Khan who mixes the commercial elements of the movie with an inherent class which she wanted to lay out in the soundtrack for Om Shanti Om. This is why a fine balancing act is done in the album with hardcore massy tracks like 'Deewangi Deewangi' [best of the lot], 'Dhoom Taana' and 'Dard-E-Disco' presented along with touching tracks like 'Aankhon Mein Teri', 'Main Agar Kahoon' and 'Jag Soona Soona Lage'. And then there is always a 'Dastaan-E-Om Shanti Om' to bring the nostalgia of 'Ek Haseena Thi' [Karz'].
