Abu Dhabi Preview Of ´My Name Is Khan´ Makes Sheikhs Cry!

Probably the first preview show of the much anticipated 'My Name Is Khan' outside Bombay was held two weeks back in Abu Dhabi. It was for the owners of Imagenation which often partners 20th Century Fox in the distribution of its Hollywood ventures in the Middle East and which is also a partner with Fox in MNIK.

Reliable reports have it that the Sheikhs of Imagenation were so moved after watching the film that they were all crying.

MNIK is about a young Muslim man, Rizvan Khan (Shah Rukh Khan), who is out to prove that merely because his name happens to be Khan, it doesn’t make him a terrorist.

Perhaps, spurred on by the response at the private show, the film’s distributors (Fox) and producers Karan Johar and Shah Rukh have decided to hold a premiere of the film in Abu Dhabi on 10th February.

Warsaw excitedly awaits 'My Name Is Khan' world premiere

Shah Rukh Khan posters are up and advance booking for tickets has begun. This Polish capital, home to a large number of 'King Khan' fans, is all set for the world premiere of "My Name is Khan" Feb 12.

To cash in on Shah Rukh's immense popularity in Poland, the distributors 20th Century Fox has selected Warsaw for the world premiere of his latest film, which sees him paired opposite Kajol after eight long years.

Directed by Karan Johar, the film is about Rizwan Khan (Shah Rukh), an autist, who is mistaken for a terrorist while travelling in the US.

The Indian community and Polish Bollywood buffs are thrilled as this will be the first time a Hindi movie will be shown in Poland along with other western capitals and important cities around the globe simultaneously.

"We cannot believe it but still it is going to be a historic day when we can see Shah Rukh's movie on the very first day of its release. Till this day we normally get (to see) Bollywood films which are normally a year old or so with Polish subtitles," said J.J. Singh, president of the Indo-Polish Chamber of Industry and Commerce.

Big posters have been pasted at important corners of the city and a brisk advance booking of the forthcoming film has already started.

"Finally Poland is on the radar for Bollywood movies and luckily both the producer and distributor understand the value of the Polish market. In five years time, when 'Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham' took Poland by surprise in December 2004, we have covered much ground to be acknowledged as serious lovers of Bollywood movies," said Janusz Krzyzowski, president of the India-Poland Cultural Committee.

"This is great news for us Indians. Let us hope many more Bollywood producers will take a cue from Karan Johar's initiative to release their latest film in Poland. The profile of India has changed dramatically since 2004 and now sky is the limit for cooperation between India and Poland," Rajesh Vaishnaw, Indian charge d'affaires, told IANS.

It was the release of "Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham" with Polish sub-titles that made Shah Rukh a household name in Poland. Later, with films like "Main Hoon Na", "Kal Ho Na Ho" and "Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna" among others he almost became synonymous with Bollywood in Poland.

The songs of his movies became instant hits and young girls and boys started pasting his posters in their rooms. Last year a biography of Shah Rukh penned by Anupama Chopra was translated into Polish.

Preity throws her weight behind SRK on Sena attacks

Even as the Shiv Sena workers went on a rampage and tore down posters of Shahrukh Khan's film 'My Name Is Khan' in Mumbai for his comments on Pakistani cricketers, old friend and filmstar Preity Zinta has thrown her weight behind the actor.

''Guyz just for the record.. Shahrukh is the most secular and the fairest guy I know! It’s unfair to judge his movie based on his opinions!'' said Preity on her Twitter.

The actress, who has co-starred with SRK in films like 'Dil Se,' 'Veer Zara', Kal Ho Na Ho' and 'Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna,' also said she loved the man and would defend him if any ''nonsense'' was written about him.

''I do love Karan Johar and Shah Rukh! Both are very dear to me and I will defend them if someone writes nonsense about them!'' tweeted Preity, who is away in Dubai for her birthday.

The damsel is known for publicly speaking her mind and even was awarded the Godfrey Phillips National Bravery Award for being the only witness not to retract in court her earlier statements against the Indian mafia in the 2003 Bharat Shah case.

Shahrukh Khan welcomes Amitabh to his home

The growing proximity between the Bachchans and Shahrukh Khan just got thicker. On Thursday, Shahrukh called up the Bachchans and requested for a print of Rann to kick-start his newly-constructed home theatre at his residence.

Says a source, "Shahrukh specifically wanted to inaugurate his home theatre with a Bachchan starrer. Luckily, Rann was on release this week. So he asked Karan Johar to quickly dial Mr. Bachchan, who put him through the producers of Rann. The producers gladly arranged for a print of Rann to be delivered to Shahrukh's place on Thursday evening."

After watching the film till very late on Thursday night, Shahrukh Khan sent an appreciative sms to the film's producer which read, "Very kind of you to send the film across. Very intense, very topical...good performances all round. The viewpoint is very current."

Apparently, Shahrukh wanted to invite Mr Bachchan to view Rann in his home theatre. Alas! Amitabh Bachchan was in Delhi on Thursday night attending the premiere of Rann.

You would think with his sworn lack of empathy with politics, Big B would run as far away from politicians as possible. Surprisingly, politicians rather than stars dominated the Delhi premiere of Rann on Thursday night.

Those VIPs (very important politicians) who attended the premiere on Thursday night included Yashwant Sinha, L. K. Advani, Sheila Dixit, Sachin Pilot and the current Lieutenant-Governor of Delhi - Tajendra Khanna. Plus, of course, Amar Singh. This was Mr. Bachchan's first politician-dominated premiere in years.

The entire Bachchan parivar was in full attendance, though Jaya arrived separately from the rest of the family. An ever-enthusiastic Vivek Oberoi also saw the film though in a different screening from the Bachchans.

A perception that Rann indulges in serious bashing of the electronic media had the film's leading man Amitabh Bachchan stationed in the Capital for most of Thursday inviting the city's most influential journalists for the premiere.

Most of the who's who of Delhi's press corps melted under the great Bachchan charm. The man himself was baffled by the widespread belief that the film was against the electronic media.

Said Mr. Bachchan on Thursday afternoon, "I'm in Delhi meeting various members of the press trying to understand why Rann is being perceived as being against them. Or why I'm being seen to have issues with the press. Not at all! I've always respected the press."

Tell him the perception of Mr. Bachchan being anti-press goes back to those years in the 1980s when he had banned the press.

Says Mr. Bachchan, "I banned them because they had banned me. But now that's in the past. Writing my blog has made me understand the duties and exigencies of the media much better than before."

Shahrukh Khan has a strange attachment with socks. Read it to believe it!

Bollywood’s numero uno Shahrukh Khan, who is all geared up with his next offering with dear Kajol in ‘My Name is Khan’, has revealed an unknown and quite weird obsession of his. He holds a strange attachment with ………tell you what…….Socks!!! And his fussiness for socks is weirdly weird. Note this:

1. He is so obsessed with his socks that he can miss a flight for them.

2. He doesn’t wear nylon socks with sneakers (at any cost).

3. He must have a good feeling after putting his legs into one. If he doesn’t feel right, he immediately pulls them off.

4. He hates brown socks (any guesses why?)

5. He loathes different-coloured socks. Ok, that’s understandable.

6. And he insists that socks are the only things that bother him in shoots. (The rest he can tackle; no hassles with dialogues or scenes; its’ just socks …socks…socks)

Tell you what; he is a very soxy…oops……sexy actor!

SRK on his upcoming film 'My Name is Khan'

This is the first film Red Chillies is co-producing with Dharma. Any particular reason?
My Name is Khan (MNK) is an expensive film — actually, Karan does not make cheap films. There are two reasons we joined hands: one because I am of the opinion that when you make a film you should try not to pre-sell it, specially if it is a little. Second, I did not want Karan to take a loan for this film and also I wanted to own (even 50%) of a film which is called My Name is Khan! A film like an Om Shanti Om, can be pre-sold , as it is a regular commercial film. But films like say Chak Deor MNK, require a freedom to be made with a free hand, without any commerce in mind.

Is the film a viable project then?
MNK the most expensive film Karan and I have done. A 90-day shoot in the US done within SAG rules (US union rules) with a staff ratio of 60:40 works out at least 20-25 % more expensive. Add at least five to ten recces before the final 90-day schedule began and you know how expensive it can get.

Commercially, of course, it is not a very viable film for the actor, director and actor-producer at this point, as we have not included our fees because then it would be too expensive. So we made it in just the money Fox Star gave us for it. But it’s our film and it’s special. Like the fantastic writer of ‘Iron Man’ Hawk Ostby told me, “Some work you do for business, some you do for love,” so this one is for love.

However, I don’t think the box-office will really be an issue. It will open up very well because this is a film which will work for the class — what we call the multiplex audience as well as the single-screen audience but not for very different reasons either. Actually, one can always give an outstandingly corporate answer as well. The business has worked for Karan and me because the greatest businesses are done in the greatest simplicity. I have never done so many tours for a film — I go to Indore and Lucknow over the next two days. I have done it for big cities but this film has an Islamic aspect so I want to go to the interiors and tell the Muslims to take a look at this part of the film which is part-Islamic. I want the message of the film to reach the largest number of audience. I truly believe that 90% of successful businesses are passion decisions-whatever number-crunching people do in boardrooms, thoughts and ideas and marketing, it is the idea which is the mainstay. And, therefore, no apprehensions . When film-making becomes only business it will make money, but it will not be mind-numbing anymore, it will not be breaking any paths. It has to be a passionate decision and also make some business sense.

Do you see the expense justified?
Absolutely. It was also necessary as MNKis largely a journey film, it needed to look interesting visually or it would just have been in a bus going to wherever. Even in terms of scale this is very different from what Karan has done before. There are no set havelis, no dancers, there is no big costume drama... it is just a story of one man travelling across the continent. So, for Karan to bring in scale in the vision: whether it was with helicopter shots, terrain shots or bike rides it was all necessary to the film. Of course, there were times when I told Karan that we could do a lot of what we did on VFX which would cut the cost, but Karan is not a believer in that. He is a more an on location kind of film-maker. But I am glad that Dharma and Red Chillies are doing MNK together.

You have the juggernaut might of Fox Star, Fox Searchlight and Fox for a huge strategic release across 65 countries, of which many markets are new, many have become opportunities because of your fan following. How does it help?

At a very minuscule level, I hope between Kajol, Karan and me we are able to open up at least two new markets and turn them into traditional markets for our films. Yes, of course, we are premiering at Abu Dhabi where I believe I have some fans as well as Berlin where we show at the film festival and, of course, Germany where we are doing some 50 prints! At this stage, all I want to ensure is that there are three things in my life I would never want to portray wrong — a disrespectful portrayal of a disability (I have been careless once, in Badshah where I portrayed a blind man in a comic way and I feel it was completely wrong in hindsight) or a religion and usage of language in a film.

How convincing is the film’s message?
There are two messages. One, you don’t have to be extraordinary to do extraordinary things. As a matter of fact, you can be less than ordinary. Like in the case of MNK, because the character is afflicted with a disorder — Aspergers. And you don’t have to do great things to become great. Just keep it simple, be true to the original idea and your final product, will be great. Secondly, I think there is an issue where Islam is concerned across the world. There is an image issue and it’s not whether Islam is wrong or right or bad or good. I think it is because a lot of Muslims have not explained what their religion stands for — so you need to send that message. I cannot blame someone for something that they do without understanding why they did it. So I need to explain to people that this wrong impression that you are getting is because of certain “in-your-face” activities of a few people who happen to be Muslims and it is not what Islam stands for.

The message of Islam is that there are only good people and bad people. It is such a simple idea. If you read the Koran you will know that this is what it is and you recognise it in other religions as well and the misinterpreted moments like Jihad and other few wrongly interpreted terminologies need to be explained in a nice and simple way. The film is not an image-building film for Islam but a message to say this is what Islam stands for which is goodness and humanity and all that is encased in the old Karan Johar belief that love conquers all. Like Karan says: If you see it from far it’s a sweet obstacle-ridden love story. You come up close and you realise that there are layers in it — of Islam, autism, disability , subtle racial discrimination...

My Name is Khan has a lot riding on me: Karan Johar

Marketing, structuring and pitching a films’ release has to be done with creativity and intelligence. In fact, we are still gaining ground in the world of marketing and many movies are still marketed in a wrong manner. There are two important factors: one is structure the film to demographics and secondly, understand the various tools to be used to leverage that demographic. You have to know where you core audience is, where it lies and how to achieve it. Evolutionary changes like social networking sites must also be understood and leveraged for certain urban-content films.

Critically, there is still a huge audience in the heart of the country that gives single screens a tremendous amount of business, a fact we had started denying, for no particular reason, believing that multiplexes
are everything.

Multiplex is just a glamorous term. There is still a large India whose thinking and sensibilities have not changed dramatically and we should not deny its existence.

In colloquial film parlance, audience is divided into A, B and C class. But we have a limited understanding of how to reach these markets. I think we did a better job a decade ago, catering to them. Today, we have stopped visiting single screens because we have stopped caring about them.

Because of the strong Islamic content in My Name is Khan, there is a connect for a large Muslim audience which, I feel, must watch this film and it is up to us to reach out to reach out to them effectively. It is about goodness and humanity, both universal concepts. And though, the story is based in the US and may have an international texture, its core and gut is Indian, which is why the pan-Indian audience.

Take a film like 3 Idiots, which is a pan-India film and can reach out to every home and audience. I think what Aamir did was clever... in that he connected to the core root of the country because the tonality of the film is far more pan-India then even the content. Its tone and texture was fantastically universal and it needed that kind of
connect. Something Aamir did so with Ghajini as well.

SRK ties up with Centuryply

Centuryply, the king of the plywood industry, joined hands with the Badshah of Bollywood Shah Rukh Khan at a recent meet-and-greet programme in Mumbai, to reveal the secret behind being the undisputed leader for the last two decades, with the strength to go on.

The brand has chosen the glamourous Bollywood industry to create a niche in the lifestyle segment as well — Centuryply is enamoured with the charisma of SRK and have partnered with one of his movies earlier. Now, taking the same trend ahead, they have partnered with the biggest film of 2010 — Dharma Productions and Red Chillies My Name Is Khan.

My Name Is Khan is a movie wherein the protagonist goes through various ordeals in life to achieve the unattainable. Rizwan Khan, a Muslim man from India, moves to San Francisco and lives with his brother and sister-in-law. Rizwan, who has Asperger’s, falls in love with Mandira. After September 11, 2001, Mandira is devastated and they split. To win her back, he embarks on a touching and inspiring journey across America. Rizwan Khan’s strength to go on through every upheaval exhibits the spirit that resembles the making of Centuryply, the leader. Both cases show leaders with the strength to go on. Sanjay Agarwal, Jt MD, Centuryply, said, “The spirit of Rizwan Khan in this movie has strengthened our faith, that if you are true towards your goal, nothing can stop you from achieving it. Everything else becomes meaningless as long as the fortitude is to reach the destination. The same attitude has brought us to the pinnacle and has kept us there.”

Further commenting on this association, Abhra Banerjee, VP, marketing, Centuryply, said, “The undying spirit of Mr Khan in this movie is what appeals the most and has a strong resemblance with our brand Centuryply. The brand Centuryply demonstrates the statement ‘Never Say Die’ in its mannerism and this is the spirit that the team lives by. This is the second time that we are associating with SRK and hope to keep this association in future as well.”

Bollywood’s megastar Shahrukh Khan’s lifelike wax figure was reportedly unveiled at renowned Madame Tussauds Wax Museum in Hollywood (USA) today. Filmfare winner Shahrukh (Chak De India!), 44, is the first Bollywood star to be inducted into this Museum, which boasts of wax figures of celebrities like Audrey Hepburn, Clark Gable, Jennifer Lopez, Nicole Kidman, Johnny Depp, Alfred Hitchcock, Steven Spielberg, Beyonce, David Beckham, etc.

Museum calls Shahrukh’s induction as “historic addition” and adds that it “symbolizes a coming together of the world''s two great film centers, Hollywood and Bollywood”. Shahrukh, who is said to have starred in over 70 movies and is also a producer and television presenter, was named by Newsweek magazine as one of the 50 most powerful people in the world. His "My Name is Khan"(Karan Johar) is set for release on February 12.

Welcoming coming closer of Hollywood-Bollywood with this induction, Indo-American statesman Rajan Zed, in a statement in Nevada (USA) today, said that the collaboration of world’s two major film industries on various aspects was a step in the right direction. Cinema was a powerful medium and Hollywood-Bollywood engagement, if utilized positively, could bring East and West closer, Zed, who is chairperson of Indo-American Leadership Confederation, added.

The unveiling today was reportedly accompanied by a performance of America’s Bollywood dance troupe Ishaara, a recent America's Got Talent contender.

Shiv Sena targets Shahrukh, Maha government promises protection

Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan was targeted by Shiv Sena for advocating the cause of Pakistani cricketers in the third season of Indian Premier League (IPL) but the Maharashtra government Friday promised to protect the actor.

Shiv Sena activists burnt SRK's effigies and the posters of his upcoming movie 'My Name Is Khan'.

Minister of State for Home Ramesh Bagwe told reporters that the government was ready to provide Shah Rukh security if he desired it.

The minister also vowed to give 'full security' to all the players in the IPL matches.

The Shiv Sena hit out at the actor, who is also the Kolkata Knight Riders co-owner, after he said that he would have picked a Pakistani player for IPL matches if his team had a slot.

The IPL teams' failure to select even a single Pakistani cricketer has raised a storm in Pakistan.

Attacking Shah Rukh for espousing the cause of Pakistani players, Shiv Sena Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Raut said if the actor was so keen on them, 'he could go play his matches in Lahore, not in India'.

'Pakistan has been blatantly indulging in terror activities and killing our innocent people. Sena is firm in not allowing Pakistani players on our soil,' Raut told reporters.

Taking the issue further, Thane Shiv Sena leader Eknath Shinde announced that no film of Shah Rukh would be screened in the district.

'Since Shah Rukh Khan has hurt the sentiments of the people by his utterances, we have decided that his films will not be exhibited in any cinema or multiplex in the entire Thane district,' said Shinde.

Shah Rukh's latest movie, 'My Name Is Khan', is due for global release Feb 12.

Shah Rukh had said in Ahmedabad Wednesday that there was a need to create an environment where IPL franchisees could recruit Pakistani players with ease.

He said that his team had exhausted its quota of foreign players by picking up Shane Bond. Otherwise, he would have loved to have Pakistanis in the Kolkata Knight Riders.

In a related development, Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray lashed out at industrialist Mukesh Ambani for his views in London that Mumbai belonged to the whole country.

Saying that the industrialist was 'not in his senses' when he made the statement, Thackeray said that 'Mumbai belonged to Marathis' as much as Reliance Industries belonged Mukesh Ambani.

Jackie Chan might make his Bollywood debut with SRK's Ra1

If Shah Rukh has his way, Jackie might make B-Town debut in Ra1

Martial arts legend Jackie Chan will make his Bollywood debut with Shah Rukh's Ra1. Sources from Red Chillies reveal they are in talks with Chan for the superhero action film.

If Chan comes on board, expect to see major action scenes featuring him and SRK in the action-thriller directed by Anubhav Sinha.

Ra1 will be based in Miami and Hollywood crew will being used for the film. Cinematography is by Ueli Steiger ("The Maiden Heist"), while David Benullo ("Shadow Man") is screenwriter. According to the buzz, Jackie will play the role of a scientist who helps Shah Rukh fight off the bad guys. A source says, "They are hoping Jackie agrees to be part of the film. The production house has sent him a detailed script with the action scenes and a brief synopsis of his character.

Shah Rukh's son Aryan is a huge fan of action movies and Ra1 is being made keeping in mind what kids his age want to see in a film of this genre. Since Jackie is the best in the business when it comes to performing and executing fight scenes involving martial arts, they want to have him on this film."

Chan has worked with Mallika Sherawat in the 2005 release The Myth. However, over the years, the actor has become extremely choosy about his work. His last release -- The Spy Next Door that opened to mixed reviews and didn't do good business at the box-office.

Anubhav Sinha refused to comment on the development.

Shah Rukh Khan is 'scared' of getting into relationships

Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan has said he is "scared" of getting into relationships and finds himself socially and emotionally inept.

"There are days I feel lonely. I have never gotten into relationships, because I'm scared to. I lost my parents, so now I don't like to lose relationships," Shah Rukh has been quoted as saying in GQ India' magazine's latest issue.

About his reported uncomfortable relationships with contemporaries and seniors in Bollywood, where he has spent nearly two decades, Shah Rukh said his fall-out with Salman Khan was personal and not work-related.

"With Aamir (Khan) and Amitabh Bachchan, there is no fall-out," the 44-year-old actor said.

And while talking about his friend filmmaker-choreographer Farah Khan, Shah Rukh said, "I'll be honest about Farah. Her work defines her. None of us owe anything to anyone. I always believe that."

To a question on what has he learned in the film industry, he said, "Everyone doesn't understand my humour. Happiness comes on a successful Friday. And all this happens if you're happening. The industry is the nicest place to be because it's straightforward."

"If you believe you are a means to an end, you will always be successful in this industry. If you believe you are the end, you will feel cheated, unhappy, let down," King Khan said.

His name is Khan and apparently he loves sex! You heard right! During a recent interview, Shahrukh Khan was asked about the alleged "mature love story" in his upcoming movie "My Name is Khan" and this is what he had to say:

"Oh, you’re asking about sex? Be more specific. Yes of course, there’s plenty of sex in the movie. My character does it everywhere. In the kitchen, the hall, the drawing room — everywhere. That’s what the movie is all about."

Wow!

We guess movie fans are in for a real treat with this one! And here we were thinking "MNIK" was going to be about terrorism! Looks like we were completely wrong!

But hold on a minute! Not so fast! "My Name is Khan" producer Karan Johar quickly went into damage control mood when he heard what King Khan had said and explained the joke:

"No way. I clarify right here that there is no such thing happening in the movie. It’s a love story with a twist, that’s all."

Well after hearing what Shahrukh had to say we can't wait to see what 'twist' Johar is talking about!

♥ To have SRK down on his knees is many a girl’s dream, but check out who got the special attention ♥

Shah Rukh Khan went down on his knees and proposed to a girl dressed up as a bride at an event at Ahmedabad yesterday. Obviously, the girl does not plan to ever remove the ring

Shah Rukh Khan got married again yesterday at a five-star hotel in Ahmedabad to 20-year-old Tillana Desai. Wait, don’t jump to conclusions, it was a mock wedding that SRK impulsively thought up to pacify the girl who is in love with him. SRK was promoting his film My Name is Khan and didn’t think he’d run into a girl, dressed up as a bride, who also wanted her name to be Khan!

Our source said, “At his film’s event, SRK had to meet people with unusual love stories. Among the crowd, was 20-year-old Tillana Desai, who had come dressed in full bridal finery. When SRK asked her about her love story, she said she had been in love with a guy since she was seven but can’t marry him as he is already married.

When SRK asked her who the guy was, he was surprised to know that he was the man in question. She also said that she only uses the products that he endorses and refuses to buy anything else. The girl insisted that SRK should marry her. SRK used his million-dollar charm to overcome the awkwardness. The girl had even brought a ring with her. He went down on his knees and slipped the ring on her finger, saying that this is their rehearsal for the wedding.”

The lucky girl is on cloud nine. To have SRK down on his knees is many a girl’s dream, but she was the one who ended up with the special attention. We spoke to Tillana Desai, who gushed, “SRK was really cute. Usne mujhe yeh wedding ring pehnai. I told him that I’ve been crazy about him for years. Unfortunately, he is married. I guess he thought that my love story was very unusual and that’s why he said that we should get married and gave me this ring.

I will never remove the ring and I am glad that he accepted my love and admiration for him. He even asked me about my family and I told him that they could not make it. However, I invited him to my house for dinner, but I guess he was busy.”

Shahrukh Khan marries a 20-yr-old fan

Puts a ring on her finger

She has been in love with him since she was seven, has watched all his films, and she dressed up as a bride at a five-star hotel in Ahmedabad where Shahrukh Khan came to promote his upcoming film My Name Is Khan.

It was a unique promotional event where people who had unusual love stories were called in to narrate their tales. When the 20-year-old Tillana Desai came on stage, she said she’s loved someone since her childhood but can’t marry him as he’s already married.

When asked who the man was, SRK was shocked to know that Tillana has been in love with him for most of her life. The besotted fan then took out a wedding ring and asked SRK to marry her.

Courteous enough to not break her heart, SRK obliged by staging a mock marriage with Tillana. He bent down on his knee and slid the ring into Tillana’s finger. The girl was simply ecstatic, to say the least.

“I will never remove the ring and I am glad that he accepted my love and admiration for him,” Tillana later told a tabloid.

SRK wants to be a good actor!

Aamir Khan is not the only Bollywood superstar who goes home and picks up a book instead of the television remote. Shah Rukh Khan is also a voracious reader. King Khan truly believes that if you want to be a good actor, you have got to be a keen reader. For his latest film My Name is Khan in which his character has Asperger’s syndrome and also shades of autism, SRK read several books on the subjects to keep himself updated.

The Bollywood Badshah also confesses that he often finds himself reading several books at a time. “I read everything from news magazines to kids books, even graphic novels,” says he. And he also enjoys telling his children, Aryan and Suhana stories of Akbar and Birbal. “I’m a huge Birbal fan,” confesses SRK. “Some ill-informed sorts have reduced the far-thinking Birbal to some kind of court jester in Emperor Akbar’s court. The fact of the matter is that Birbal is actually one of the sharpest.

Actor Shahrukh Khan had a taste of Gujarat as he had gone to the city of Ahmedabad for the promotion of his film ‘My Name Is Khan’. The crowd went crazy on seeing him and amongst loud cheers he jigged and danced to numbers from his films. There was a contest held for choosing his die hard fan and there was one fan who even went to propose to Shahrukh to marry her.

The Baadshah was very cool and relaxed and he jokingly remarked that he could keep a couple of wives if he so desired. Then he very chivalrously bent on his knees and gifted the fan a ring. Such is the charm of King Khan that even the organizers were much impressed. SRK was thoroughly enjoying himself as he sang and danced with much enthusiasm.

Ahmedabad is a city with a mixed aroma of the yesteryears and modern day high definition life. This flavor was enjoyed by Shahrukh and as he promoted his film in a novel way by buying the first ticket to a Cineplex which had subsidized rates as a bait for the audiences. There are many novel ways of film promotion these days and as usual, SRK did it in his own special way.

Playing Rizwan in 'My name is Khan' was a challenge: SRK

Bollywood super star Shah Rukh Khan on Wednesday said enacting the character of an autistic person in 'My Name is Khan' was a challenge for him.

"I think it is a very new and difficult concept. I play Rizwan Khan, a person suffering from autism. I prepared well for the role. I hope I have done well."

"Of course, I have taken some cinematic liberties with it," he added.

The 44-year-old actor said when he, Karan (Johar) and Kajol come together they think about what new could be done, and that is how 'My Name Is Khan' has evolved.

Shahrukh Khan and his records

Shah Rukh Khan is all set to make records this year. Seems like, things are shaping up in a positive way in camp Shah Rukh. There is news and it is quite some news for the Khans. Well the news is that a crater on the moon has been named after him. To which the actor has tweeted on Twitter, the new age micro blogging site “also went to check the crater on the moon.”

Then he adds “cheesy humour…i have been telling everyone today…my name is chand.” Hope the humor is seriously not that cheesy or he did not mean that way the kind it sounds. Nevertheless he is the first from Bollywood to have achieved something like that. He is sharing this honor with the likes of Leonardo Da Vinci, Jules Verne, Sir Isaac Newton and Julius Caesar!

He further adds “also the good thing with the moon property is no municipal taxes…but alas very few neighbours too…” which definitely shows his bland humor of course. Then there is another record that of having maximum followers or visitors following him on Twitter. He has so far some 93,456 followers following him and that too within a month’s time! Isn’t that amazing? Way to go Shah Rukh. All the best form all of us.

Star on Moon: Crater named after Shah Rukh Khan

Bollywood has finally made it to the moon. It is making its presence felt 4 lakh km away on the lunar surface in an area close to where the first men on the men, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin, landed on July 20, 1969.

The International Lunar Geographic Society, a New York-based organization devoted to the study of the moon, has declared that a lunar crater in the moon's Sea of Tranquillity has been christened after Shah Rukh Khan. This has been approved by the International Astronomical Union, which has a final say with regard to the naming of craters on the moon. The crater ``has been given the honorary designation as the Crater S R Khan on the occasion of Mr Khan's 44th birthday'' on November 2, 2009, the society said.

According to the society, the crater was named following a deluge of petitions from Shah Rukh's admirers from India and around the world. Incidentally, one of his dedicated admirers has already presented him with a piece of the moon by buying him land there.

With a crater named after him, Shah Rukh now joins the ranks of eminent personalities like Nobel laureate C V Raman, father of the Indian space programme Vikram Sarabhai, father of the Indian nuclear programme Homi Bhabha and other luminaries like Meghnad Saha after whom craters have been named.

The decision has triggered a mixed response within the scientific community, with the father of the Indian moon mission Krishnaswamy Kasturirangan supporting it, but president of the National Space Society, Suresh Naik, describing it as ``shocking''. In another vein, a young schoolgirl commented, ``I think another crater on the moon should be named after Amitabh Bachchan, since he is also a great actor.''

Secretary of the Indian chapter of the Moon Society, Pradeep Mohandas, shared Kasturirangan's view. ``I think it is not a bad idea since it reflects the thinking of the new generation of young Indians,'' he said.

Kasturirangan told TOI on Sunday from New Delhi that Shah Rukh is extremely popular and a symbol of national pride.

``I do see a rationale behind this decision. He is a kind of ambassador for India and this reflects the way India views him,'' he said.

Shah Rukh's link with the space programme goes back to May 2001, when the last man who stood on the surface of the moon, Eugene A Cernan, during a visit to Mumbai invited the actor to Nasa's Johnson Space Centre in Houston, Texas. The actor sat in a model of the lunar vehicle which was brought over by Cernan. Shah Rukh acted in `Swades', the bulk of which was shot in Nasa's Kennedy Space Centre in Florida.

The S R Khan Crater is part of the Arago crater group, named for Francois Jean Dominique Arago, a Catalan-French mathematician, physicist, astronomer and politician who lived from 1786 to 1853. It is the largest of the main Arago crater's four satellite craters and rests in the Sea of Tranquillity, directly south of the main crater.

SRK and I are not 16: Kajol

Kajol may be feeling too overworked having three releases this year but her fans are more than delighted. Her first film releasing this year is Karan Johar’s My Name is Khan opposite her DDLJ hero Shah Rukh Khan. “But this is not a cliched love story,” the actress tells BT about the film which has been tailor-made for her and SRK...

Karan Johar’s My Name is Khan, Kireet Khurana’s Toonpur Ka Superhero and Siddharth Malhotra’s Love You Maa (tentative title) you have three releases in 2010!
God, it is shocking, even scary sometimes. I didn’t realise that I have been working like a dog, which I swore never to do.

Expectations from MNIK are sky-high considering it has one of the best Bollywood screen couples — SRK and you?
As far as expectations go, you can never work for expectations. You have to work against them. My Name is Khan is a very special film. Karan, SRK and I have worked very hard to make it a good film. We’ve put in our hundred per cent and we hope everyone else thinks so too.

SRK said that when the two of you work together, you’ll invariably look out for each other as friends...
SRK and I have the kind of friendship where we do look out for each other. I’m glad we have that kind of friendship. Yes it is true that when we work together, he is concerned about my performance; and I’m concerned about his. We’re on the same level and we often tell each other, ‘Listen you can add this to what you’re doing,’ and vice versa. Our takes aren’t very different from each other.

Was Khan a more difficult film to make because it deals with sensitive issues like the Asperger’s syndrome and even some socially relevant ones?
MNIK is just a ‘more’ film, if you know what I mean. It is not a clichéd love story per se. SRK and I are not 16. So we’re not bubbly teenagers any more. We have progressed to another level and our performances and the film has been tailor-made for that level.

Aamir Khan, SRK, Salman Khan, Saif Ali Khan... you’ve done films with the top grade Khan level; who’s next?
Oh God, my choice of film has never depended on the hero. In fact, you will see that some of my categorical mistakes had nothing to do with the hero in it. I think I’d like to continue doing good work. I’d like to do interesting scripts. No run-of-the-mill stuff for me. I also want to do films in my time. Just the thought that I have three releases coming up this year has tired me. I need a break really bad.

My Name Is Khan came to Niranjan Iyengar accidentally

My Name Is Khan is indisputably the most-awaited movie of the year. The music of the movie is already creating waves all-over especially ‘Sajda’ sung by the melodious Rahat Fateh Ali Khan and Richa Sharma.

Nonetheless, the lyrical beauty of the song can’t be ignored either and due credit goes to Niranjan Iyengar who was recently appreciated for ‘Shukran Allah’ (Kurbaan). Another song titled 'Noor E Khuda’ has been penned down by this talented lyricist.

However, My Name Is Khan didn’t come easily in his kitty. Adds Niranjan, “I never gave a serious thought to the career as a lyricist. And My Name Is Khan fell in my kitty accidentally. I had written lyrics for My Name Is Khan much before Kurbaan.”

Niranjan goes on to add,” I used to have frequent discussions with Karan Johar over the lyrics. And one fine day KJO called me to write dummy lyrics for a song which turned out to be ‘Sajda’. The lyrics were liked by one and all and that’s when I was officially appointed as a lyricist.”

WATCH: IPL auction was wrong, says SRK

Speaking to NDTV, Shah Rukh Khan says he believes the Pakistani players should have been chosen. But, he went on to say that since there were issues between India and Pakistan, the IPL should have handled the issue better.

Pak players should have been picked up for IPL 3: SRK

As a perceived snub to Pakistani players by the Indian Premier League spark a spat between the neighbouring countries, Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan, an IPL franchisee himself, believes they should have been picked.

"I truly believe they (Pakistan players) should have been chosen," Khan, co-owner of Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), said.

Khan, however, said that since "some issues" were involved the matter could have been handled by the IPL "respectfully".

No Pakistani player was bought by the eight Indian clubs during an auction on Tuesday for the third edition of the glitzy IPL despite the Pakistan team being the reigning world champions in the Twenty20 format of the cricket tournament.

Rooting for the Pakistani players, Khan said they are the best T20 players in the world. "They are the champions, they are wonderful but somewhere down the line there is an issue and we can't deny it," he told a news channel.

Khan said it was humiliating to him as a KKR owner that no one bid for the Pakistani players despite them being put up for auction.

"We are known to invite everyone. We should have. If there were any issues, they should have been put on board earlier. Everything can happen respectfully," he said.

"Everyday we blame Pakistan, everyday Pakistan blames us. It is an issue," Khan, who had five players from Pakistan playing for KKR in IPL's first edition, said.

Khan felt that the youth should circumvent all that is said about India and Pakistan by the politicians and say, "It (Pakistan) is a great neighbour to have. We are great neighbours, They are good neighbours. Let us love each other."

"Let me be honest. My family is from Pakistan, my father was born there and his family is from there," he said.

They were spotted having immense fun on the show. SRK was keen to back Himesh’s team as he cracked in his own style saying- his IPL team has been loosing all the time, which he does not like and so he wants to win here.

Shankar was amazed to hear Rehman a contestant who sang ‘Mola Mere Lele Meri Jan’ and said ‘if we would have found him earlier then we could have definitely given him a chance to sing a song inMy Name Is Khan’.

SRK came into his generous self and gifted his expensive watch to a contestant, Vinit as a birthday gift. If SRK was backing Himesh and enjoying; so was Karan on Shreyas’ side. It was a touching sight to see Shahrukh being emotional when Sheraya’s sang ‘Tujhe Mein Rab Diktha Hai’.

Not only this SRK removed his jacket to perform on ‘Dard- E- Disco’ song sung by Shreya’s team and gave a fantabulous performance. Himeshs’ team was no less; they made SRK dance on ‘Ishq Kamina’ too.

'My Name Is Khan' distributors undeterred by '3 Idiots' success

The Aamir Khan starrer has set a challenge for new releases. But bosses of Fox STAR studios, distributors of Shah Rukh Khan's forthcoming film " My Name Is Khan", are undeterred and hope to hit the bull's eye with the movie.

"We've always been hugely excited about 'My Name Is Khan' and we remain excited. It is fair to say that '3 Idiots' has had success but as far as 'My Name...' is concerned, we believe that it's a film to cut across all demographics," Vijay Singh, CEO of Fox Star, told IANS on phone from Mumbai.

"It has a wide appeal. It also has a very strong talent base which is coming together after eight years. It's a very powerful, emotionally engaging film," he added.

Directed by Karan Johar, "My Name is Khan" features Shah Rukh as an unconventional hero Rizvan Khan, who embarks on a journey across America to win back the love of his life, played by Kajol. It shows how, along the way, his personality touches the lives of many and inspires a nation.

The film marks the coming together of Johar, Shah Rukh and Kajol after nine years after their last outing "Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham" (2001).

The movie has also been in news for Fox Star's acquisition of its global rights reportedly for $20 million.

The movie will be marketed and distributed by Fox Star in India, in the US by its sister company Fox Searchlight and in the rest of the world by parent group 20th Century Fox International.

Throwing more light on "My Name...", Singh said: "'My Name Is Khan' is an amazing love story which has a very epic sweep to it. And of course it's got an amazing cast and crew.

"We are hugely excited and we are going to have a worldwide release on Feb 12. It will be the widest Bollywood release ever out of India."

Asked about the number of the prints, Singh said: "It's too early (for figures) as the release is in February. But rest assured given the working progress, it will be the widest release across the widest number of countries and prints."

The movie will open in theatres in India and over 40 countries including the US, Canada, Britain, Australia, New Zealand and the Middle East, according to Johar' Dharma Productions.

Asked about the budget of the venture, Singh promptly replied: "No. We don't go down there... We don't give our numbers."

He also refused to divulge details on the marketing strategies for the movie saying, "it's probably too early on giving out some of the information."

The movie is coming a few days before Valentine's Day. Asked why, Singh said: "The very fact that Shah Rukh and Kajol are almost like the jodi of the decade. They represent the best of love pairs in Bollywood.

"So here's a love story set against such a big canvas which is coming out very appropriately timed for Valentine's. It's almost like how far will you go for your love."
