I share my sadness only with my children: Shah Rukh Khan

He is rarely seen without his dimpled smile and crackling sense of humour but the 'Badshah of Bollywood' Shah Rukh Khan does have his low phases which he shares only with his children.

The 44-year-old superstar's journey, from TV serial 'Fauji' to his latest 'My Name Is Khan', has gone through ups and downs in his two decade long acting career and he insists that his kids have been his biggest support.

"I like kids. I like company of kids more than adults. I remember when my own children, Aryan was 5 or 6, I shared my biggest depression," Shah Rukh said.

"I don't like to talk to people about my sadness and I think the only people I have spoken to, and that too when they do not understood anything, were Aryan and Suhana. So I sat them down and told them I am really sad while they drooled all over me," he added.

Shah Rukh may have become a huge name but the superstar still enjoys giving autographs and standing with his fans for a click.

Exclusive: Superstar Shahrukh Khan's Inside World

Discovery Travel & Living trailed Shah Rukh Khan for over a year to put together a special ten-part series on the superstar. An exclusive glimpse into the first two episodes – a London vacation & Mumbai 24x7.

Much as I love Mumbai and Delhi and India, I think London would be my next favourite place on earth. I like the weather, the greenness, the cold. Normally I come here for work and holidays but I love coming here. There were two places in the world which my mom wanted me to see, one was Madame Tussauds in London and the other was the Louvre in Paris. So it's the greatest moment and achievement of my life that I am in Madame Tussauds. She would have been very proud.

When I'm in London, I go to Hyde Park to play soccer with my kids and their friends. I don't play unfair. Aryan will cheat a bit but he should not. Since he's playing against the girls, maybe he wants to win but I think he does that in school also which is not good. I think this is his one bad habit that I need to change. You don't cheat and win. You don't lie and win.

You can tell the difference between boys and girls when they are playing. You can spend 20 minutes with the boys and 20 minutes with the girls. You may have fun with the boys but you realise life is best with the women and so I like to be with girls. And I want them to be really tough. At least the girls whom I know, they should be tough and should kick all these idiots around. Guys are a little dumb. I am sorry, I may lose some male fans but the girls rock!

I beat my children, fair and square, when we're playing. I love them the most. I am the gentlest father. I could never ever hurt them in my life. I don't think I love anything in this world more than my children. But I am ready to beat them fair and square – and I am very very thrilled if they beat me. Like I said, I am not talking about competition in films, I am talking about my own children. But it will take them a long long time to beat me.

I like kids; I like the company of kids more than adults. I don't do baby talk with kids. I think they need to be treated like, you know, how you would treat a normal guy and that turns out best.

In a strange sense, as wrong and politically incorrect as it may sound, I like kids how Michael Jackson liked kids. I really understand it. I mean, for years I have understood. Obviously we are from different cultures. We think differently, we behave differently but I fully understand it and appreciate it because I am like that. I can spend the whole day, a whole month in a room full of kids. As a matter of fact, I remember when my own children were small, when Aryan was just five or six, I shared my biggest depression with them. I don't like to talk to people about my sadness and I think the only people I have spoken to and that too when they did not understand anything were Aryan and Suhana. I sat them down and told them I am really sad while they rolled all over me.

One of the fears all big stars have is what happens when all this ends. I think the cutest thing that my kids have made me feel is this: I don't have that fear anymore. I have this fantastic plan when all this ends. I have the hugest thing to look forward – which is just being with my kids. Maybe they won't have time for me though. Well, I will bring them up in such a way that they will bring me to Hyde Park when I am 65 and play football with me.

I can see myself at 72 when my son is giving me the cycle or a wheelchair. And I am convinced that my daughter will take me to Hamleys and say, let's go and buy you a book. Or she'll say, listen, I have got an interview at 5:30 and after that you come and meet me at Waterstone's. She might be 35 that time but I know she will take out time for me. I think it's one of the nicest things that will happen to me.

"Nobody in my house treats me like a star"
SRK was on a year-end vacation to Dubai with his family when we requested a short interview. Though he was on holiday, he agreed and we did this quick Q&A over the phone. Even as he spoke, one could hear kids shouting and yelling in the background – clearly having a great time. Shah Rukh told us that his wife and in-laws had gone out, but he'd preferred to stay back with the kids and their friends.

Excerpts from the interview:

What's it been like, doing this show for Discovery Travel & Living?
Actually I don't understand why people want to see my personal life. But it hasn't been too difficult. If I found the crew intrusive, I'd just tell them and they wouldn't shoot. Like I don't like to be shot while I'm eating, so they didn't do that.

You come across as such a devoted father. But is it really possible for Shah Rukh Khan the star to be a normal dad?
When my kids were much younger, they used to get scared when people would rush up to me. They also found it odd that their classmates referred to me by my name. Today of course they know. But they don't think of me as anyone special. That has to do with my wife actually, nobody at home treats me like a star. My kids wouldn't even see KBC (Kaun Banega Crorepati) regularly on TV when I was hosting it.

I'm a little reclusive. I hate going out. I'd rather not go to a party. Even now, seven-eight of them (kids) are around. Everyone else has gone out but I've stayed back with them.

Even my meetings… I did a meeting with Lalit (Modi) at an amusement park in Austria. We were there for three hours with all the kids in that park. Tomorrow I have a couple of meetings in the Water World park here.

This year I've mostly been home because of my injury so I've been able to spend a lot of time with my kids. It keeps me young. The other day I was with Yashji and he suddenly hugged me and said, 'You're 44 years old but you're just like a kid!'

I know your kids are, well, just kids right now, but is it a foregone conclusion that they will also get into films?
I don't know yaar. They're really into sports. They're playing all the time and look dirty and unkempt. That's the way I like them. It's their choice. They have to be passionate about acting if they want to take it up. Actually we don't even say it as a joke ki bade hoke hero banega.

My son is becoming kinder to me now because he knows how important movies are for me. They like me to do action. I try and select films which will appeal to my children. When I did Chak De! India, I got 30 kids to see the film. They laughed, they clapped – and I knew the film would do well. When people come to me and say, my child sings your song, I know that that particular song will turn out to be a big hit.

You're hardly doing any films these days. There's just My Name Is Khan…
I got injured, and so had a lay off for a year. I'm feeling better now. In February I'm starting Ra.1, which will finish by June-July. Then in July, I might do a small film. In September I start shooting for Don II.

My Name Is Khan is so different. I think audiences outgrow similar kind of film making. Om Shanti Om was an in-your-face commercial movie. Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi was about a regular guy. My Name Is Khan is about an underdog who triumphs. Ra.1 is about a superhero who can fly around. It's a film very close to my heart. It's being done by Anubhav Sinha. I'm also having meetings with Vishal (Bhardwaj) and Anurag Basu. Inshallah, something will come out of these meetings.

'Everybody has a cool van. so my wife said to me, why don't you get yourself a nice van?'
Time starts when I come to a place. I am not bound by time, otherwise I would never manage. I am never on time for meetings and I am very proud of it or at least I am not ashamed of it. I am disorganised about time but I know I manage to meet 85,000 people in a year. Genuinely, I am able to talk to 45 filmmakers in a year. I am able to do three films in a year. I am able to spend great quality time with my children. I am able to give full attention to my wife and my sister. I am able to do everything that I wish to do. So I have actually in a certain sense, conquered time which makes me feel sometimes that I may have conquered death, but that's not going to happen. But I have conquered time.

My wife and kids actually started making me do this (waving to fans outside his house, Mannat). They said these people keep waiting, you should wave out to them when you are at home. So I did. I feel humble, I don't feel any iconic status because of this.

It's not a feeling which you can really express. I show a lot of graciousness and gratitude and say that it makes me feel really good, and it does. It makes me feel wanted, it does. It makes me love, it does. But I don't know how to express it.

This is the closest anyone who does not know me, gets to see me really. And I want them to know that there is nothing special about this. I don't dress up for this occasion and give a speech. If it continues for another ten years, maybe I will start out speaking to people through a megaphone. If I had a choice, I would start dancing out there and let them have a great entertaining evening. I am actually planning to make a little place there so that they can see me better. Put on a little music and do a little dance for them. So that they go back home with some experience.

A van has become a big thing for stars lately. Everybody has a cool van. So my wife said, why don't you get yourself a van? You deserve it. You work very hard. So you must have a nice looking van.

So I had these people, like Dilip Chabbria, they were really sweet and they said that we've always liked you and we have always been wondering what we can do for you. We're gonna design a very cool van for you. So it's very cool, it stretches out. It's really long. I still don't know what to do with the second half of the van. I have a gym. I have a bathroom now which is clean and nice. I can keep my Ralph Lauren towels there, so it is nice. Feels like a star. I have a watch, which I can't read without my glasses. I have my family's picture which is very nice.

I have a computer and the seat moves. So whenever I sit on it and press the button, I feel like I am Don. I can hear the Don music, and if I wear dark glasses, I may have to shoot you if you enter. I have a bed which comes out, but I haven't used that. None of the actresses have agreed to utilise it with me. I have come to the conclusion that it's not the van that makes the man. It's the man who makes the van.

Sometimes, a scene comes in me, goes within. I know I have lost a little bit of myself that day. In every film that I do, there are one or two shots I am very passionate about. Sorry, I may sound silly but I live a part of me in every film. I wake up every morning with this fear that, will there be a day when I'll wake up and find I have nothing more to give? I have done 65 films, so even if I go by one per cent, then I have already given 65 per cent. So I am like, will there be a day when there will be nothing more to give? Will there be a day when I'll be completely hollow and empty? Will there be a day when I will be really attempting to cry and I will cry but nobody will feel it and cry with me? Will there be a day when I will not have a third dimension left?

As per sources, Shah Rukh Khan is to proceed on a two-week vacation anytime (even as you are reading this!), to an undisclosed location, with his wife Gauri and children where they will bring in Christmas and the New Year.

It is believed that after his much deserved vacation, SRK will embark on a publicity blitzbrieg for his upcoming Karan Johar directed, 'My Name Is Khan', co-starring Kajol!

Here comes the touchiest and most loving comment from Karan Johar for Shahrukh Khan’s kids Suhana and Aryan. He calls them his god-children. Not only that, he would love to gift all his films’ negatives to the kids!

Few days back, Karan Johar said in an interview posted in Star Box Office that he can’t do his films without Shahrukh Khan…and his emotional outburst showed how much he cares for SRK. The latest revelation is that Dharma Production negatives will be legally willed on the names ofShahrukh’s kids Suhana and Aryan!

Karan is always all praises for his friend, mentor and favorite actor Shahrukh. He feels that SRK is the biggest star of India and the best indeed! He also has declared that his films are incomplete without SRK.

Karan loves Shahrukh Khan and his family so much that he reveals his wish of mentioning Aryan’s and Suhana’s name in his will and wants to give them the negatives of Dharma Production films. He confirms that he gets very well along with Gauri and the kids. He adds that SRK’s family is so close that he feels at home there. He is like a member ofShahrukh’s family. For him, working with Shahrukh is like two brothers working together. In his own words, “Two brothers start and maintain companies and make films. We do what it takes to keep our families and work units together.”

On the other hand, the recent reports say that Shahrukh feels he is complete with Karan and his films!

Wow…at times when celebrities are seen fighting within the industry, isn’t it just so wonderful to have so much of brotherly love between KJo and SRK? What do you say?

SRK – a 'hands on' dad

At a recently held Bollywood premier — that was also attended by Shahrukh Khan and his family, the guests witnessed a cutest scene there.

Shah Rukh who is loved by more than three-fourth of the fans because of his parenthood, held daughter Suhana's hand while he waited for wife Gauri and friend Sussane Khan to finish powdering their noses. Those who saw young Suhana couldn't help laughing about how the little one was aping mom Gauri in her dressing style.

However, it was her dad Shahrukh – the Badshah Khan of Bollywood, with whom she shares a terrific strong bonding. The little girl left her dad only to make a quick trip to loo. However, the moment she was back she rushed straight to him. And, of course, SRK was delighted.to have her into his arms.

The doting dad is known for his simplicity and decency loves to spends every minutes with his family and kids.

SRK wants kids to watch Avatar

Last evening Shah Rukh Khan was the special guest at the screening of James Cameron's ,Avatar at a suburban Shahrukh khan with his family multiplex.

Shah Rukh was so enamoured after watching half the film, that he came out of hall and went up to the studio officials and requested them to organise a special screening for his two children and family members. The officials of the studio immediately assured him that they will do the needful.

A source said, "SRK has always been quite fond of science fiction and superhero films. Even as a child, he would always watch similar kind of films. This is why he immediately agreed to attend the special screening of Avatar.

He was also keen to attend the screening of Avatar at the suburban multiplex as the first theatrical promo of his new film My Name is Khan was scheduled to release during the screening. Everybody knows about SRK's love for superhero films so much so that he is right now in the process of making Ra.

One, which will be directed by Anubhav Sinha. SRK loved Avatar, which is why he also wants his kids to watch it."

Earlier this month, SRK's children couldn't wait to watch Paa and Amitabh Bachchan had sent some extra passes for them on SRK's request. "Aryan and Suhana love films and they would love to watch Avatar. The kids could not watch it last evening with SRK as they were busy with their school and studies," added the source.

Vijay Singh, Indian CEO of the company which produced Avatar, confirmed the news and said, "Shah Rukh was very excited about Avatar and the scale on which it was made. He requested another screening on Saturday so that he could watch the film again with his family. We will definitely and will decide on the venue and time today."

SRK attends Paa premier - Video

Shah Rukh Khan arrived at the premier of Paa with his wife, sister and kids.

Shahrukh Khan's request to Amitabh Bachchan

At one point of their career they were arch rivals. But, as time progressed, SRK and Big B have become thick friends. Thanks to their new chemistry, now SRK has no qualms picking up his phone and dialing his one time rival, that too on fast dial.

The buzz doing rounds is that SRK called up Big B recently and requested to send him some extra film passes for PAA's premiere, since his kids also want to watch Big B in his new role that has already caught the fancy of the kids. The premiere of PAA is expected to be a big affair and both Shahrukh and Aamir Khan will be present at the event along with their families.

The growing friendship between SRK-Aamir and Big B is seen as the beginning of a new camp in B-Town. With Salman Khan out of this big alliance, we wonder what else the trio plans to do besides coming to pose together at the PAA's premiere.

Shah Rukh Khan's £20M (140 CR) apartment in London

In his current trip to London Shahrukh Khan has ended up finally buying the 20 million pounds (140 CR) apartment in Central London in the Park Lane area. It is the highest cost paid by any Bollywood star ever for a property in foreign land.

“It is a known fact that the King Khan likes to visit London every year for vacation with his family. He generally stays in the best of the hotels on his visits there, but for past few months he was eyeing an apartment in London’s plush area for himself, so that he doesn’t have to stay in hotels every time. After going through many choices both him and wife Gauri ended up liking this particular place. But given its very high cost they took some while to take the final decision. Finally as he went there this time with his kids, even they liked the place a lot and he there and then decided to lock it forever.” our source close to the Bollywood super star reveals.

SRK incidentally apart from owning best star villa in Bollywood also owns big properties in the UAE.

SRK’s living a dual life in USA

If you think Shah Rukh Khan is enjoying a relaxed vacation with kids in US then you are completely wrong! Well it’s true that Shah Rukh is in US with his family but apart from enjoying his family time, he is also shooting for Karan Johar’s forthcoming film My Name Is Khan.

SRK knows how to handle both the responsibilities well. Being aware of his schedule he accordingly planned his kid’s vacation in US so that he could be with them during their summer vacations and not hamper his work too. According to a unit hand during breaks and after finishing his shoot SRK dedicates his entire time to the family.

It is also known that SRK got a studio erected in Mannat to be able to shoot his Tv commercials at home and spend the time saved with his family.

Knights gift SRK surprise holiday

If the Kolkata Knight Riders had played the way they had expected to, Shah Rukh Khan would have been here today in the “City of Gold” to be with his men in black and gold.

SRK had planned to return for the Knights’ last three matches and stay on till the May 24 final at the Wanderers. But thanks to the way the team has performed, he is not coming.

“Shah Rukh was always supposed to leave at the end of April regardless of how we played in the first four matches,” team director Joy Bhattacharjya said. “He had promised to rejoin the team from mid-May, only if they did well. Juhi Chawla was to come with him.”

As were many of the celebrity supporters who were at Eden Gardens last year — among them director Farhan Akhtar and musician Vishal Dadlani. “The turn of events is really disappointing,” Vishal said. “But I’m sure SRK and KKR will bounce back big time. I have absolute faith in his ability to inspire.”

Well, Shah Rukh is in no mood now to come over and inspire the team. And that has thrown the superstar’s calendar in disarray, something he said only his two kids could do.

Then again, he calls the Knights his kids, too.

He can’t even shoot because director-friend Karan Johar hadn’t scheduled filming for My Name is Khan in May because SRK was positive the Knights would make it to the semis and he would be here.

Shah Rukh is trying to make the most of the two free weeks he suddenly has. According to a source close to the actor, he has been religiously undergoing physiotherapy sessions to improve his operated-on left shoulder.

“He is also slated to shoot for a couple of days for Vivek Vaswani’s Dulha Mil Gaya,” the source said. SRK had injured his shoulder shooting for the film.

However, “the boss” hasn’t completely disowned his boys. The famous text messages are still coming, to select members of the Knight Riders.

Shahrukh, Aamir & Farhan bond with their daughters

There's more father-daughter bonding going on in Bollywood than meets the eye. As soon as Kartik Versus Kartik wraps up, Farhan Akhtar will take time off to be with his eldest daughter.

Says Farhan, "After I complete Kartik, I'm taking time off to be with my elder daughter who has her summer vacations. When her school opens in June, I leave to look for foreign locations for Don 2."

Then there's Shah Rukh. After bonding man-to-man with son Aryan for years now it seems Shah Rukh Khan is determined to forge an equally strong rapport with his daughter, Suhana.

Last week, when Shah Rukh visited Karan Johar's mom and Adnan Sami's father in hospital, it was not his wife or son but Suhana who accompanied the star.

Says a source close to SRK, "Suhana has always been closer to her mother (Gauri) while Aryan has been his papa's pet. Shah Rukh wants to change that. He's making a determined effort to spend quality time with Suhana."

According to close friends, Shah Rukh has been a boys' boy, a gadgets guy all his life. The delicate dainty girlie things have been beyond Shah Rukh's realm of understanding, let alone appreciation.

According to his guy pals, SRK would rather cheer for the IPL matches with Dhoni than sit at a fashion show with Gauri.

Says the friend, "Though Shah Rukh makes a very brave effort to be part of Gauri and Suhana's feminine activities and though he has been as much a part of Suhana's schooling as much as Aryan's it's only now that Shah Rukh is trying to make Suhana as much a part his activities."

And now with Shah Rukh, on the verge of completing his only assignment My Name Is Khan he intends to spend a lot of time with both his children.

In this, Shah Rukh seems to be united with Aamir who is currently on holiday with his son and daughter.
According to a close friend, both of Aamir's children Junaid and Ira are very close to the mega-star.

"Though the children stay with Aamir's first wife there's no dearth of empathy with their father. Junaid is bonding big-time with his dad and is already imbibing the rudiments of cinema from his father. Ira is a little shy of Aamir. But Aamir wants to change that."

Like Shah Rukh, Aamir too has taken almost a year off after his last assignment to be with his children.

IPL flop gives SRK two weeks off

Shah Rukh Khan is huddled with his family trying to figure out where to go on holiday.

IT is an unplanned break for the Khan family. SRK had booked himself out of Bollywood for the month of May, but the collapse of his team, the Kolkata Knight Riders, in the ongoing Indian Premier League tournament, has meant he has an extra fortnight to kill.

The shooting for Khan’s next film, My Name is Khan, a co-production with Karan Johar which marks the star’s comeback with Kajol, begins only on June 27 and will go on till July. "Itis not as if he wouldn't have gone on holiday, if the IPL thing hadn't happened," said a source close to the star, "but this has given him a couple of more weeks."

London, where Shah Rukh, wife Gauri and children Aryan and Suhana holiday every year, could be on the list of places to visit this year as well, the source said. "(In London) SRK plays football with Aryan in the park and walks down to the coffee-shop down the road from their house, while Gauri does more touristy stuff," said the source. SRK also “catches up on his reading”, the source said.

Meanwhile, is Khan twiddling his thumbs at home? "No, he can't stay inactive," the source added, "he's looking at the Red Chillies stuff." Red Chillies is Khan’s production company which makes films and television serials, among other production ventures.

"He also has a day's shoot left for Dulha Mil Gaya," said the source, confirming that the film has not been been fully shot yet. SRK had injured his shoulder on the sets of director Mudassar Aziz’s Dulha Mil Gaya last year. He had also reportedly professed his irritation to costar Sushmita Sen, at being asked to do lengthy roles under the guise of a 'special appearance'.

The Khans usually holiday every May or June, ostensibly to escape the worst of the Indian summer. But also, foes whisper, since it coincides with the IIFA awards. The brand ambassador of the awards, Amitabh Bachchan invites Shah Rukh every year, but the younger man has cited family holiday for his absence each time.

Khans at Mannat

Bollywood’s reigning royal couple, Shah Rukh and Gauri Khan, are ensconced in a deeply comfortable cream leather couch in the living room of their beautiful home, casually dressed and exuding a zest for life which tells you why they command the love of millions.

We are at Mannat, a 7-storey mansion, in a living room that, with its sumptuous furniture, massive art pieces and oversized coffee tables strewn with silver champagne urns carrying imported wines, shows off the impeccable taste of the style diva that Gauri Khan is.

The Badshah of Bollywood and his film producer wife are disarmingly casual about what are clearly priceless artifacts. “When Gauri’s not here, I play cricket in the drawing room with the kids,” says Shah Rukh smilingly and we look around in alarm at the crystal, the designer furniture and the thoughtful art that could be victim to such boisterous family moments.

Moments before Shah Rukh enters the room , Gauri chats up informally, dismissing any notions of being ‘powerful’. “I have no power of my own, I’m just an extension of him [Shah Rukh].” She quietly listens to us telling her that a lot of people look up to her as the epitome of grace and style and that she’s thought of as an enigma. "If I have any individual style, it has nothing to do with the surroundings that I’m in. I'm a lot like my father —very private. It’s not that I can’t, but I choose not to open up to media glare.”

Sparing the rod?
Do their kids, Aryan and Suhana, take after their extrovert dad or her? “Aryan is extremely ambitious at this age. Just like his father, he wants to be a winner. Suhana is too young but is also very strong headed,” she says.

At that point, ‘King Khan’ walks in, and after a warm ‘hi’, turns to her and says, “jaldi kuchh khaane ko do.” She quickly gets up to serve some bhel puri and roast potatoes to everyone while Shah Rukh takes over the conversation. “I love my chidren, utterly and completely. Gauri often complains that I spoil them. But since I lost my parents very early on in life, there’s this reservoir of love in me and my sister Lala Rukh (who lives with them).”

Gauri responds, “He’s a brilliant father, but he can’t say no to anything, anything they ask.” He justifies, “Why shouldn’t I indulge them, as long as no third party is getting hurt. People say they want their kids to learn hardships by flying economy class. I have a different logic. If God forbid someday we face hard times, they anyway won’t be able to afford first class, so why deny them something right now?”

He chuckles, “Anyway, Gauri tries to be strict with us but gives up after a while. We do everything she doesn’t approve of, like playing cricket in living room or eating in bed, when she’s not around.” Are their Mumbai born kids any different from the ‘Delhiite’ parents? “Not really, except when they say ‘aajoo bajoo’ in a typical lingo. It’s not bajoo, it’s bazoo, meaning bagal (armpit). But they say, “idhar, bajoo mein aa”, which is very irritating.

Compatibility quotient
As a couple, do they find themselves thinking and behaving alike? “We are at opposite spectrums,” says Shah Rukh. Gauri agrees instantly. “He is hyper-charged all the time. Wants to work 24X7. I like to travel…go on holidays, and he detests it.” “Yes I do,” says Shah Rukh. “When I’m at it though, I enjoy it. I never say no if the family wants me to go. They just have to say, “five days in London, or Delhi, and I say okay.”

He pauses to light a smoke, and she adds, “We are similar in the sense that we are both ‘home people’. If you ask us where we like to party in the city, we’ll say nowhere. Perhaps that’s why the marriage is working. If I was the kinds who would go out partying every night, he would kill himself.”

Where does Shah Rukh get his super sharp brains from? He smiles. “I’m not as bright as people make me out to be. Maybe I talk well and can converse on any topic, but that’s because I read a lot of books. I don’t know why people see this shrewd businessman in me. If Gauri and I take any decision in life, it’s for only one reason—that it makes us happy. For instance I've always been passionate about sports.

For 20 years, I looked at Manchester United as ‘my team’. I wanted Aryan to have a feeling of owning his very own team. So I bought the Kolkata IPL team because I could afford to. For the simple pleasure of being able to sit in a box with my family and be able to cheer for ‘our team’. But people looked at it as some calculated business move after much clever thinking.”

Love and hate
Ask them about what they love and hate about each other and they have loads to say. “Gauri is a queen. I think she’s the most stylish woman I’ve ever known,” he says and adds, “I’m completely unstylish. I have over hundred suits, they are all black and look the same.” She clarifies, “Style has nothing to do with clothes. It’s just that I want everything perfect and appreciate finer things. Everything I touch and feel, the cushions, the glass I drink water in, even the towel in the bathroom, everything has to be just perfect.”

He smiles, “She amazes me. I wonder, how someone can be so passionate about a candle stand. Also, while I go overboard with everything — over thinking, over worrying, over doing…even over acting — I’m utterly fascinated by her ability to remain unfazed at all times. I ask her, “Gauri, what did you do the whole day? and she replies, ‘an amazing amount of nothing’.

I feel it’s wonderfully gifted to be so content. Also, I love the fact that she has never looked at me like a star. When my statue was unveiled at the prestigious Grevin museum in Paris, all my friends — Karan, Ritesh, Pultu —accompanied me but they had to convince Gauri to come along. There was this amazing ceremony in my honour and while my friends had tears in their eyes, she looked completely bored. She’s totally detached from the image of Shah Rukh Khan, which makes me feel that she’s in love with me, the man, no matter how successful or unsuccessful I get.”

Does anything about her annoy him? “Nothing at all,” he says and she immediately jumps up. “Hey, say something because I have loads to say on what bugs me about you.” She elaborates, “He’s a hoarder, doesn’t throw anything away. It’s so annoying to see things fall from his cupboard. Also he’s late for everything —not late by hours, late by days.”

And what endears him to her? “Oh, the fact that he lets me be. Doesn’t ever impose his lifestyle, his friends on me. Imagine if he were to do that, I would have gone back to Delhi, or hanged myself,” she laughs. “Also he’s not fussy about anything, not even food.”

Shah Rukh shares an anecdote at this. “When we got married, her mother would visit us and like all typical mothers, tell her, “Tujhe khana banana toh seekhna padega”. She insisted that Gauri must learn to cook and enrolled her in a cooking class. Gauri sent our maid Chandra instead.” Adds Gauri, “It was so funny, Chandra with all those high society ladies learning to cook in a five star hotel. But mom was very happy that her damaad was getting good food.”

Family man
Shah Rukh says his image of a being a family man with no romantic scandals is “nothing great at all”. “That’s just how it should be. Just because I work with beautiful women, there’s no reason why I should be sleeping with them.

Also, I’m extremely sensitive about what my kids read about me. So I tell journalists clearly, “Write rubbish about me and I’ll smack your face. So no one writes trash about my personal life anymore. Anyway, now they think he’s got too old for scandals. Bachche bade ho gaye hain.”

Gauri echoes, “A marriage works, if it has to, despite and in spite of the profession. We are not an exemplary couple. Maybe a Mr Sharma loves his wife much more than he does, just that he won’t get written about.”

That said, Shah Rukh is clearly very much the romantic one out of the two, while she’s refreshingly practical. He sums up: “I love nothing in this world more than my family. I love what and who I have in my life. Allah’s been too kind, and I hope that’s how it stays.”

Did You Know?
* Shah Rukh Khan is obsessed with collecting houses. He says his parents struggled but couldn’t own a house, so he dreams of owning as much property as he can, in every city.

* Gauri doesn’t know how to cook, not even make tea. The last thing she cooked was a biscuit pudding — in 1998. He still remembers it as the best he’s ever had

* Their home Mannat has seven floors, and while most portion is unutilised, Shah Rukh refuses to ever sell or rent it out.

SRK's daughter pens first novella

Pop singer and actress Madonna's daughter Lourdes was in news recently for writing a novella. Lourdes wrote a story for a Christmas book for her Material mom. Now Shah Rukh's eight-year-old daughter Suhana has done the same.

Shah Rukh has been attempting to finish his autobiography for the last three years, however his beti has beaten him to it. She has finished writing a novella which has four chapters.

A source reveals, "While Aryan is into sports and video games, Suhana loves to read and write. The novella she's written tells the story of a girl with six feet long eyelashes. When SRK asked her how it was possible for a girl to have such long lashes, she quickly replied back saying that the lashes were not real but just extensions." The actor is very proud of his daughter's writing and proudly shows the book off to his friends.

All who have read the book are full of praise for the Khan kid. She obviously has inherited her reading and writing gene from her dad. The source adds, "Shah Rukh loves to read and has a huge library of both fiction as well as non-fiction books. He's extremely proud of the fact that at such a young age Suhana has managed to not just write one but complete four long chapters for her story."

King Khan’s children get special IPL chutti

As we put on our TV sets to watch the Indian Premiere League season 2’s matches of Shah Rukh Khan owned Kolkata Knight Riders we can also see Khan’s two kids Aryan (11) and Suhana (8) cheering for their team in South Africa. But it is learnt that they have been given special exemption to attend these matches and bunk the special classes of their school - Dhirubhai Ambani School.

Our source reveals, "Last IPL, the King Khan’s children, especially son Aryan was a regular feature in most of the KKR matches. But since the matches were held in India it was easily possible for their superstar dad to take them to the match venues. This year as the venue has shifted to South Africa, it seemed difficult that SRK would manage to take them along. Also since their school was holding special classes delaying their summer vacation. But Shah Rukh apparently applied for a special permission and the school gave his kids five days of holiday as a special case.”
