Star Plus becomes the co-sponsor for Kolkata Knight Riders

Two formidable stars in the business of entertainment in India, Star Plus and Shah Rukh Khan, have now come together with yet another innovation. For the first time in India, a Hindi general entertainment channel is a team co-sponsor at the IPL. Star Plus has partnered with Shah Rukh Khan's team 'Kolkata Knight Riders' (KKR) for the upcoming Indian Premiere League II cricket tournament. The 'KKR' players will have the Star Plus logo prominently displayed on the back of their T-shirts during the world's most enjoyed television experience.

Keertan Adyanthaya, Star Plus' EVP and GM said, "STAR Plus and Shah Rukh Khan have had a long-standing association with each other and are partners in the true sense of the word. Star Plus and Shah Rukh Khan first came together with 'Kaun Banega Crorepati' in 2006. SRK then did 'Kya Aap Panchvi Pass Se Tez Hai' in 2008 and now in 2009, they have come together for The Indian Premier League.

Book Review: Shah Rukh Can

This one is a voluminous book. A real voluminous one at that. If Shah Rukh Khan has been known for his non-stop talk then writer Mushtaq Sheikh too doesn't appear far behind when it comes to translating his thoughts into words. He writes, and writes and then further writes about Shah Rukh, something that makes one feel that more than a friend and a colleague, Mushtaq looks at Shah Rukh as a hero. Someone who is not just his hero but also an entire country's - correction, entire world's hero! It is this very 'fan factor' that makes 'Shah Rukh Can' a read that seems to be coming straight from an admirer's heart.

For a writer, such scenario has two sides to it:

a) Because you are so much in love of a celebrity, you want to explore anything and everything that you had always wanted to know about him.
b) Because you are so much in love of a celebrity, everything about him is taken entirely positively. It all becomes quite one-dimensional and even when there is something remotely negative that pops up, as a writer you have defences available even for that!

This is exactly what one senses after reading 'Shah Rukh Can'. If the book is to be believed, Shah Rukh has never taken a step wrong, he is the smartest actor/performer around and if at all there are some areas of improvement for him, he doesn't need to work in that direction because he can be loved even with the weaknesses continuing to persist. Now this could well be true; after all it may all be a solid fact that Shah Rukh Khan is a fantastic human being after all. It's just that one feels the lack of a single written word which is 'not-so-good' about the King Khan.

Is he a perfect human being, may be, but we do not get to know about it 100% through this book.

Leaving aside this factor, 'Shah Rukh Can' explores those facets about the actor and so many other tangents in his life, both pre and post his stardom. The kind of detailing that Mushtaq explores in this 350 page book (which by the way is pure text with hardly any pictures) is a testimony to the fact that the writer would have spent quite some time not just with the actor in question but also quite a few other prominent members from the film industry. Not just that, there are clear indications that he did extensive research on the biggest actor in the country today and was fully prepared before beginning to pen down 'Shah Rukh Can'.

From a book that claims to talk about 'The Life and Times of Shah Rukh Khan', the least you expect is some trivia from the actor's life, both personal and professional, about which not much has been written about in the past. The kind which makes you wonder if something like that had really happened in the actor's life. Thankfully, Mushtaq extracts quite some trivia out of the actor's life and surely there would have been in numerous instances that even Shah Rukh may not have remembered unless specifically pointed in that direction.

So you get to know how Shah Rukh was offered the role of Anil Kapoor's car driver in 1942 - A Love Story, which he rejected (of course!). Eventually Raghuvir Yadav did that role. Or how Shah Rukh completely surrendered to the director's vision and withdrew himself when he couldn't follow the trajectory of Subhash Ghai's Pardes. It's a different matter though that Shah Rukh was appreciated for his performance in the film but so was he in Karan Arjun too, which by the way he dared not watch over the years because he didn't connect with the role.

There are number of such little instances that make 'Shah Rukh Can' an interesting read. But is it just about the actor and the trivia around his life? Not at all. One of the unexplored facets of Shah Rukh that is covered in the book in extensive detail is his views around acting v/s performances. There are reams and reams that are spent on the actor's philosophy around acting and other finer nuances of filmmaking. Now does that make for an interesting read? Well, not exactly and that's because this entire episode in the book not just becomes a lot verbose but also hugely technical.

Credit goes to the writer of the book to have got Shah Rukh into such conversation which has seldom (or shall I say never) been covered by any other journalist/author in the past. In this regard, Mushtaq deserves a pat on the back for bringing in something which no one ever thought earlier. After all so excited have audiences been about Shah Rukh's personality and stardom over last decade and a half that seldom has anyone bothered to know about what makes the superstar tick in front of the camera.

However, one fact that still needs to be considered is that majority of readers of this book would be the same set of audiences who love to see him as Rahul and Raj on screen. For them, how does Shah Rukh differentiate between acting v/s performance doesn't quite make for an interesting read. Probably, they don't even care. All they want is his arms going up in the year with the dimpled cheeks facilitating a smile that continues to make millions look at him in awe. Now how does he achieve that? Well, that thesis is left for the intellectually inclined, which actually forms a miniscule part of the readers. Hence the reason why 3-4 chapters have been dedicated to this very aspect of Shah Rukh make for a quick skip read!

But ignore this part of the book and you have so much to know about Shah Rukh. Views about him come from the biggest of the makers, some of them being the kinds who have never ever given an interview. Case in point is Aditya Chopra who opens up in a big way while talking about his association with Shah Rukh. He remembers how he had to literally chase Shah Rukh to make him consent to do Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge. Apparently the actor was not too keen on doing love stories and wanted to stay away from that until Aditya convinced him otherwise and paved the way for a dozen odd love stories to follow over the years.

Some of the other interesting stories the books talk about:

- Why Shah Rukh went ahead and did an atrocious movie called Guddu
- His appearance in TV serial 'Waage Ki Duniya' as a rash driver
- Shah Rukh coming into Chamatkar after Deepak Malhotra (who had a one film career in Lamhe) rejected the film
- Viveck Vaswani being Shah Rukh's pillar of support during his initial years in Mumbai
- His struggling period in Mumbai when along with wife Gauri, he had to keep working hard in order to pay rent for his house
- His admiration for Amitabh Bachchan and how he considered him to be THE hero when compared to Dilip Kumar (there is great detailing that he gives around this - visit Page Nos. 206 and 207)
- His lack of understanding with Devdas when Sanjay Leela Bhansali narrated the script for the first time
- How he motivated Karan Johar even though the first shot that he took for Kuch Kuch Hota Hai was terrible
- Aditya Chopra believing that Dil To Pagal Hai wasn't great cinema
- How Farah Khan had reached the point of frustration when Shah Rukh Khan had made her wait for three years before saying yes to Main Hoon Naa.

And last but certainly not the least (after all this is most topical in the current scenario), how years back Shah Rukh had made a candid confession before stepping into filmdom -

"I'll destroy Aamir Khan. I'll take over Aamir. Main jab filmon mein aoonga na, baja doonga sabki"!

Unnoticed, Aamir-SRK snipe at each other

Even as Shah Rukh Khan and Aamir Khan did their huggy-huggy, kissy-kissy act at the producers' PC, what passed unnoticed was their cold verbal attacks on each other's biggest hits.

The exchange began when SRK described how "small films" took time to gather momentum and spread by word of mouth among audiences. What he said next must have left Aamir squirming. "Small films like Taare Zameen Par and A Wednesday took three months to start making money."

TZP of course was a huge hit, though its success was limited to mostly big cities and multiplexes.

Aamir retorted immediately, talking about the lack of transparency in the distributors' accounting. "Bollywood's biggest films like Gadar and Lagaan didn't get the exact return they should have got," he said. He left unmentioned SRK's Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and DDLJ, both of which rank high on the biggest grossers list in history before Ghajini.

"And Gadar and Lagaan along with Sholay are the historical hits of the industry," Aamir added, rubbing it in. He mentioned these two movies three times as being the biggest hits.

After that, Aamir fielded all the questions the journalists asked, not letting SRK get a word in.

An irritated Shah Rukh said: "I used to think this, but today I realised it, that Aamir is more intelligent than I am. He knows everything and answers every question."

An alarmed Karan Johar intervened at the next question, saying: "OK, let Shah Rukh answer this."

The stars were addressing the media and voicing their support for the producers against multiplex owners, demanding an equal share in profit, and a drop in ticket prices.

Both the Khans have spent the last couple of years running each other down, but it has been Aamir - saying he has a dog called Shah Rukh and denying that SRK is a king - who has made most comments.

Despite the recent public displays of affection, it certainly looks like the Khan war is far from over!

SRK's Korbo, Lorbo... is passe

Korbo, Lorbo, Jeetbo Re – these were the lyrics of the Kolkata Knight Riders anthem last year.

But that was when the IPL was held in India. Now, since the tournament has shifted to South Africa, SRK’s team has also changed its anthem, so that supporters there can easily chant it when the team takes to the field. “The tournament has moved to SA. Keeping that in view, the anthem Korbo, Lorbo... has been changed. The beats are different and the lyrics too will have a more international feel to it,” said a source close to the team.

Looks like Shah Rukh Khan is leaving no stone unturned in ensuring the success of his team this time round. That might be the reason why there are rumours that the video of the song will also be re-shot. “SRK has heard the song and there are talks of a new video being shot for it. But nothing is confirmed as of now,” informed the source. The original video for the song featured SRK in the team’s golden-and-black colours – wearing a dhoti in Kolkata ishtyle. Do you have a golden-black bermuda in mind now, Shah Rukh?

Every daughter is a laadli: SRK

On the launch of the Laadli Week celebrations, Shah Rukh ‘King’ Khan said, “Not everybody is blessed with a daughter; only lucky people are blessed with this bundle of joy. Every daughter is a ‘Laadli’, she is very special. Especially for a father, she is his laadli, his life’s ultimate desire; she is his life.”

Star Plus’ Laadli Week, which begins April 13, in association with the KC Mahindra Educational Trust’s Project Nanhi Kali, will see a series of fundraising and awareness creation events through promotions to educate underprivileged girl children in India. The week comprises of activities which will bring a smile on the children’s faces and give them memories to cherish for a lifetime.

Taking out time from the IPL mania, Saurav Ganguly said, “Everybody questions me about my most memorable moment — making a century in my test debut, winning a series in England or getting into the world cup finals. But the most memorable time is the time that I spend playing hide and seek with my seven-year-old daughter. Her smile is priceless; no trophy and no award can come closer to matching it.”

Known for her support to women’s causes in India and also an idol for many people across the country, Kiran Bedi, the host of Aap Ki Kachehri, a show that created waves on Indian television said, “I was my parent’s ‘Laadli’. It’s because of my parents’ upbringing that I am what I am today. It entirely depends upon the parents on how they bring up their girl child, educate her, make her financially self-reliant and get her the self respect she deserves. I am happy that the channel is celebrating the girl child week as ‘Laadli Week’ as the number of girl children in India is decreasing. And this is not happening because of poverty but mentality. If you think that you girls are weak, it’s not them but your upbringing which is weak.”

She further added, “If my parents had the same thought process, I wouldn’t be who I am today. Their thinking was strong and therefore I grew up to be a strong individual. You can also do the same. Bring up you girl child with care, make her self reliant; self reliance will come with education and self reliance is power. If you do this, your girl children will respect you more and will care of you for life. Make your faith in your girl child strong.”

That’s not all; even the telestars who are the laadlis of their parents onscreen as well as in real life are supportive of this initiative. Popular Sara Khan aka Sadhana of Sapna Babul ka–Bidaai said, “This is an excellent initiative. I think we should promote girls as people think that girls are not doing anything and therefore girls are a bane in our lives. These days, maximum high rankers in schools are girls. We have often heard in the news that girls are making new records in academics and every other field as they are very capable. This initiative, supporting the education of 600 girls every year, will make a great difference. I think this will work as an eye opener for those who are still silent when it comes to educating and helping orphan girls.”

Further added Parul Chauhan, the newly wed Ragini of Sapna Babul ka - Bidaai, “Being a girl, I completely support this cause. I believe the happiness of building a new life for an orphan girl is completely out of the world. If all of us could spare a small share of our income towards the life of a girl child then we can really make a difference.”

The fresh new face on television, Hina Khan, who plays Akshara in Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai, said, “I am very glad to be a part of this platform where one can speak up for the girl child. It is really sad that even today people do a sex determination of their unborn child and choose not to have a girl child. The strength of a woman is something that is not recognized even today. A platform has been created for people to speak up for the girl child and to come forward and help in whatever way they can... financially or just by moral support. I am proud to be a part of this and proud to be a woman.”

As a part of the initiative, winners of a contest will also have the chance to have their daughter featured in the show Sabki Laadli Bebo.

Shah Rukh Khan is security conscious

When you are one of the biggest superstars of the Hindi film industry, it is expected that you will settle for nothing but the best. While Shah Rukh Khan's Bandra's residence Mannat has always had tight security, the actor recently upgraded the security level by installing state-of-the-art devices at Mannat. It is SRK's way of ensuring that no harm comes to his family or staff at Mannat.

Commenting on the high-tech devices SRK has installed at Mannat, our source said, “Shah Rukh has installed bullet-proof windows in his house. The bullet-proof glass is from Germany.”

Shah Rukh's concern for safety does not end there. Other than the bullet-proof glass, Shah Rukh has an identifying device in the elevator. The doors of the elevator only open when SRK or his family calls for the lift.

If SRK or his family has visitors, a security guard has been specially assigned to escort guests into SRK's house. “The guard has a swipe card with which the doors of the lift open,” added our source.

While Shah Rukh refused to confirm the story, our source said, “Shah Rukh is always concerned about the security of his family and the people who work in his house. He doesn't want to leave any stone unturned to ensure their safety. Shah Rukh is a very caring father, husband and boss.”
