No rest for SRK

Shah Rukh Khan landed in India this week for a surgery on his left shoulder. But two days within his coming back home, Khan was seen at a promotional event of his sitcom Ghar Ki Baat Hai at Taj Lands End.

But that’s not the only thing. King Khan, who will be out of action – read filming for My Name is Khan – for eight weeks, will be making appearances, promoting Billu Barber and filming for adverts in his period of “rest”.

After attending a launch of Red Chilies’s Idiot Box’s first show on January 27 and then on February 1, SRK will be a part of the Nach Baliye finale. SRK will be on the show to promote his home production movie Billu Barber along with the leading lady of the movie Lara Dutta.

A source from the show informs, “We were thinking about many options but when we heard that Shah Rukh was in India, we approached him. And he agreed to be a part of the show which was very nice of him. In the last season he came to promote his movie Om Shanti Om and we received a good response for it so we were keen on calling him on the show again.”

Shah Rukh is also expected to film a couple of advertisements for the products he endorses. He will also be looking into the IPL plan for his team Kolkata Knight Riders. The IPL season will begin soon and Khan is looking at potential players for his team.

“Since I have a forced holiday of eight to nine weeks, I will be attending most of the creative meetings of Idiot Box (SRK’s TV production house). It is fun to attend it and it also helps to flesh out stories. I want devote some time for the promotion of Billu Barer which I could not do as yet as I wasn’t here,” says SRK.

Shah Rukh injured his left shoulder while performing an action sequence during the shoot of Dulha Mil Gaya. He was recently in the US for a 45 day shoot of Karan Johar’s My Name Is Khan. But with his shoulder injury re-surfacing, Khan took the decision to come back home for surgery. He has been advised 8 weeks of complete rest after the operation. But it looks like rest is the last thing on SRK’s mind!

SRK loves Priyanka more than Deepika or Kareena

If Priyanka Chopra declares from the rooftops that she is Shah Rukh Khan's biggest fan then it is with reason. The superstar, who has been taking more than a passing interest in the music of the films he produces, decided to give away a large portion of his duet in " Billu Barber " to her.

"Shah Rukh took very close interest in each one of the songs. He isn't a musician, but he has an instinctive ear for music. It takes him just a few seconds to approve or cut down a track," told composer Pritam Chakraborty.

With the songs meant for Kareena Kapoor and Deepika Padukone, Pritam faced no problems.

"Shah Rukh loved his songs with Kareena ('Marjani') and Deepika ('Love mera hit hit'). They were straightforward dance songs with shared grooves between Shah Rukh and Kareena and Deepika," said Pritam.

The song with Priyanka needed special treatment and Shah Rukh made Pritam re-work and re-record the song.

"Shah Rukh's song with Priyanka 'Khuda-ae-kher' is not an item song. It's a love ballad that the pair playing Bollywood superstars emote to in front of the camera. Being a love song Shah Rukh felt there wasn't enough of the female presence in the vocals. He made me re-record the song with more for the female vocalist (Dominique) to do since he wanted Priyanka to have an equal number of lines," the composer said.

"It was entirely Shah Rukh's idea to give Priyanka more lines in the song. He's a very generous entertainer. If you see him on screen he never tries to steal the limelight from his heroines. Even ' Khai ke paan banaras wala ' in 'Don' had a lot of Priyanka in it although it was entirely Shah Rukh's song," Pritam added.

Asked about Shah Rukh's generosity, Priyanka sighed and said: "What do I say? Now do you know why he's my favourite?"

Irrfan Khan and Lara Dutta, who play a rustic couple in "Billu Barber", will later be seen enacting the same Shah Rukh-Priyanka ballad.

SRK mends bridges with Manoj Kumar

Signaling the end of the bitter war that ensued between Shah Rukh Khan and yesteryear actor Manoj Kumar with the release of Om Shanti Om in 2007, Shah Rukh visited Manoj recently and spent nearly four hours with him.

He shared some light moments with Manoj’s grandchildren too. Shah Rukh also went to enquire after the health of Manoj’s ailing mother-in-law, Savita Devi, who is SRK’s late mother’s good friend.

Says Manoj, “Look, there wasn’t ever an epic war between us that we wouldn’t meet again. He made a mistake and apologised for it. My 94-year-old mother-in-law had to be recently operated upon, and Shah Rukh wanted to meet her. My mother-in-law used to make khakras for Gandhiji. She is a former MP from Congress and Shah Rukh’s mother was a social worker, that’s how they met.”

Ask him more about the visit and Manoj continues, “Shah Rukh asked me why I was not making films anymore. I asked him what his problem was if I don’t make any and just rest at home. We joked about it. It was nice to meet him, I hardly interact with present day stars. I’ve just spoken to Aamir Khan over phone. And imagine, I haven’t met Salman since the last 19 years, despite his father, Salim Khan, being one of my closest friends.”

‘I haven’t ever forgotten my marriage anniversary’

You are back on television once again but this time as producer.
Yeah...I started my acting career with serials like Circus and Fauji. I got to learn a lot of things. I got into films because of having worked in serials.

After Circus, you are once again working with Aziz Mirza on the television front.
Yes. Nothing would have been possible without Aziz Mirza’s expertise, advice, and guidance. I would have been nowhere without him.

What made you venture into TV when low TRPs have become the order of the day?
You need support and friends who think alike. We have been discussing this since last two-three years. There is risk for sure but NDTV Imagine was confident that we were competitive enough. I want the young people in my film production house Red Chillies to diversify into different arena.

What kind of programmes will your production house churn out?
There is nothing specific that we are planning for television. I have been a film producer for the last eight to nine years and have an acting experience of 20 years. I can bring a difference to television in terms of presentation of content. I will try to bring cinematic value to television.

Why did you choose title Ghar Ki Baat Hai for this sitcom?
It’s a good title. It has lyricism in it. We had another title called Devdas Ki Maut which was not so happening. The serial is about a family, their neighbours and different situations that they face in life thus its Ghar Ki Baat. If you ask me why comedy, personally I like comedy more than anything else.

Do you think this serial has your Ghar Ki Baat?
Well television industry doesn’t have that much money to have a set like my home. Jokes apart, it will have everybody’s ghar ki baat with lots of spice. Its first episode has Sumit Raghavan forgetting his anniversary. Interestingly, I haven’t forgotten my marriage anniversary yet. Even otherwise there are stories like these happening in my home too.

Will you be making a special appearance in the serial?
Yeah I will be making special appearance as and when required. We will try to rope in more special stars if required.

SRK plans to bring cinematic value on television

Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan, who has forayed into television by producing a weekly sitcom 'Ghar Ki Baat Hai' has said that he wants to bring "cinematic value" on the small screen.

"There is no specific cache of programmes which we are planning on television. I have been a film producer for the last eight to nine years and have experience of acting for the last 20 years. I think I can bring a difference to television in terms of presentation of content. I will try to bring cinematic value to television," Shah Rukh said.

"Sitcoms are situational comedies. If you see series like Friends','3 is company', you will realise that situations are same. But, there is newness in the characters. Besides, there is originality in the presentation," he said to a query on 'Ghar Ki Baat Hai' (GKBH) being inspired by popular television series of the 80s 'Yeh jo hai zindagi'.

"'GKBH' is not a copy of YJHZ but a tribute to it," he said adding he loved comedy shows and family dramas and GKBH was a good mix of both.

"Light content was commercially viable. I am strangely connected with television. I made my debut in acting with television working with Saeed Mirza, Kundan Shah and Aziz Mirza and now Aziz, Sameer Nair have persuaded me to be back on television," Shah Rukh said.

He said the actors in the show, which goes on air this weekend, have been chosen by his creative team. It features Sumeet Raghavan, Juhi Babbar, Swapnil Joshi, Jayati Bhatia and Ali Asghar.

The show's director Anant Mahadevan, who was part of TV series 'Circus' made by Aziz Mirza said life has come full circle for him with GKBH because he was working with Mirza and SRK, who played the lead in the serial.

"GKBH is a classic comedy which will capture the essence of television of the 80s where shows by Kundan Shah, Aziz and Saeed Mirza, Sai Paranjpye ruled the roost," he said.

Sameer Nair said the show has a stellar cast and a killer story coupled with King Khan as the producer.

Besides, a reality show 'Knights and Angels', to find cheer leaders for his IPL Kolkata knightriders team will go on air in March. A talk show on first ladies on Hindi cinema is already on air.

Both the shows are produced by SRK's television company 'Red Chillies Idiot Box'.

I would have preferred a soccer career, says Shah Rukh

Shah Rukh Khan is the best known mega Indian film star. But the other day he said he would have preferred a sporting career to one in films.

He was speaking at the finale of the Asia West Pacific Regional physiotherapy conference organised by the Dr Ali Irani-headed Indian Association of Physiotherapy. Dr Ali was the first physio to travel with an Indian sporting team. He was Indian cricket team physio from 1987 to 1997.

Shah Rukh Khan vibed well with the 10, 50 physiotherapists and delegates from 23 countries at the valedictory. He referred to the injuries he has faced all his life, first in sport and then thanks to the stunts he does himself by choice. Said Shah Rukh, "Thanks to my injuries I know every part of my body, the muscles, the tendons.

My body has pieces of metal in it. I have undergone spinal surgery and I am going for a shoulder surgery in some ten days.''

Shah Rukh said he was so injury prone that his interaction with physios began from the age of 15. "I was playing soccer at Delhi's Ambedkar Stadium and had a lower back problem. An old gentleman, Dr Abbott, treated me. I think he was orthopaedics guy. I don't think there were many physios then. That was the end of my professional sporting career. I would have preferred it to the one in showbiz. Now my son is into athletics and soccer and I think he will need the back-up of physiotherapy. ''

Continuing in a serious vein, Shah Rukh exhorted the physios to become affordable to all sections of the society. He said, "In India we are used to medicine of hakims and vaids. Invasive therapy is not the order of the day. Physiotherapy for most is means massage. I love massage though,'' he said smiling.

Shah Rukh-Manoj Kumar truce over 'Om Shanti Om' spoof

Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan met veteran actor Manoj Kumar for an out-of-the-court settlement regarding the cases filed against him in connection with the spoof in his home production 'Om Shanti Om'.

Kumar called him to his residence to discuss withdrawal of the court cases, Shah Rukh told reporters in Mumbai on Tuesday night.

"He told me that he was elder to me and was forgiving me for the mistake committed. I and director Farah Khan had sought forgiveness from him several times for our mistake," he said.

"The spoof in the film was not with an intention to belittle him or hurt him. He told me that he would not like to carry on the burden of the court cases," Shah Rukh said.

Kumar had dragged Shah Rukh to court for not honouring the promise of deleting the sequence in the film that shows security guards of a movie theatre beating him up after he displays a driving license showing his photo in his trade mark style covering the face with his palm.

The veteran, who has produced and directed several patriotic films earning him the title 'Bharat Kumar', had asked Shah Rukh to withdraw the scene to which director Farah Khan and he as the producer of the film agreed.

But, the scene continued to be a part of the film and before its television premiere Kumar filed a case against Shah Rukh.

Shahrukh and Kajol return after shooting in Los Angeles

Eight years after they last paired together, Shahrukh Khan and Kajol have completed the first schedule of their next film.

While Shahrukh had been in the US since December last year for Karan Johar’s next directorial venture My Name Is Khan , Kajol joined the shoot only in the second week of January.

The two stars shot for as many as twenty days in Los Angeles before the first schedule was declared complete by Karan Johar . Now, they will shoot the next schedule in Mumbai from March to May. After that they will return to the US to finish the film’s shooting in the final schedule in June.

During the recently concluded schedule of the film in LA, Kajol was accompanied by her mother, sister and daughter Nysa. In fact, the reason why Kajol dilly-dallied so much to do this film is because she did not want to be separated from her daughter.

SRK and Kajol are one of the most sought-after onscreen couples in Bollywood. Though they last paired in Johar’s Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham , Kajol has made special appearances in SRK-starrers like Kal Ho Na Ho , Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna , Om Shanti Om and Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi .

At last in ‘My Name Is Khan’ they are romantically paired after eight long years. The movie has SRK playing a man who suffers from milder form of autism. Kajol plays his wife.

SRK goes under the knife

.. this time for a tear in the shoulder, aggravated by shooting for Karar Johar in the LA winter.

Shah Rukh Khan, who underwent a difficult and painful back surgery some years ago, is now destined to go under the scalpel again for a tear in the shoulder muscle. He suffered the injury in Mumbai when shooting a stunt scene for Mudassar Aziz’s Dulha Mil Gaya. But, as if keeping in mind the old adage ‘no pain, no gain’, SRK continued shooting with occasional physiotherapy from his old friend Dr Ali Irani. Then, instead of resting, he flew to LA where he had a month-long schedule slated for Karan Johar’s My Name Is Khan. The LA winter did him in. He was taken to a hospital in pain where an MRI showed up the tear in his left shoulder. Now the actor is back and looking at undergoing a shoulder arthroscopy to repair the tear in his supraspinatus muscle.

Talking to this paper, SRK who dragged on in LA through the pain just so that Karan Johar’s shooting schedule might not get disrupted, admitted, “I was advised surgery, but pulled through on temporary medical assistance until I could not bear the pain any longer. I have to now go in for surgery in the next few days.”

He has no choice because the next schedule of My Name Is Khan requires the Bollywood Badshah to be fighting fit and performing all kinds of stunts. His doctors, of course, have advised him otherwise. “Inshallah, I’ll be fine,” smiled the hero.

Meanwhile, the Bollywood Badshah remains undaunted at the prospect of surgery. At the Asia West Pacific Regional Physiotherapy Conference organised by Dr Ali Irani of the Indian Association of Physiotherapy, he kept medicos, some 800 physiotherapists, delegates from 23 countries and students in splits by referring to all the injuries he has faced.

Said Shah Rukh, “Thanks to my injuries, I know every part of my body, all the muscles, the tendons. My body has pieces of metal in it.” His interaction with physios began from the age of 15. “I was playing soccer at Delhi’s Ambedkar Stadium and developed a lower back problem. That was the end of my professional sporting career. I would have preferred it to the one in showbiz,” he said. “Indias are used to medicines of hakims and vaids. Invasive therapy is not the order of the day. Physiotherapy for most means massage. I love massage though,” he said smiling.

SRK does it, only for Priyanka

Shahrukh Khan recently played a perfect friend to Priyanka Chopra. Priyanka features in a special song-and-dance sequence in Shahrukh's new film Billu Barber. The song -- Khudaya Khair -- was originally composed keeping just Shahrukh in mind and that meant Priyanka would have had only some shots in it. When SRK got to know about this, he immediately called up the music director of the film, Pritam, to make some modifications to the song so that Priyanka would have an equal screen time in it.

A source says, "Shahrukh always keeps his friends in mind when he does a film. Priyanka, Kareena and Deepika agreed to do the film because SRK personally asked them. As soon as he approached Priyanka to do the song she readily agreed without even asking about her screen time."

The insider adds, "Shahrukh called Pritam to tweak the original song and he himself checked it before starting the shoot with Priyanka."

Pritam says, "The original song was composed keeping Shahrukh in mind and he did tell me to make modifications for the song which would have Priyanka in it. And during the video edit of the film, I sat with a female vocalist and introduced new female vocals in it."

Shah Rukh Khan to be chased by '50 mulkon ki Police' in Don-2

On the sets of 'Oye! It's Friday', Shah Rukh Khan and Farhan Akhtar found themselves in such a playful zone that it turned out to be a two-episode show instead of a single episode. Have a look at what to expect in the second and concluding episode that would be aired today.

- Shah Rukh jokes about how it's difficult to explain to his children the need for wearing makeup for macho roles. He also talks about how Indian Cinema is growing by leaps and bounds with young talent making Indian cinema go places.

- Shah Rukh tries to relive the Mohabbatein moment as he 'attempts' playing the violin all over again. A difficult task for him because he is pitted against none other than Violin maestro Lakshminarayana Subramaniam, also known as Ambi, who in spite of being in just his 12th standard has already begun to follow in the footsteps of his father, the famous Violin Maestro Dr. L. Subramaniam.

- This young genius gave his first performance at the age of seven and has already performed extensively in Indian and abroad. Ambi has also performed with his father for Karnatic concerts at the prestigious Dussehra Festival at the Mysore Palace and recently performed at the Lincoln Center Out- of- Doors Festival.

- Even though Shah Rukh believed that playing a violin was his 'Dain haath ka khel', all he could do was just 'pretend' playing the violin. However, once Ambi started playing it, SRK didn't have any other choice but to admit that actors are after all only the face of the talent. However, the mischievous man that he is in real life, SRK did joke about how he would teach Ambi to 'act' while playing a violin.

- Shah Rukh Khan also shared an interesting anecdote about a real life situation that he found himself in during the shoot of Mohabbatein. He reveals that he was so bad at playing the violin that Amitabh Bachchan and Aditya Chopra actually banned him from using a real violin, courtesy the kind of sounds that he produced while playing it. However, when it came to Ambi, his riveting performance got him a standing ovation from Shah Rukh Khan, Farhan and the entire Oye audience.

- There is an interesting game played as well where Shah Rukh Khan is required to recognize his heroines. So how does he do that? Well, he uses his glasses, sunglasses and the torch!

- One of the major highlights of the show involves Farhan Akhtar asking Shah Rukh to call a girl from the audience. The girl here turns out to be Silky. Well, SRK being SRK, he tells her - 'Silky, I'm Milky'. He scares her though with his ever-so-famous 'Madan Chopra' dialogue from Baazigar. The girl is obviously shocked but this is when SRK does something that relaxes the atmosphere. What did he do?

- Farhan Akhtar jokes that instead of '11 mulkon ki Police', there should been at least 50-60 countries involved or maybe even 3-4 planets. A possibility explored? Try doing that in Don 2!

- On a serious conversation around 'Brand SRK', Shah Rukh again maintains that 'He is not SRK; instead he works for SRK'. He also talks about how when something works, branding starts! He adds though that basic level of honesty is required in all what one does and though it is not necessary to rebel, one should not do wrong things because everybody is not a superhero. He also mentions that there is no alternative to hard work!

- Shah Rukh Khan talks about his presence in 20-20 Cricket. He also jokes about how all his childhood pictures were the ones that showed him playing sports. He brings up his love for Chak De India and talks about the sorry state where children cannot tell their parents about their aspirations to be sportspersons. On this, Farhan requests parents to support children who are inclined towards sports.

- Of course, how could a Farhan Akhtar show get completed without a gift being given to the guest? While Farhan does hand him over something interesting, Shah Rukh jokes that how Farhan could have asked him earlier about his choices and he would have been glad to send over a list.

- Shah Rukh Khan makes a grand exit to one of his most popular songs of the decade. Any guesses?

Shahrukh not to attend Amrita's marriage

Amrita Arora's wedding (March 2) guestlist consists of the who's who of the film industry. And yes, Shahrukh Khan is on that list. It will be interesting to see if SRK will attend the wedding festivities that kick off next month. Says a source close to Amrita, "Amrita Arora and her sister Malaika are extremely fond of Shahrukh and Gauri Khan and are regulars at every party at Mannat. The SRK-Salman fight did not affect the equation between the women of the families, who continue to be friends."

However Sohail and Arbaaz stopped accompanying their wives Seema and Malaika to SRK's home after King Khan's jhagda with Sallu. Which is why it seems like the only person from Mannat who will be seen at the Arora shaadi is Gauri. Sources close to King Khan are sceptical about his presence at the wedding, because Amu's like a member of Salman Khan's family. Given the equation between the two actors, to avoid unpleasantness, SRK will probably stay away. He wouldn't want to be on Sallu's turf, given what happened the last time.

Says the source close to the bride-to-be, "Amu has always held Shahrukh great regard for SRK and she is keen that Shahrukh attend the wedding. Amu personally called to invite him. Apparently, the actor voiced his concern about bumping into Salman and causing a tense situation on her special day." Amrita plays it safe, "I can't comment on this. I haven't yet decided my wedding date, so where's the question of inviting anyone?"

Shah Rukh to essay the role of B-town’s famous baddie ‘Mogambo’

It was his bad boy conniving act that bought him much acclaim and turned him into an overnight sensation and now it seems that Shah Rukh Khan is going back to his roots. After being touted as the industry’s romantic boy, SRK will reportedly be seen enacting the most famous villains of all time - Mogambo.

Apparently, Shekhar Kapur, the director of superhit ‘Mr India’, is bowled over by Shah Rukh’s baddie acts. The filmmaker who has been toying with the idea of making a sequel to the film has reportedly approached King Khan for the legendary role essayed by Amrish Puri earlier.

Even though Shekhar states that the role has been tailor made for Shah Rukh; the actor is yet to give his final nod.

A news daily quoted a source as saying, “This film will also star Anil Kapoor and Sridevi, as in the original, but the script has been twisted, to be made more villain centric. Today, there are very few villains who have the towering personality required for the Mogambo type of role, which was played with flourish by the late Amrish Puri in the original ‘Mr India’. And who better than Shah Rukh, who has excelled in negative roles like ‘Baazigar’ and ‘Darr’, to play the role?”

Prior to approaching Shah Rukh, the filmmaker had offered the role to KK Menon. But after the script was made to be villain centric, the team started hunting for a much bigger actor to play the baddie

Everything isn’t made for me alone: Shah Rukh Khan

Gone are the days when the King Khan used to poke many by saying that he was the best and he wanted all the possible love, attention and fanfare. Shah Rukh seems to have been breathing in humble airs, for the actor has for the first time gone on record saying that there are actors who are if not better as good as him.

Now that is some news coming from SRK at least. When asked what he thought of actors who did films rejected by him, the newly humbled Khan said, “There shouldn’t be any afterthought once a decision is made. Nobody could have done a better job than Sanjay Dutt in ‘Munnabhai...’ Yes, I was keen to do ‘Lagaan’, but Ashutosh and I didn’t get a producer at that time. I wasn’t into production then. And I didn’t do 3 Idiots which Aamir is doing now.”

Wonder if it was a coincidence that Aamir did both the flicks that SRK couldn’t. To that SRK said “Looks like Aamir was destined to do both the roles. He is brilliant, no doubt.”

On a serious note, SRK said “Everything isn’t made for me alone. God has given me enough, I’d better be happy and contented.”

Feels good to know that at least someone is content in the big bad world of Bollywood.

SRK grooves to R&B

Shah Rukh Khan has picked up the steps of the African-American contemporary R&B dance genre for a song-and-dance sequence that will feature Priyanka Chopra in it. This is the third highly stylised song from Billu Barber titled Khudaya khair which will see the Khan woo Piggy Chops. The promos of the other two songs -- featuring him and Kareena Kapoor and Love Mera Hit Hit featuring Deepika Padukone alongside him -- have already been aired.

Pony Verma, the choreographer, reveals: "Shah Rukh isn't really dancing regular Bollywood steps in the song. It's groovier and he has learnt the R&B (Rhythm & Blues) pretty well. Shah Rukh is always enthused about doing different stuff and he had no problems in picking up the steps. When he started dancing, it was magic. The song will see Shah Rukh throwing attitude to woo Priyanka. We have finished shooting it."

She adds, "We had 10 foreign dancers in the sequence too which will see Priyanka flaunting three different looks. This song has a very lounge feel to it and is a remixed version of the song Khudaya Khair. Incidentally this song was shot twice: the first onewill see Lara Dutta and SRK dance to it. We shot that song in Polachi."

SRK carries mineral water to wash his hair

Men have their cars, and women have their hair. Or so we thought. But men are as fussy when it comes to their locks. Case in point: Shah Rukh Khan.

The actor is very particular about his mane and makes sure he treats it well. He is finicky; not just about hair products, but also about the water he uses to wash his tresses.

When the actor shoots out of the city in remote places, where there is only hard water available, he carries mineral water to care for his locks.

During a shoot of Priyadarshan's Billu Barber in Pollachi, the actor ensured there was a steady supply of mineral water for his bath.

A source reveals, "His hair reacts badly to hard water. He has a condition where his hair gets hard and loses its shine if he doesn't take good care of it.

And you can't have a bad hair day while shooting, so he only uses bottled water in such cases." On the sets of Billu Barber, it had become a joke, and everyone would tease him about it.

Says his hair stylist who advised King Khan against using hard water, "It's important for styling that hair be washed with regular water.

In the past, SRK's hair got damaged when he used well water while shooting in remote locations during Paheli. After that, he has learned to be careful.

As an actor, you are in the business of looking good, so you better take care of your skin, body and hair. Also it affects the look and continuity in the film and he doesn't want to take any risks."

SRK & Billu Barber: Making ordinary extraordinary again!

After making the love story of an ordinary couple extraordinary, in his last all time blockbuster success, Yash Raj’s Aditya Chopra directed RAB NE BANA DI JODI, the extraordinary superstar returns with his home banner venture, BILLU BARBER. The saga of the common man, a barber played by ace actor, Irrfan Khan, will see Shah Rukh Khan in the role of a superstar.

The tag line of the film, ‘Its special to be ordinary’, once again brings back into the limelight the common man, a cause propagated well with the stupendous success of RNDBJ, with billions of female fans falling in love with SRK’s common man avatar - Surinder Sahni, I work for Punjab power! And so once again championing the cause of the commoner, we have Billu Barber, which like RNDBJ, will have the common man as the major focus and how he rises above the ordinary to become special, rather, extraordinary. Thus the interesting tagline, Its special to be ordinary becomes all the more meaningful. And is just not an attention grabbing one but in sync with the theme of Billu Barber.

No doubt the global superstar makes ordinary extraordinary, as he proved with RNBDJ, and here’s hoping he does the same, this time with his home banner production!

I don’t regret turning down Slumdog: SRK

One week after the Golden Globes and Slumdog Millionaire, Shah Rukh Khan talks to BT about going to LA and walking on stage with lead actress Freida Pinto in hand to present Danny Boyle’s film on Mumbai with the prestigious award. “It was a historic moment and I felt proud to be an Indian,” said the actor who was introduced as the King of Bollywood and who...yes, had rejected the role in the film that subsequently went to Anil Kapoor!

How different was the Golden Globes from our award shows?
The people are very gracious and are genuinely happy for each other’s success. In India we go to such functions only to collect our own awards and sneak away. There people stayed back and shared the happiness in the get-together.

Were you intimidated by Hollywood’s biggies?
No, I felt confident like always. Given a chance, I would have shown them some Bollywood pelvic movements!

What stopped you?

I don’t know how they would have taken it, they are not familiar with our humour, it would have been a little out of place.

How are Hollywood’s A-listers?
Usually I am very anti-social. But that night I was taken around and it was wonderful to meet everyone. People spoke very graciously about Bollywood. I am naturally shy of women, but when I saw Demi Moore, Kate Winslet, Drew Barrymore, Salma Hayek, Penelope Cruz and Jennifer Lopez, I must say... they are so beautiful! I was introduced to Mark Antony and Dustin Hoffman, too. There was Beyonce and Gerard Butler whom I know from before. Emma Thompson, who I know since the last three years, blew me a flying kiss.

You regret not accepting the role that Anil Kapoor played?
No. I know Danny felt bad about it. But he is such a good human being. And his love for India is something very special. After I saw the film, I thought Anil had done a fabulous job and deserves every bit of the
success.

Other roles that you refused (Lagaan, Munnabhai MBBS and now 3 idiots) went on to make big news...

There shouldn’t be any afterthought once a decision is made. Nobody could have done a better job than Sanjay Dutt in Munnabhai... Yes, I was keen to do Lagaan, but Ashutosh and I didn’t get a producer at that time. I wasn’t into production then. And I didn’t do 3 Idiots which Aamir is doing now. Looks like Aamir was destined to do both the roles. He is brilliant, no doubt. Everything isn’t made for me alone. God has given me enough, I’d better be happy and contented.

Two child victims of a grenade attack in Srinagar are undergoing treatment at the Nanavati hospital with the help of superstar Shah Rukh Khan who is bearing the entire cost of treatment.

SRK first heard of the orphans -- Muddassar (5) and Amina (3) from Dr Ali Irani, head of the department of physiotherapy and sports medicine at the hospital. The actor has donated Rs 50 lakh for the children's ward at the hospital in memory of his mother.

Dr Ali, who is part of a team of doctors that treats children hit by disasters in Jammu and Kashmir, met the kids during one of his visits to Srinagar. Dr Ali told People magazine that he knew he could ask the doctors to treat the children for free but there would be plenty of other expenses.

"So, I just spoke to Shah Rukh," he said. The superstar also visited the hospital and promised to introduce them to his kids as soon as they were out of the hospital. Zubair, the elder cousin of the children told the magazine, "Amina keeps asking me if I have spoken with Shah Rukh and when is he going to take her to meet his daughter. ´Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi´ Grosses 180 Crores Worldwide!

RAB NE BANA DI JODI, which released worldwide five weeks ago on December 12th 2008, has grossed a phenomenal Rs. 180 crores worldwide till date and has broken all previous box office records for Yash Raj Films, as well as become the highest-grossing Shahrukh Khan film till date. The film was released at an extremely precarious time, just after the terror attacks in Mumbai on 26th November 2008. Amidst uncertain consumer sentiments and apprehensions from the trade regarding market conditions at the time, the film has achieved an unparalleled box office run against all odds. Moreover, the film had to further contend with the record-breaking onslaught of GHAJINI on December 26th 2008, despite which it has continued unabated and endured a hugely successful run in its third, fourth and fifth weeks, and promises to carry on in the same vein going forward.

The total collections of RAB NE BANA DI JODI for the first five weeks in India are Rs. 83 crores net (i.e. gross collections of close to Rs. 140 crores). The film has thus surpassed Yash Raj Films' previous highest grosser, DHOOM: 2, which collected Rs. 80.6 crores net across its entire run in India and is considered as one of the highest grossing films of all-time. RAB NE BANA DI Jodi has also comfortably surpassed the collections of two of the biggest hits of the last 2 years, SINGH IS KINNG and OM SHANTI OM, and is now second only to GHAJINI as regards all-time India net collections.

Not only in India but RAB NE BANA DI JODI is the highest grossing film of the year in the overseas also.

The total gross collections for all overseas markets are $8 Million (i.e. around Rs. 40 crores), making RAB NE BANA DI JODI the highest grossing film of the year in the overseas, ahead of both GHAJINI and SINGH IS KINNG. In the UK, RAB NE BANA DI JODI has grossed close to £1.5 million till date, which makes it the biggest hit of the last 2 years in this market. In the Middle East, RAB NE BANA DI JODI has grossed a staggering $2.25 million till date, making it the highest grossing film of all-time in this region by a huge margin. The film has also achieved a fabulous box office gross of $2.1 million till date in the USA. RAB NE BANA DI JODI has also enjoyed a grand box office performance across all other overseas markets, such as Australia, Europe, Africa, and Asia, and ranks as the highest grosser of the year across these regions.

RAB NE BANA DI JODI has evoked a sensational response from audiences all over the world, which is clearly reflected in its record-breaking collections, and continues to win hearts across the globe as it goes forward from strength to strength.

Shah Rukh is the nicest superstar I’ve ever met: Bipasha Basu

If you thought that age would stop Shah Rukh Khan from sporting young ladies on his arms, then you are mistaken. The actor, who already has top B-town ladies like Kareena Kapoor fighting for his attention, is now drawing praises from dusky beauty Bipasha Basu.

The Bong babe rarely has a word of praise for her contemporaries, but is apparently all head over heels for King Khan. The sultry actress who performed a cameo with Shah Rukh Khan in ‘Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi’ says that she was much too thrilled to perform with the actor.

Speaking to a news daily about her cameo with the superstar, she said, “It was like Mumtaz-meets-Sadhana. I loved it! I got a chance to work with Shah Rukh Khan, nothing else matters. Like millions, I had seen him on screen. Then I met him for a show and I was very impressed”.

The stunner further added, “I did `Rab Ne…` in the hope of doing a full-length role with Shah Rukh and a film with Aditya Chopra. That one day of shooting with Shah Rukh was memorable. He`s the nicest superstar I`ve ever met and irresistibly charming. This was my chance to dance.”

Well, she surely danced on that chance!

SRK is one of the nicest people I have met in my life. He was supposed to leave for Los Angeles on the same day of the shoot. I did not want to use the stock photo of his for my anniversary calendar. So I asked him, and he made it a point to shoot it for me.

This is one of the quickest shoot for the calendar. It took hardly 4 minutes to get this photo. This was shot in his library. I have not used any of my lights. I noticed a chrome plated film light in his room and this is the only light in the photo.

SRK at the Golden Globe Awards

Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan spoke to NDTV at Universal city in Hollywood just as he was stepping out for the Golden Globe awards.

He spoke about the honour of being called on to present an award at the Golden Globe and of the darling of the event -- the film 'Slumdog Millionaire' -- that's based in India.

NDTV: Shah Rukh Khan, you are usually at the receiving end at such events, today you are giving away the prize, the first time for an Indian actor at the Golden Globes- Hollywood's biggest award night, second only to the Oscars. What does this mean for SRK and for Indian cinema?

Shah Rukh Khan: Now, you are making me nervous. I am not being humble, but I truly believe that the Western audience is now looking at the Indian cinema. I am one of the faces of Indian cinema at this point of time, and they picked on me and asked me to come and represent the country. It is a great honour. A lot of graciousness on the part of the Golden Globes. I am representing the country, which is a great honour. I get to present Slumdog Millionaire. It's even more heartening because A R Rehman is there, it is shot in India. I have presented Kaun Banega Crorepati. I would take it as a rehearsals for Indians to present awards here to start with and inshahallah in the future, bring some films here and at the Oscars and win some of them during my time, so I can come and attend some ceremonies and clap for our own films.

NDTV: What does this mean for SRK, the brand. After all, the Golden Globes is watched in over 160 countries the world over.

Shah Rukh Khan: I have never understood this SRK brand. Every body always asks me that. I am just an actor trying to get some emotions right. I have been working for 20 years now. These big events always make me realize how long I have been working. It's a good thing. I believe that I can represent the country. I believe in hope, happiness, goodness, smiles, entertainment, and freedom. If somewhere along my line of work, I have to represent my country then I believe my country stand for all that. And I hope, I do not let it down. I do not know about my own brand, I am not too much of a net worker or socialize. To be honest, I get embarrassed about wearing a suit and going on the Red Carpet. That is the simplicity that I have always maintained in life. I am just going to go there and do what they tell me to. Personally, I do not know what is happening to SRK brand but the brand of India I think is going to make waves in creativity and the film fraternity as the years go by.

NDTV: And your thoughts on the contenders for best film? On one hand you have the big studio products with big names like Brad Pitt as Benjamin Button, and on the other the underdogs, the small budget Indie productions featuring actors many may not have heard of.

Shah Rukh Khan: It's nice to have a mix I think, I've seen Benjamin Button, I love Brad Pitt, for an actor of his caliber to start doing the kind of stuff he's doing now, certainly so different from what you know Brad Pitt for, also the film with the Coen brothers, I think that was really good, he acted fantastically in that, it's very heartening to see stars like him, and on the other hand I think Slumdog Millionaire is a brilliant film itself, it's set in India. So I feel really closer to it, it's got Anil Kapoor, it's got AR Raman, and I think if anyone deserves an award it's AR Raman from our country, so I hope I'm not the only the first Indian on stage for Golden Globes, the second one joins me soon and wins an award inshallah. But yeah, it's always nice to have this mix, and perhaps this is the kind of stuff, which should happen for the awards in India too. You have an interesting mix of cinema and films, and you don't know which one is going to take off that night. Because it keeps you on your toes and also it keeps variety alive. So it's really nice that you have big names, like you mentioned, and you have relatively unknown people who won't be unknown, I think Dev Patel is really good in the film, Danny Boyle is not unknown, I'm a big fan of Danny Boyle, so all that put together is exciting because there's variety and you don't know who's gonna win till the last minute. Something like this should happen in the Indian awards also. The Indian awards, I feel, run on one level. They become predictable. Thought I win most of them that is the only predictability I do not want to change.

NDTV: The last few months the world has seen two images of Mumbai. One the terror attacks and the other one at the Box Office with Slumdog Millionaire. What do you think of the portrayal of your city in the film?

Shah Rukh Khan: We cannot isolate the attacks only on Mumbai there are attacks taking place all over the world. Different cities get targeted unfortunately at different times. It has happened in Delhi, Gujarat we have suffered everywhere. It is a reality we have to live with and fight. On the other hand cinema gives you hope. Films like Slumdog Millionaire, within all the grime and the dust and hardships of India and Mumbai there is a lot of hope and love. It seems like a Hindi film to me when I see Slumdog Millionaire and that is what we stand for. The country stands for that despite all the stress and hardship, problems the cash registers will flow because we are warm and loving people. If you want a comparison, Indian cinema stand for just that. Slumdog Millionaire stands for that. It leaves you with the thought that what ever happens in any part of the world it is happening all over the world and what we do not let go of is hope and happiness.

NDTV: A R Rehman has been called the Mozart of India but now he has been nominated for a Golden Globe. Is Rehman putting us on the map, finding global acceptance that was long over due?

Shah Rukh Khan: Absolutely, I think some of the Miss Worlds and Universes- Aishwarya Rai and Sushmita Sen, I am talking only in terms of the media, creative world and the modeling world. We got very far on the world map because of the presence of these two ladies and then further on lots of girls have done very well for us. I think Rehman is a true genius. He has been working hard for years and has been going some really different kind of music. I have been working with him and am very fond of him. I think that is time that some one like Rehman, if he is recogonised internationally it would be rightly so, deservingly so. If there is some one who has to get a golden globe from India for the first time then there is no one better than Rehman to get it so inshahallah. Even if he does not get I think he is the Mozart of the world not just of India.

NDTV: Shahrukh, you mentioned being nervous about going on to the Red Carpet. The last time Aishwarya Rai was on such an international stage she got a lot of flak for what she was wearing, what designer she chooses etc, is that the same with men?

Shah Rukh Khan:I am going naked, I have decided not to wear any clothes because no clothes means no criticism. I do not know what to wear. I have spoken to Karan. I have a black suit that I have been wearing for the past seven years. I take it out, get it dusted and ironed and I wear that. It is the safest. There are many wonderful people at the golden globes who are telling me that I should wear Indian clothes but my son does not like me wearing Indian clothes. So I am just going to wear a black suit and a black tie and hope I do not look like a waiter there. I hope that they will recogonise me and I pass off normally. It is the safest thing to do when you are in America and Europe.

RNBDJ: SRK's third consecutive blockbuster!

With the fourth week collections being out, it's now obvious that the Aditya Chopra directed Shah Rukh Khan, Anushka Sharma and Vinay Pathak starrer, RAB NE BANA DI JODI, has netted more than 81 crores from just its Indian run.

In the Overseas, the film has already grossed in excess of $2 million each from both UK and US. In addition to this there are good grosses from smaller markets like Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia, South Africa and the rapidly expanding Middle East.

Reputed film trade experts have estimated a staggering 50 crores (total) profit for Yash Raj Films, its world wide distributors. In fact it's the banner's biggest profit raking venture till date. And that, without even releasing in Pakistan!

As for its lead actor, Shah Rukh Khan, presently in Los Angeles for Karan Johar's MY NAME IS KHAN, this will be his third consecutive blockbuster. His last three films, Yash Raj's CHAK DE INDIA, his home banner venture, OM SHANTI OM and now once again Yash Raj's RAB NE BANA DI JODI, all have been blockbuster hits. A rare feat indeed!

I hope you are dog, Shah Rukh says to Karan

Shah Rukh Khan and Karan Johar are more like a family. Shahrukh starred in almost all his films and Karan too writes scripts keeping Shah Rukh as an actor in mind. As they have spent so many years together and have been associated with so many hits, a strong bond has formed between them.

They do not hesitate to throw tantrums on one another and whenever they shoot any film, they set the house on fire. Recently, they have been associated with another funny game. SRK, who is shooting for Karan’s upcoming project ‘My Name Is Khan’ sent a message to him saying, “I hope you are dog.” Karan received the SMS three times.

How can Karan resist such abusive words? He countered back saying that Shah Rukh had made a mistake while typing the message as the correct text should be, “I hope you are dng (doing) good.” He further clarifies blaming his cell phone, “My phone has started behaving strangely. It does the exact opposite of what I want. It types whatever it wants to type and it has been incessantly calling Aamir Khan’s number.”

Karan and Shah Rukh are best buddies and never miss an opportunity to make fun of one another. They always have fun while working.

Failures and not successes keep me going: SRK

Superstar Shah Rukh Khan has said that it is failures and not his successes that keep him going.

According to him, a genuinely happy person is someone who lives life on his or her own terms and takes responsibility for it; someone who knows how to get up and start all over again, even if he or she fails the first time around.

“I am ready to fail. I know I am not invincible,” he said.

The actor who has been chosen the role model for happiness from the media and entertainment industry by ‘Complete Wellbeing’, said in an interview to the magazine that there have been a lot of times when he has gone through a low phase.

“Today, what you see outside is the public image of my successes. If I had to weigh the good times in my life against the bad ones, the latter would clearly outweigh the former. I have had a million bad experiences. I have done a million wrong things,” SRK said.

He said the goodness in his life has completely wiped out those memories. “It’s my failures that keep me going, not my successes,” he added.

SRK said he did not feel that happiness could be measured. “It’s perhaps the most important thing in life. If you aren’t happy, you won’t even be able to enjoy your success,” he said.

He said success couldn’t be at the cost of honesty and hard work.

The actor said one can cultivate happiness by being positive, thinking positive and by being adventurous and curious.
